THE RUBENS & VIC MENSA

TEAM UP FOR NEW SINGLE
‘FALLING ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL’

Following on from a mammoth set over the weekend at Splendour In The Grass, The Rubens are back in a huge way with the release of their new single, ‘Falling Asleep At The Wheel’ – a collaboration with provocative US punk-hip-hop star, Vic Mensa.

The band surprised fans on Sunday by premiering ‘Falling Asleep At The Wheel’ live at Splendour in the Grass on the Amphitheatre stage, featuring an epic performance by Vic Mensa via LED screen! Following the set, the track had its radio debut by Zane Lowe on Beats 1!

Vic Mensa – signed to Roc Nation – has released hits such as ‘Down On My Luck’ & ‘U Mad’, and is part of the hip hop collective Savemoney, which includes frequent collaborator Chance the Rapper. The artist is also the founder of the Save Money Save Life Foundation, an initiative designed to combat American racism and injustice through various arts and education programs.

Frontman Sam Margin explains how the track came together:
“We wrote this track in LA earlier in the year and immediately fell in love with it. We wanted to make something out of the box musically and really push the song into new territory for us as a band. I’ve been a fan of Vic Mensa for a while now and think he is one of the most interesting and creative forces in hip hop right now. As luck would have it his guitarist somehow got his hands on the tune and spun it for Vic. Few days later I’m back in LA with Vic putting down his vox at his Silver Lake studio. He nailed it, and next day I was looking over the Pacific Ocean again.”
“The Rubens are fantastic — was honoured to jump on this track. Look out for the boys coming to the US with a big wave” – Vic Mensa

The Rubens SITG set was full of surprises. After dropping the brand new track, their set also featured a special guest appearance by G Flip, joining the band to sing Sarah Aaron’s part of their double platinum single ‘Never Ever’ & joining Scotty on drums for their stomper, ‘Hallelujah’.

The band have barely slowed down since 2018, which proved to be an incredible year for The Rubens – alongside releasing their third album LO LA RU, the band embarked on a mammoth headline tour across Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Europe and supported P!NK on her massive 42-date sell out arena tour of Australia and New Zealand.

2019 has seen The Rubens travel to North America for a headline tour, perform and release their MTV Unplugged Live In Melbourne album + bunker down to write and focus on new music.

All the while, in the background, the band have also been working on a passion project called Chucka Buckas – a brand that The Rubens have established to support new and emerging bands. The initiative came about after the band spoke at the NSW Parliamentary Enquiry regarding the state of live music in NSW, conveying passionately the importance of small venues and the ecosystem they exist in, and how critical this is in developing careers in music. As a reactionary measure, they decided they needed to do their bit to help grassroots music, which is when the idea for Chucka Buckas was born. Since November last year, the band have been running monthly Chucka Buckas nights at The Botany View Hotel; however this weekend marks the brand’s first regional tour, which will see The Rubens welcome two of their most loved emerging bands, Milan Ring and Shady Nasty to do 9 dates with them across New South Wales in July & August, as well as a local opening act in each region.

The release of ‘Falling Asleep At The Wheel’ marks the start of an exciting new chapter for The Rubens. Watch this space!

THE DECLINE UNLEASH BRAND NEW ENERGETIC ANTHEM “BROVINE” AND ANNOUNCE FOURTH STUDIO ALBUM

Perth-based skate punk monsters The Decline are today unveiling their brand new single “Brovine“, which comes as the third single from upcoming album ‘Flash Gordon Ramsay Street‘, due for release on Friday August 30. Pre-orders live now through Pee Records!

“Brovine” is a punk anthem for animal rights. As the name suggests, “Brovine” is written from the activist’s perspective and challenges the counter arguments that vegetarians and vegans are hit with when justifying their decisions. Guitarist and vocalist Ben Elliot explains that “this song is about maintaining your rage about animal rights after a few years of being vegetarian/vegan, and some of the ridiculous things that people will berate you with.”

The lyrics “It’s only natural” and “How else will they get their protein?” bellow through the chorus as an example of the arguments presented to those who stand for their beliefs. “Brovine” fights against discrimination in the playfully honest way that The Decline master.

Accompanying the single is the fully animated music clip, made by Mike ‘Fox’ Foxall from The Art Of Fox, that presents each member as a cartoon character parodying the act of purchasing tofu from the grocery store, leading to a police chase from a couple of meat advocates. The policemen in the pursuit use meat as a weapon, throwing steaks and sausages at their victims, almost as a metaphor for their opinions.

The upcoming album ‘Flash Gordon Ramsay Street’ is produced, recorded, edited and mixed at Underground Studios (Roger WatersKarnivoolMake Them Suffer) with Brody SimpsonMark McEwen and The Decline, and is a collection of 17 punchy tracks ranging in length between just 5 seconds and 4 minutes. This huge offering has been pulled from the weird and wacky brain space of Pat Decline (Vocals & Guitar), Ben Elliott (Vocals & Guitar), Ray Ray (Bass & Backing Vocals) and Harry (Drums).

The album takes inspiration from subjects ranging from recipe’s for vegan buffalo wings, the property market vs. smashed avocado and Zelda gaming tips all the way to philosophical Marxist understandings of false consciousness. Pat Decline pins the main album themes down to “loss, moving on and letting go, identity, mortality and friendship. There’s a lot of references to a bunch of our favourite things like The Legend of Zelda, food, the ocean, and the fun times we have had getting in a van and playing skate punk.”

Since the release of their third album ‘Resister‘ in 2015 on Australian label Pee Records, Perth based skate punk band The Decline have been touring Australian and international markets consistently, hitting the United States, The United Kingdom, Mainland Europe, Mexico and Australia annually. During these tours The Decline have shared the stage and the road with many
notable and prominent punk rock bands. Some of these include names such as; Face To Face(USA), Ignite (USA), C.J Ramone (USA), Frenzal Rhomb (AUS), A Wilhelm Scream (USA), Bodyjar (AUS), The Smith Street Band (AUS), The Bennies (AUS), Strung Out (USA), Guttermouth (USA), The Flatliners (CA) and Such Gold (USA) to name a few!

The Decline have impressed many melodic punk fans worldwide with their fast-paced and energetic style and catchy lyrical hooks, ‘Flash Gordon Ramsay Street’ will be available on Friday August 30. Pre-orders will be available at Pee Records. “Brovine” is out now on all digital platforms and streaming outlets.

NEWS: WRITTEN BY WOLVES UNLEASH BRAND NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO FOR “TELL ME WHAT YOU’RE RUNNING FROM?”

WRITTEN BY WOLVES
UNLEASH BRAND NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO FOR “TELL ME WHAT YOU’RE RUNNING FROM?”

Written By Wolves are undoubtedly one of the most exciting rock bands to burst out of New Zealand in recent years. The fresh and progressive cinematic rock five-piece have spent the past three years perfecting their sound, live show and their international fan base and have grown their Spotify streams to over 13 million worldwide. Today the band are unleashing their brand new single and video, “Tell Me What You’re Running From?”. The track is available everywhere from http://hyperurl.co/TMWYRF.

“Tell Me What You’re Running From?” gives fans a first taste of how far the band have progressed their signature genre-bending blend of Rock, Pop, Alternative and Electronic music and tackles themes of inner turmoil and staying true to oneself. Vocalist Michael Murphy explains that the track “is all about fighting your own demons and being honest with yourself about what is holding you back in life. It intertwines fear of failure and fear of success and ultimately talks about no matter what the short term gain in running away from your demons may be, it will never fix them in the long run.”

The music clip sees the band reunite with critically acclaimed LA director, Josh Mabie, who previously worked with the band on their video for “To Tell You The Truth”, which reached over 2 million YouTube views. The clip compliments the notion behind the track with a visual aspect featuring two people juxtaposed against each other, fighting and running from their double until they finally face their pursuer and conflict ceases, representing that the only way to conquer your demons is to confront them.

Written By Wolves are the highest streamed rock band from New Zealand, having amassed more than 125,000 monthly listeners, over 52,000 subscribers and 10 million views on YouTube as well as receiving three Highly Commended Awards in the prestigious International Song Writing Competition for previous singles “Not Afraid To Die”, “Genius” and “Timebombs”.

Renowned for their highly energetic live show, the band have already shared the stage with international heavyweights such as Machine Gun Kelly, Limp Bizkit, Pendulum, Sublime With Rome, Suicidal Tendencies, Hed PE, Falling In Reverse, Escape The Fate, We The Kings, Four Year Strong, Stevie Stone, Kehlani and have just finished back-to-back tours with two of New Zealand’s biggest Rock bands – Devilskin and Blindspott.

Written By Wolves have teased fans with this beastly first single, stay tuned for what’s to come. “Tell Me What You’re Running From?” is out now on all digital stores and streaming platforms at http://hyperurl.co/TMWYRF.

REVIEW: POLISH CLUB LEAVE MELBOURNE ROCKIN’

REVIEW: POLISH CLUB LEAVE MELBOURNE ROCKIN’

Sydney duo Polish Club brought their ‘Meet Me at the Iguana’ national tour to a packed 170 Russell Street on Friday June 29th. Before the band appeared on stage the crowd warmed up their vocal chords with an impromptu sing-along to Vanessa Amorosi’s ‘Absolutely Everybody’ – an unusual choice at a rock show, but it went down a treat.

Strolling on stage just after 11pm to a noisy, expectant crowd ready to rock out, Polish Club duly oblige kicking off with the blistering ‘We Don’t Care’ arguably the stand out track from their recently released sophomore album ‘Iguana’. The crowd immediately bouncing along to the kick ass rock track. A great way to start the show!

Moving straight into the funky rock title track ‘Iguana’, a song about their favourite bar in Kings Cross that they used to frequent before it closed down. Followed by ‘Goddamn’ the crowd by now hands in the air, yelling the chorus back to them loving what they were witnessing. The raw punkish ‘Beeping’ and the bluesy rock ‘Don’t Fuck Me Over’, both lifted from their 2015 self-titled EP is aired next taking the gig to another level!!

Decked out all in white, with black leather boots and black belt with a shock of spiky peroxided blond hair, David Novak’s powerful vocals are flawless and sound like a cross between the gravelly tones of Dave Grohl and the bluesy side of Johnny Diesel.

Drummer, John-Henry Palak had his drum kit positioned at the front of the stage which gave everyone a clear view of his intricate drumming, although his face was hidden behind his long blond locks as he feverishly banged away at the drums and they were joined on stage by Iguana producer, Wade Keighran on bass. The huge sound coming off the stage made it hard to believe there was only 3 of them creating the epic noise!!

There was constant light-hearted banter between the band and audience throughout the show. The respect and love between them is evident and such a pleasure to watch. They appeared to be enjoying themselves as much as the crowd. At one point Palak brings out a chocolate cake and they get the entire crowd to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to a fan named James in the crowd, before slicing it and handing it to the lucky few at the front of the stage.  Such a beautiful touch!

Novak randomly starts playing Red Hot Chilli Peppers ‘Under the Bridge’, to which Palak joins in only for Novak to forget the words of the second verse, before launching into ‘Beat Up’ from 2017’s debut album ‘Alright Already’.

Their self-depreciating, devil-may-care attitude while on stage is refreshing as it is infectious. They put everything into each song with an air of ‘something could go wrong’ at any moment, which makes it hugely entertaining to watch.

There were many highlights, with the Foo Fighters sounding monster ‘Breakapart’, hard to shake off with the crowd and band singing every word together as one. What a moment!!

They end the show with a flurry of epic tunes ‘Come Party’ followed by ‘Clarity’ and ending with the emotionally charged slow burner ‘Divided’. The crowd drenched in sweat bouncing and not wanting the night to end!

The recent prediction of the demise of rock music seems to be premature, with Polish Club showing what a kick ass rock show is all about! Seemingly flying the flag for rock music and proving it’s alive and well in Australia!!

If you get a chance to see these guys live you won’t be disappointed! One powerful rock act that will stay in your veins for days!!

Iguana out now!!

NAUTICAL MILE

UNVEIL BRAND NEW SINGLE “MARIONETTE” AHEAD OF NATIONAL LAUNCH TOUR

Perth’s pop-punk four piece, Nautical Mile, are today premiering their brand new single, “Marionette“, through Wall Of Sound and will launch the single around the country on tour in late August. The tour will begin in Perth on August 23 and will make its way through Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne! Tickets on sale now at Oztix!

“Marionette” is about a dysfunctional family unit and the experiences of some of the band members growing up in such an environment. The song is about standing up to the aggressor in these relationships which can be very difficult to escape. Vocalist Brodi Owen explains that “the particular relationship described features the aggressor attempting to mold their child into their vision of the person they want them to be with the child acting to rebel against this push. This is the inspiration for the puppetry/the marionette; the aggressor in the relationship is pulling the strings to try and force the actions of the other”.

The brand new single “Marionette” almost picks up where the last left off with Owen adding “our previous track Regicide was about a failing relationship, Marionette continues in a similar vein, however discusses a relationship within a family unit rather than between two unrelated entities.

MONTAIGNE

CHAMPIONS YOUTH OF TODAY AMIDST GLOBAL CLIMATE CRISIS
IN INSPIRATIONAL NEW MUSIC VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE,

READY

Off the back of the single reaching the coveted #1 most played song on triple j and six weeks off dropping her anticipated sophomore record, Montaigne is thrilled to release the compelling official music video for her single, Ready.  Never one to shy away from political debate, the dynamic pop songstress’ latest offering is no different. Rallying the youth of today and our future leaders and innovators, the video clip showcases Montaigne leading the pack as they prepare for the revolution amidst the global climate crisis.

Watch Ready now

Ready is undoubtedly Montaigne’s most anthemic single to date, a heartfelt call to arms, and a soundtrack for activism. There’s an undeniable element of pop to this song as Montaigne’s soaring vocals elevate the chorus, and the irresistible hook “I think I’m ready to go, I think I’m ready,” cycles like a mantra around shifting drumbeats.

Offering insight into the Ready music video, Montaigne enthuses, “The video is supposed to be a celebration and most importantly encouragement towards the school strikes for climate. Ready is dedicated to young people who are not yet jaded and worn down by the realities of this world. Those who inspire us with the fire of anger against injustice so that we may be galvanised to stand up and demand what is right from our world leaders.”

Elaborating on the slam poetry introduction and rallying the students for the video shoot, she continues, “I saw Fergus perform a slam poem he had written at the first ‘School Strike For Climate’ in Sydney. I was blown away by how eloquent the poem was, how incisive the metaphorical language was, and how confident he was in presenting this creative creation, so I got in touch with him through Instagram and asked if he’d like to contribute to the video.”

All in all, the experience was one both Montaigne and the kids will always hold dear. “I think all of us walked away from it feeling like we were a part of something massively special and spiritually permanent. My soul felt very warmed and I felt very heartened about the future.”

Speaking on the inspiration behind the writing of the Ready, Montaigne explains,“To me the song is about this political moment, where humanity is starting to realise how actually cooked this planet is, that it never had to be like this and that we have the power now to overthrow those who’ve forced us into this corner. It’s music that I’m proud of representing because I think that it reflects the feelings swirling around the current political shitfest my generation is facing, and it attempts to transform the anxiety amongst those feelings into angry power. It’s like a fuel source.”

At 23 years old, Montaigne has already dominated the charts with each single on her debut album Glorious Heights hitting #1 most played on triple j. Her single Because I Love You is certified Gold with over 8.5 million streams on Spotify and reached #25 on triple j’s Hottest 100 countdown. She won ARIA Award for Best Breakthrough Artist, was nominated for Cosmopolitan’s Fearless Woman Of The Year Award, and was commended by Sia personally following her triple j Like A Version cover of Chandelier. She has sold-out two national tours and is now set to hit the road for her national Complex album tour in November.

Complex is certainly an accurate name for the articulate popstress’ second album.  Themes range from loneliness, isolation, distorted love narratives, confused sense of self, the desire to escape, self-image issues and self-realisation. Montaigne worked with a wide range of producers on Complex, including long-time collaborator Tony Buchen (Courtney Barnett, The Preatures), Wynne Bennett(Twin Shadow, Janelle Monae), Kyle Shearer (Dua Lipa, Broods, K. Flay), Mozella (Madonna, Miley Cyrus, One Direction), Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Foals), Mario Späte (Tkay Maidza, Urthboy, Allday) and Eric J Dubowsky (Flume, St. Vincent, Dua Lipa).

Frontier Touring and Roundhouse Entertainment are excited to announce that Norwegian pop icons a-ha are returning to Australia for the first time in 34 years, before heading to New Zealand for the very first time! They’ll be joined by very special guest Rick Astley at all February & March 2020 shows, taking in Sydney, Melbourne, and Christchurch, as well as a day on the green events in Australia and New Zealand.

a-ha will be performing their seminal debut album Hunting High And Low in full to celebrate its 35th anniversary as well as other favourites from across their career.

Selling more than 11 million copies worldwide, it includes the unforgettable ‘Take On Me’, which reached #1 on the Australian charts, as well as follow-up hits ‘The Sun Always Shines On TV’‘Train Of Thought’ and the title track, ‘Hunting High And Low’.

Joining a-ha to cement this tour as a pop extravaganza is another superstar who dominated the ’80s, Mr ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’, Rick Astley. Also enjoying a major career resurgence, the British star has sold more than 40 million albums, fuelled by hits like the monster ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’‘Whenever You Need Somebody’‘Together Forever’‘When I Fall In Love’‘She Wants To Dance With Me’ and ‘Cry For Help’.  In 2007, Rick Astley became an internet phenomenon as the subject of a viral meme known as ‘Rick-rolling’, with ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ garnering millions of hits on YouTube as a result, introducing him to a whole new audience.

Still so unique decades on, the music video for a-ha’s ‘Take On Me’ won six MTV Awards, seven Billboard Music Awards, was nominated for Grammy and American Music Awards and is approaching one billion views on YouTube. The song has been covered by artists as diverse as Metallica, Madonna, Tori Amos, and most recently, Weezer, Jimmy Fallon and The Roots on The Tonight Show.

“Australia was the country we played our first ever live concerts and was our first brush with worldwide fame. It was a thrilling adventure to be there on the opposite side of the world and it’s a thrill to return in 2020 – finally we will be back where it all started!”
– Mags Furuholmen

a-ha, the Norwegian trio who dominated pop charts worldwide during the ’80s, still regularly play stadiums and festivals. Singer Morten Harket, keyboardist Mags Furuholmen and guitarist Paul Waaktaar-Savoy have sold more than 55 million albums and remain one of the UK and Europe’s most loved pop bands. Alongside ‘Take On Me’, the trio have scored global hits with the James Bond theme ‘The Living Daylights’, ‘Cry Wolf’, ‘I’ve Been Losing You’ and 2005 Max Martin collaboration ‘Analogue’. Their most recent release was a 2017 MTV Unplugged collection featuring collaborations with Echo & The Bunnymen’s Ian McCulloch and Alison Moyet. Not surprisingly, a-ha can’t wait to return to Australian shores again. As they say, “There’s not one song on that album we’re not looking forward to playing live.”

INTERVIEW: STREET PIECES “Jon would be a gigolo, if he wasn’t a musician”

INTERVIEW: STREET PIECES “Jon would be a gigolo, if he wasn’t a musician”

Street Pieces Interview

” Jon Would Be A Gigolo if he wasn’t a Musician”

Maz and Glynn sat down with Street Pieces frontman, Ben Tilney to talk about the their newest single, ‘Cthulhu’ and how they’re gearing up for a busy year.

After forming in 2013, Street Pieces released their first EP ‘The Otherside’ after working with producer Magoo (Regurgitator). After a year of cutting their teeth on the East Coast circuit, the band gained commercial airplay with Triple M and supported Wolfmother on their Australian tour. 2018 marked the release of their Everything You Ever Wanted EP and saw the band tour extensively before settling back into the studio to work on what will be their next monster release. ‘Cthulhu’ is the latest single, produced by Aria winner Govinda Doyle. With a sound as massive as its namesake, ‘Cthulhu’ delivers a sonic experience that swells and breaks with an ever-heaving groove that moves you like the ocean tide. Drawing from the eternally dark riffs of Sabbath, core shaking drums of Zeppelin and chronicled by soaring vocals. Street Pieces unleash a perennial anthem fit to roam the halls of rock!

Q. Maz & Glynn – How did you guys meet?

A. Ben – We all met at QUT doing the bachelor of music.

Q. M & G – Who makes up Street Pieces?

A. Ben – Ben Tilney on vocals, Alex Miller on guitar, Jon Mengede on bass and Marcus McLachlan on drums.

Q. M & G  – Are you from Brisbane?

A. Ben – All except Alex, who’s from Victoria.

Q. M & G – How did you come up with the band name?

A. Ben – I think I saw it etched into an alley way outside Melbourne CBD. I thought it sounded cool so I took it to the band and it  kind of stuck.

Q. M & G – What motivated you to start playing music?

A. Ben – The original lineup sans Jon started as a project at university. We all liked the idea of playing in a rock band so we started one. People said we didn’t sound too bad so that gave us confidence to keep playing after we graduated. Jon came a few years later in the piece but had always kept up with what we were doing and already had a love for rock music.

Q. M & G – How would you describe your sound to people?

A. Ben – Dynamic, we love ourselves a big chorus. Cool guitars, big vocals and a bit of rock swagger thrown in for fun.

Q. M & G – Who are your biggest influences?

A.Ben – Difficult to answer but when I think of our sound bands like Audioslave, Band of Skulls and Led Zeppelin come to mind. All things bluesy/rocky/poppy.

Q. M & G – Where do you gather song writing inspiration?

A. Ben – We can all get inspiration from anywhere, listening to music, watching movies, going for a drive or doing nothing at all and the sound just comes to you.

Q. M & G – What is your song writing process?

A. Ben – Usually we all start making sound in the studio and one of us riffs off the other and then it starts to snowball. From that point it either forms into a song structure or we all fizzle out.  I usually end up singing some gibberish over the music which I try to translate later into lyrics.

Q. M & G – Name one of your favourite albums?

A. Ben – Diamond Eyes by Deftones.

Q. M & G – Who are your favourite bands?

A. Ben – Deftones, Rival Sons, Foo Fighters, Band of Skulls, All Them Witches, Audioslave, INXS, Zeppelin, Sabbath, The Who.

Q. M & G – After 3 ep’s, when can we expect a full album?

A. Ben – We are pretty quick at writing songs but its whether they make the cut or not. We want to deliver a really killer first album. I’d say within the next 2 years.

Q. M & G – We love your new single ‘Cthulhu’. Tell us a bit about it?

A. Ben – It is our biggest song to date, inspired by HP Lovecraft and a dash of Greek mythology. We feel like the name really matches the massive ever-heaving feel of the song.

Q. M & G – What has been the highlight of ‘Street Pieces’ so far?

A. Ben – Apart from supporting heavy hitters like Wolfmother and Shihad it would have to be the upcoming tour, we’re excited to hit the road and play in new places.

Q. M & G – Where do you guys see yourself in the next few years?

A. Ben – Playing longer tours, bigger shows and hopefully in another country at some point.

Q. M & G – You guys are going on the road again, where and when can we catch you?

A. Ben – First stop is the Woolly Mammoth on July 20 with Iron Eye, Rhino and Magnus. These guys all bring it so it’s going to be a great show. Stay tuned for more dates!

Q. M & G – Last but not least, if you guys weren’t musicians, what do you think you’ll be doing?

A. Ben – Marcus would be hosting a kids television show, Alex would be a cheesemonger, Jon would be a gigolo and I would be a farmer in Japan.

Thanks for much for your time, Ben!  Keep rockin and hope to see you live soon!!

NEWS:TAPZ Releases New Single ‘LUV IS LETHAL’

TAPZ

‘LUV IS LETHAL’

Written, recorded and self-produced in New York, TAPZ brings his trademark grit and spitfire lyricism to new single ‘LUV IS LETHAL’. A thundering foot stomper of a tune with an adrenaline-boosting chorus, the track captures the feeling of being trapped within desire and fear.

“We’ve all been stuck in the middle of desire and fear at least once. I wanted to tell the story about the power of a woman’s journey causing her to rebel against love and the inevitable relationship tug of war that comes with that. When it’s all said and done, all that’s left is heartbreak, hurt and egos stripped bare. I learnt a lot through my brush with that ‘LUV IS LETHAL’ emotion. I’ve found peace in its contrast. Unless you open yourself up to new experiences and don’t shy away from pain you’ll forever be stuck in a growth-less loop. I’m still growing.”

‘LUV IS LETHAL’ by TAPZ

The New Zealand via Zimbabwe native fuses punk rock, hip hop and R&B influences to form his unique brand of noir- R&B. The rising star shot to recognition in 2016 with the collaborative release with Hermitude track  ‘The Buzz’ that topped the Australian charts, holding over 80 million plays. His debut single ‘Killa’ soon followed. The successive debut track led him to being scouted by Kanye West’s label G.O.O.D Music leading to TAPZ signing with G.O.O.D Management between 2016-18.

EVE

SHARES NEW SINGLE
‘RELOAD (FEAT. KONSHENS)’

The inimitable rapper/singer/actress/presenter Eve returns with her new banger ‘Reload’, featuring Jamaican dancehall legend Konshens. The song premiered overnight on BBC 1Xtra.

In what is her first release in six years, the pioneering and genre-defining musician returns with a track which showcases her stand-out and memorable flow across an infectious, reggae-tinged framework.  Adopting a syncopated beat, the catchy melody lets Eve’s intelligent lyricism take centre stage whilst Konshens perfectly complements the track with his vocal. A sure-fire way to re-engage her core fans whilst opening her up to the next generation, ‘Reload’ is the first of more collaborative new music to come.

Having exploded into the music scene in the late 90s, Grammy-award winner Eve was one of a fresh breed of tough, talented and commercially viable female MCs to carve their name within the male-dominated rap scene. Now nearly 20 years since the seminal Let There Be Eve… Ruff Ryders’ First Lady, Eve has accrued an impressive and undeniable hit list (‘Let Me Blow Ya Mind’‘Gangsta Lovin’’‘Who’s That Girl’, and ‘Tambourine’) which has seen her become a widely celebrated artist across the globe.

Forward-thinking, game-changing, and independently minded, Eve is every inch the icon. Having moved to London over 5 years ago, Eve has found herself and the music she is making inspired by the UK scene. With a new project due for release, expect the unexpected as Eve looks set to prove herself as an artist who defines a generation.

COMMON
TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM

LET LOVE AUGUST 30 VIA LOMA VISTA RECORDINGS

SHARES NEW SINGLE & MUSIC VIDEO, HERCULES FEAT. SWIZZ BEATZ

GRAMMY® Award-winning rapper Common will release his new album Let Love on August 30, 2019, his debut for Loma Vista Recordings.
PRE-ORDER LET LOVE HERE
In tandem with this announcement, he shared his latest single and music video entitled Hercules [feat.Swizz Beatz]. On the track, he serves up his sharp signature wordplay between soulful backing vocals from Swizz Beatz. Meanwhile, the music video directed by Carrick [Weezer] sees Common thwart a convenience store robbery caught on surveillance camera—in between rapping into his iPhone. Vince Staples makes a cameo as the cashier.
Watch the action unfold here:

Hercules follows on the heels of the recent single, HER Love featuring Daniel Caesar, special guestDwele, and an unreleased beat from J Dilla. Not only did the song amass over 1 million cumulative streams and 339K views of the Savanah Leaf-directed music video within a week, but it also received widespread critical acclaim, with VIBE calling the song “a State of the Rap Union as he addresses the rise and expansion of hip-hop throughout the past 25 years.” Rolling Stone added that it was “Common’s homage to hip-hop” and OkayPlayer professed that it’s “his most impactful body of work yet.”

About the album, he shared, “This album is inspired by the book, Let Love Have The Last Word” which gave me a path to write about things I had never written about before. It forced me to go deeper and because I opened up about so many things in the book, I was charged to go to raw, personal and spiritual places in the music. Production-wise, I knew that the music had to have depth, soul and dimension to it. I wanted the musicianship and the spirit of what live music brings but it also had to have something raw and basement about it. When my team said, “You should do some music revolving around the book.”, I just took that energy and went running into my artistry without focusing on anything else. No movies, no commercials, no parties (well, I don’t do that too much anyway) and I just worked on music. So this album is the culmination of this journey, this passion and this Divine Love that I have for one of GOD’s greatest gifts – MUSIC.”

Additionally, Common has kicked off his Let Love Tour in marquee venues in the US and Canada before touring Europe for the first time since 2014. Special guests include Nicole Bus, July 11 –July 26, and Maimouna Youssef aka Mumu Fresh, August 7 – August 29.

VIDEO: ‘Flight’ by City Calm Down

Remembers singer Jack Bourke of the track:
“‘Flight’ taps into themes I’ve explored on previous City Calm Down records – social media consumption and developing an opinion in an echo chamber – but it’s more scathing and cynical. The middle of this song was really difficult to execute. We were still working on it while we were in the final stages of mixing the new record, and starting to feel like we weren’t going to make it. But when Burke [Reid, producer] came down with a brutal bout of the flu. We all felt very bad for poor old Burke, but it did allow us an extra couple of days to finish it off.”

Sydney
Exhibitionist is multi-instrumentalist Kirsty Tickle, whose sultry electronic pop draws on delicate vocals, taut, skeletal drums and swelling synths. Also playing is Brightness, aka Alex Knight, an indie-pop producer from Lake Macquarie, NSW.

Adelaide
Paradise Club brush against the washed-out haze of dream pop’s golden age throughout the ‘80s, whilst leaving sonic hints of their youth. Blush Response, with songwriter Alister Douglas, have an ear for dreamy pop melodies and a burning desire to tear them apart.

Brisbane
Unabashed dorks Sweater Curse have captivated the local scene with their charm and evocative, jangly melodies. Opener Sycco is Sasha McLeod, whose material delivers a psych jazz sound.

Perth
Elli Schoen is a Fremantle pop artist who won Unearthed for Falls in 2018 and has supported Gang of Youths, Tash Sultana, Ben Folds, Julien Baker and Ocean Alley. Opener Flossy are a four-piece grunge pop/rock band fronted by sisters Sinead and Lauren O’Hara.

Melbourne
Catch opener Murmurmur, whose urgent soundscapes sound like a time and place you’re not aware of but desperate to find.

Formed in 2008, City Calm Down are Jack Bourke (vocals), Sam Mullaly (keys), Jeremy Sonnenberg (bass), and Lee Armstrong (drums). Television is the follow-up 2018’s Echoes In Blue and 2015’s In A Restless House.

NEWS: Bakers Eddy Release New Single & Video ‘Can’t Afford It’

BAKERS EDDY

RELEASE NEW SINGLE & VIDEO ‘CAN’T AFFORD IT’ + SIGN TO IVY LEAGUE RECORDS

Melbourne via Wellington’s favourite punks, Bakers Eddy return with new single ‘Can’t Afford It’, a cheeky punk rock anthem! To coincide with the single release, Ivy League Records is incredibly excited to welcome the band to the label family. A song that has already been uniting audiences in cathartic mass sing-along at their recent live shows, ‘Can’t Afford It’ is undeniably catchy and can barely contain the band’s ruckus, youthful energy.

VIDEO: ‘Can’t Afford It’ by Bakers Eddy

‘Can’t Afford It’ is a song about living pay check to pay check and trying to make ends meet. I wrote it in my bedroom after coming home from the supermarket, on a budget of $3.50, still managed to make a dope lentil Bolognese, ” explains front man Ciarann Babbington.

Formed in Wellington, New Zealand when they were just 13 years old, Bakers Eddy began when three high school friends decided they wanted to do something other than skating with their time. Originally comprising of lead singer Ciarann Babbington, Drummer Jamie Gordon and Bass player Ian Spagnolo, the band quickly recruited Ian’s twin Brother Alex Spagnolo on guitar. “We got sick of Alex playing PS3 in the same room while we rehearsed, so we taught him an A chord and he was in,” explains Ciarann.

Whilst still in Wellington, the band supported the likes of Gang of Youths, The Rubens and US punk band Highly Suspect. They also graduated high school and continued to hone their craft, while successfully managing to avoid going to uni or getting real jobs.

In 2017 Bakers Eddy decided to take a giant leap of faith and move to Melbourne. Once settled, they took it upon themselves to write 50 songs in 50 days. The songs themes ranged from being broke, drinking too much, failing at love and technological dependencies, essentially, as Ciarann deduces, “being 21 in a new city”.

They enlisted the help of fellow Kiwi, producer Tom Larkin (Shihad) and independently released their debut EP I’m Not Making Good Decisions in April 2018. The band rode out that year playing shows up and down Australia’s East Coast as well as a short European tour, stopping in Germany and the UK for The Great Escape Festival.

In late 2018 the band released the single, ‘Leave It To Me’ which was added to high rotation on triple j and community radio stations and saw them championed by triple j Unearthed, taking out the platform’s coveted Falls Festival 2019 comp in Victoria.

Bakers Eddy kicked off 2019 by signing to Ivy League Records/Music and writing and recording a bunch of new material. Australia’s newest adopted sons are always ready to party with their infectious, fast-paced tunes in tow! They are here to stay and aren’t we a better place for it!

WOLF ALICE

ANNOUNCE INTIMATE FESTIVAL
WARM-UP SHOWS THIS MONTH!

Frontier Touring are chuffed to announce Wolf Alice are performing two very special and intimate pre-Splendour in the Grass & Spin Off Festival warm up shows in Melbourne andSydney this month.

After winning the coveted Hyundai Mercury Music Prize for the second time, performing at countless European festivals and dates throughout America, and supporting Liam Gallagher, Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters, Sydney and Melbourne audiences are in for a treat when this well-honed touring band return.

Tickets to these special close-up and intimate warm-up shows will go on sale to the general public from 12 noon AEST on Thursday 11 July.

The band’s second album Visions of a Life, recorded in Los Angeles, took things to new heights on stellar tracks like the slow-burning ‘Don’t Delete The Kisses’, and ‘Beautifully Unconventional’ with its beast of a groove. Fittingly describing the album but also apt for the band’s power onstage, Rolling Stone asserted ‘The stakes are high, and the payoffs are real.’

They’ve found something of another home down under, smashing Falls Festival in 2014, Splendour in the Grass the following year – including a pair of rip-roaring Sydney and Melbourne sideshows – and 2018’s Laneway. Most recently, the band returned last September for two sold out shows at Melbourne’s Corner Hotel alongside shows in  Auckland, Brisbane and Sydney.

Joining Wolf Alice in Melbourne is ‘Candy’. Recently releasing ‘Under The Weather’, the album received universal acclaim with triple j play, a feature album on FBI and other community radio support. Candy’s live show is dynamic and visceral – taking the intensity of the post-punk bands of the 80’s and adapting it for a modern audience. Candy engages his audience with his inimitable presence and emphatic delivery all the while allowing a meld of melodic guitars and synths to wash over them.In Sydney it will be Green Buzzard, warming things up,  marking his return last month with new single ‘I Don’t Want To Be Alone’. Produced by Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Weezer) at his rambling LA studio, the single marks a new chapter for the Sydney based project of singer and guitarist Paddy Harrowsmith. ‘I Don’t Want To Be Alone’ is the first single in two years for the Australian artist and follows previous releases including Space Man Rodeo, his debut album from 2017, featuring singles ‘Do You Ever Glow’ and ‘Never Let Me Go’, and his debut EP from 2016 Easy Queezy Squeezyfeaturing ‘(I Don’t Wanna) Break Your Heart’. Green Buzzard’s Wolf Alice support will be his first live show since 2017 and a chance for fans to hear the new music he’s been tinkering away at behind the scenes.

Don’t miss this rare chance to catch Wolf Alice performing in such intimate venues. Act quickly to secure your spot front and centre.

DANISH RISING ARTIST THERESA REX RELEASES SECOND SINGLE, ‘LIKE I LOVE YOU’

DANISH RISING ARTIST THERESA REX RELEASES SECOND SINGLE, ‘LIKE I LOVE YOU’

DANISH RISING ARTIST THERESA REX RELEASES
SECOND SINGLE, ‘LIKE I LOVE YOU’

With a vocal recognisable for most people, though currently a rather unknown name to many, Danish rising star Theresa Rex releases her second single ‘Like I Love You’, following up on the successful collaboration with the UK hitmaker, Jonas Blue.

BUY/STREAM: THERESA REX – LIKE I LOVE YOU

Few new artists with only 3 tracks can claim more than 600+ million streams, worldwide chart rankings and several gold and platinum certifications. But Theresa Rex can. Her highly charismatic and expressive vocal has within a short time attracted collaborations with international DJ-producers, and positioned her as an interesting and promising artist, worth keeping an eye on.

Theresa Rex’s second single in her own name, ‘Like I Love You’, is a charming and warm pop song about taking the time to appreciate your love, even when it’s not a new one. Supported by an extremely catchy production with a hint of a natural acoustic sound, Theresa captures these feelings in an emphatic and charming manor.

The story about Theresa Rex is in no way traditional. One day while jamming gypsy-jazz at the local town square, she got scouted and asked to do the vocals for Martin Jensen’s single, ‘Solo Dance’. The song turned out to be a massive hit reaching charts and several hundred million of streams all over the world. Curious about exploring her own musical ability as a pop artist, Theresa started pursing her own commercial sound, resulting in the release of the debut single, ‘Wild Ones’. Lately her collaboration with Jonas Blue made Theresa’s voice and name reach the charts once again.

Like I Love You’ is out now on Central Station Records.
