MAGDALENA BAY’S SOPHOMORE ALBUM IMAGINAL DISK OUT AUGUST 23 VIA MOM + POP MUSIC

Magdalena Bay

MAGDALENA BAY’S

SOPHOMORE ALBUM

IMAGINAL DISK

OUT AUGUST 23

Imaginal Disk, the sophomore album from acclaimed duo Magdalena Bay, is slated for release on August 23 via Mom+Pop Music—pre-save/pre-order it HERE. Additionally, a new song, “Image,” debuts today alongside a video directed by Amanda Kramer—listen HERE and watch HERE.

Close your eyes,” the band says. “Imagine a brand new, better you. Now wait 22 minutes. Now open your eyes. Meet your brand new image! Isn’t it amazing that the meat in our heads can do this?”

Following the “Death & Romance” video, which found True—played by the band’s Mica Tenenbaum—getting an “imaginal disk” upgrade inserted into her forehead, the “Image” video goes back in time to the waiting room where True stood by for her first fitting. Although disk infomercials playing on the televisions initially get True excited, she’s thrown for a loop when the upgraded consciousness she signed up for is different than what she expected.

“Image” follows the initial album offering, “Death & Romance,” which Vulture praised as “kaleidoscopic,” while PAPER commended the duo for another “glassy, sprawling prog-pop odyssey that builds from a tightly wound jam into something seemingly designed to hit the back walls of stadiums.”

Aside from last year’s EP, mini mix vol. 3, Imaginal Disk marks Magdalena’s Bay first full-length project since the release of their critically acclaimed debut album, Mercurial World, in 2021. Vulture praised the album as “one of 2021’s best pop statements,” while Pitchfork celebrated the duo’s “magic power” of sounding “like whatever you grew up with, whenever that was,” and PopMatters commended the album for “providing a blueprint for a new generation of electronic pop.”

Magdalena Bay is the Los Angeles by way of Miami duo consisting of Mica Tenenbaum (vocals, producer, songwriter) and Matthew Lewin (producer, songwriter). The two first met at an after-school music program in Miami where they grew up, bonding over shared musical influences and eventually starting a prog rock band Tabula Rasa. That band broke up, but when Tenenbaum and Lewin crossed paths again in college, they reconnected with the goal of making something closer to pop music that blends retro and futuristic elements under the moniker Magdalena Bay. They released a series of EPs leading up to their critically acclaimed debut album Mercurial World in 2021 and went on to sell out their first headlining tour, play numerous festivals around the world— including Coachella in 2023, tour with Charli XCX, Caroline Polachek, Flume and collaborate with Lil Yachty, JIHYO, Blu DeTiger and more.

GLOAM EXPLORE DISCONNECTION AND DISTRACTION ON DREAMY NEW TUNE “DIVING HEAVY”

Gloam

GLOAM EXPLORE

DISCONNECTION AND

DISTRACTION ON DREAMY

NEW TUNE

“DIVING HEAVY”

Perth/Boorloo post-shoegaze outfit Gloam offer up dreamy new single Diving Heavy, taking an introspective look at disconnection and distraction.

Written as a journal entry of sorts, Diving Heavy explores social withdrawal and a disconnection from self. “Facing mental and emotional struggle, it can be easy to lose ourselves in escapism and avoidance, sinking into the numbness of distraction,” explains the band.

“Often it’s only when we are on the other side of the trough that we are able to look back and take stock, move on and work on ourselves. Diving Heavy investigates what it’s like to look back on these periods of emotional dissonance, only to find a fog and shadow of feeling, requiring you to sift through and try make sense of where you’ve ended up, and how best to move forward.”

Mixed and mastered by long time collaborator Cameron Murphy at Opaque Studios, the single follows on from their May release Hinder, showcasing the band’s unique blend of ethereal soundscapes and relatable lyrical theming. Hinder delved into the intricate dynamics of clinging onto discomfort out of fear, reflecting a struggle with self assurance that ultimately, and aptly, hinders the ability to voice ones truth openly and move towards personal growth and empowerment.

Hinder made waves across the globe, collecting plays on triple j programs, rotation on community radio stations and a spin BBC Radio 1 Rock Show. The track received editorial love online and on Spotify editorial playlisting on All New Rock.

Forming in early 2022, Gloam are a four-piece that have already carved a name for themselves in their corner of the world. Rowan Hardy takes on vocal duties and guitar while Oli Booth joins as lead guitarist, George Blacklock on drums and Oakie Digginson bass. Drawing inspiration from iconic shoegaze acts to the likes of Deftones, Diiv, Deafheaven, Nothing, Slowdive, and Whirr, Gloam take listeners on an immersive, genre-defying journey. Their swirling shoegaze style has proven to appeal to a diverse range of fans, resonating with followers of alternative, indie, hardcore, and metal music.

The quartet’s debut single Merchant released in July of 2022 and saw quick success with an add to Spotify editorial playlist Adrenalin, tens of thousands of digital streams and counting. The single was pulled from their warmly received self-titled EP released later that year, offering a tantalising introduction to the foundations of Gloam’s dreamy creativity.

Despite their brief tenure on the live circuit, Gloam has already made a significant impact, sharing the stage with international acts Deafheaven (USA), Movements (USA), Boston Manor (UK), Touché Amoré (USA) and Hubris (CH) as well as a collection of Perth alternative favourites including Daybreak, Idle Eyes, No Brainer, Pinwheel, Shangrilaand Vacant Home.

THE RUBENS ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM SODA + TOURING NATIONALLY SEPT/OCT

The Rubens Tour

THE RUBENS ANNOUNCE

NEW ALBUM SODA +

TOURING NATIONALLY

SEPT/OCT

The Rubens have announced the release of their highly anticipated new studio album SODA – out Friday 20 September. Three years after their triumphant ARIA #1 album 0202, the Sydney five piece have crafted their most evolved record to date.  Defining and refining their sound while remaining increasingly experimental, they push musical boundaries without losing what makes them special.

To celebrate, the band today share the album’s title track ‘Soda’ – an ominous earworm and one of the best – and most unusual – Rubens songs to date.

“We really love this song sonically. We feel like it encapsulates the record, so it makes the most sense to name the album after it. It’s a breakup song where the fault is all on you, and you’re trying to come to terms with the fact you’re a f**k up basically.

“It didn’t originally have the autotune on there, Konstantin (Kersting) wanted to do a crazy version with the vocals and once he sent it back, we were all like ‘Yeah, that’s it’. We never pictured autotune on there, but it makes it sound slightly disturbing. It brings out the emotion a bit more.” – The Rubens

With a brooding atmosphere and haunting manipulated melodies, ‘Soda’ tells the tale of a relationship gone stale, “flat soda’s all we’ve got now” vocalist Sam Margin croons over dark yet playful production. When the spark is gone and there’s no one else to blame, The Rubens poignantly explore the aftermath of lost love and placed blame, “Sandcastles in the rain / its the same as what we got / and what i can promise you”. ‘Soda’ is a compelling and introspective offering that proves The Rubens’ are not done pushing the boundaries of their sound.

‘Soda’ follows recent singles ‘Black Balloon’, ‘Liquid Gold’, ‘Good Mood’ and ‘Pets and Drugs‘, which collectively saw adds to triple j, Triple M and the Hit Network, with the latter reaching the most played track on triple j over the summer. Their impressive string of singles have seen adds to rock, pop and indie tastemaker playlists across Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music.

The Rubens have four Top 3 ARIA Albums to their name. They also took out the #1 spot of triple j’s Hottest 100 with ‘Hoops’ (5 x Platinum) and have 9x Platinum and Gold singles, with hits including ‘Live In Life’ (4 x platinum), ‘Never Ever (feat. Sarah)’ (3 x platinum), ‘God Forgot’ (Platinum) and Masterpiece (Platinum). In addition, they have sold over 20,000 tickets nationally across 28 shows this year.

To mark the release of the band’s fifth LP, The Rubens are embarking on an 8-date national headline tour in September / October that will see them play Tasmania, Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

Within the inviting world of SODA, you’ll find love songs to drug dealers. Guitars that sound like synths. Vocals that sound like robots. Pop songs that are subversive but still seductive.
It is perfect timing that right now, with more eyes and ears fixed on them than ever, The Rubens are dropping their most creative album to date with the refreshing SODA.

LOTTE GALLAGHER ANNOUNCES DEBUT EP A BETTER FEELING + PROTECTS HER PEACE ON ‘THIS ROOM’

Lotte Gallagher

LOTTE GALLAGHER

ANNOUNCES DEBUT EP

A BETTER FEELING +

PROTECTS HER PEACE ON

‘THIS ROOM’

Rising Naarm singer-songwriter Lotte Gallagher has piqued ears with the first tastes of her musical project over recent months; distilling the uniquely-teenage experience of love, yearning and heartbreak on singles ‘Adam’ and ‘Gray’.

Following up her triple j Unearthed High 2023 finalist title, first ever Laneway set, national tours with The Beaches and Ricky Montgomery (and still only 17 and in her final year of high school), today Lotte Gallagher announces her debut EP A Better Feeling is out Friday 4 October, and shares explosive new cut ‘This Room’.

A Better Feeling is a confident and addictive collection of songs, combining the effortless cool of modern indie stars such as Phoebe Bridgers and Angie McMahon with the nostalgic energy of the 90s rock Lotte was raised on – Portishead, Jeff Buckley and Nirvana. The EP’s earworm melodies are driven by propulsive, shimmering guitars, Lotte’s commanding vocals and her striking yet heartfelt lyricism. The EP was produced by Holy Holy’s Oscar Dawson and features co-writes from both Dawson and Ali Barter.

Written during a time period spanning Lotte’s early teenage years to the present, these songs represent an artistic and personal journey for a songwriter who’s still experiencing the highs and lows of young adulthood in real time.

The EP takes its name from a refrain in today’s soaring new single ‘This Room’: “Let me be, when I start leaving, I just need, a better feeling.” On the track, Lotte brings us further into her atmosphere; it’s another fierce and punchy anthem where her clever lyricism and striking vocals sit resplendent amidst a bed of indie guitar, all building to a euphoric, shout-it-out-loud crescendo.

“‘This Room’ is about when the truth comes out. When you are tired of someone’s behaviour and instead of causing a scene, you leave because you know that you deserve a better feeling.”
– Lotte Gallagher

An artistic soul with an air of blasé vengeance, Lotte Gallagher is a force to be reckoned with. A high school student from inner Melbourne, Lotte has immersed herself in art and music classes, fuelling the creativity in her instrumentation and striking mature lyricism. With her too-cool-but-I-care-too-much attitude, Lotte Gallagher is a phenomenal artist with the drive to become a true star of her generation.

HEARTLINE ANNOUNCE NEW EP ‘PINK LEMONADE’ AND SHARE TITLE TRACK

Heartline

HEARTLINE ANNOUNCE

NEW EP ‘PINK LEMONADE’

AND SHARE TITLE TRACK

Adelaide alternative metal quartet Heartline announce upcoming EP, ‘Pink Lemonade’,out Friday August 16 and share genre-bending title track. Watch the video here!

The fresh new single is the second to be pulled from the upcoming EP after Loversdropped in May ahead of Australian tours with Banks Arcade and Windwaker respectively. The single Pink Lemonade is ultimately about the realisation that opportunity follows hard work and dedication. “It’s about throwing all sense of entitlement to the wind and realising that it doesn’t matter what we feel we deserve, it’s down to us to work hard and make it happen,” explains vocalist Luke Taylor.

“I was so inspired after our first tour, I just wanted more and more of it and I came to the realisation that offers aren’t just going to get thrown our way – we can’t just sit and wait for things to fall in our lap. If you want something bad enough, you have to go out and make it happen.”

Production from Sam Trott (Rogue Half) with a mix and master by Nick Sjogren (Thornhill), Pink Lemonade is a digital fusion of pop and metal, weaving in and out of expansive EDM soundscapes and soaring chorus’ before unleashing a wave of grinding guitar and bass, showcasing Heartline’s musicality as a unit. The quartet’s latest two releases see the band explore new creative ground, to be heard across their forthcoming ‘Pink Lemonade’ EP.

Heartline is Luke Taylor, Nevenko Sarunic, George Carey and Michael Cooper. Since their debut in 2019, Heartline have continuously shown themselves as an exciting and promising act to watch in the Australian alternative music scene. Popular releases Delorean and the two-track drop ‘Somewhere Else [I]’ established a sound that seamlessly combined hard-hitting and complex grooves with soaring melodies and irresistible dance elements, with Delorean landing the band a coveted cover spot on Spotify’s Homegrown & Heavy playlist.

Pairing their fresh sound with a relentless, energetic and captivating live performance, the four-piece have earned a place performing alongside artists to the likes of The Word Alive(US), Holding Absence (UK), Crossfaith (JPN), Paledusk (JPN), Thornhill, Windwaker and more and secured a tour with Dance Gavin Dance (US) late 2023, winning over thousands across Australia.

With their following rapidly growing, Heartline level up with each new release. Pink Lemonade is available and streaming everywhere now. The EP ‘Pink Lemonade’ will be out Friday August 16.

SUNBLEACHED SHARE

NEW SINGLE “WHITE LACE”

+ ANNOUNCE EP ‘I CRAWLED

INTO THE HOLE’

Brisbane alt-rock band Sunbleached share new single White Lace, and announce upcoming EP, ‘I Crawled Into The Hole’ out Friday August 30. The news arrives fresh off the back of the announcement they’ll showcase at this year’s BIGSOUND Festival, and will main support UK alt rockers Boston Manor at three shows in August.

Produced and recorded with long time collaborator Dylan Cottee, the leading single White Lace is written from the perspective of vocalist Josh Baker, who prior to being against the idea, gave in to tradition and married his sweetheart. The song explores how belief and opinions can change depending on circumstance.

“I got married earlier this year, which is not something my wife and I had ever considered to be in our futures, we’ve historically been very anti tradition and anti marriage,” tells Baker. “The first verse of the song describes coming to terms with giving into tradition and wanting to get married after being so anti marriage for so many years. I feel like people can be so high and mighty with some of the beliefs we carry.”

The band release White Lace just after announcing their place on the BIGSOUND 2024 lineup with acts including Stand Atlantic, Sly Withers, Dear Seattle, Belle Haven and more. In addition to this, Sunbleached will join Boston Manor in August, main supporting a small run of shows in Newcastle, Canberra and Geelong. Tickets on sale now via Live Nation.

White Lace follows on from earlier singles Hell is Repetition and No Cure For Life, which garnered radio support from multiple triple j programs, Eleven on Double J, Unearthed and community radio stations across the nation as well as editorial playlisting on Spotify and Apple Music. Both singles are a nostalgic exploration of the band’s sound thus far, building on elements established on the quartet’s 2023 sophomore EP release, ‘Delicate Places We Hide’.

Sunbleached’s dedication and passion for their project has seen them welcomed to the Destroy All Lines agency roster and recently pick up new management from 27 Music(Teenage Joans, Bec Stevens, The Tullamarines).

Sinbleached

Sunbleached ‘White Lace’ out now | Official single artwork above

Sunbleached is Josh Baker (vocals), Bradley Maddaford (guitar), Zane Hughes (bass) and Brent Ottley (guitar). With all members winding down from previous music projects, sunbleached set out in 2020 to create a fresh and authentic alternative rock project ripping inspiration from decades past, reimagined for the present.

The quartet have made an impression over the years playing shows with the likes of Holding Absence (UK), Void of Vision, Deadlights, Mirrors, Pridelands, Dregg, Waxflower and more, as well as New Bloom Festival in March with Citizen, Movements and Touché Amoré to name a few.

Dark-pop solo powerhouse ALTERJOY shares introspective new single Radiate, exploring the process of overcoming mental struggles, reconnecting and seeking the light on the other side.

Radiate was created with long term collaborator and producer Chris Lalic (Windwaker), and highlights the wild, intense journey of battling internal pain and using that struggle as a form of artistic expression. Ultimately, the song portrays a message of resilience and transformation through confronting and overcoming personal challenges.

The new single follows on from ALTERJOY’s April single, World So Loud, which followed a similar reflective theme critiquing societal norms and behaviours, diving into the destructive cycle of hypocrisy and exploitation. The official music video was premiered in Sydney at Clipped TV’s Inner West Film Festival.

ALTERJOY is the brainchild of singer songwriter Ben Heidrich, predominantly known for his role as drummer in Adelaide alternative metal outfit, The Daily Chase. Relocating to the Gold Coast last year, Heidrich ignites his creativity in the form of ALTERJOY, a project free from genre restraint and restriction. Experimenting with elements of EDM, metal, dark pop and hip hop, inspired by artists to the likes of Enter Shikari, BILMURI and Ghostmane, ALTERJOY borrows from a broad range of genres, setting out on a unique path of self discovery and sonic exploration.

Launching in 2023, This is Real became ALTERJOY’s debut single, a rock anthem built upon a cinematic landscape, paving the foundations of alternative pop rock mixed with EDM elements. A blend of dark synths and vibrant keys sought to strike listeners in the feels from the first drop. This years sophomore single Hella Good is a fierce and confident cover of a No Doubt favourite. The single reached tens of thousands of streams across YouTube and Spotify and further established ALTERJOY as a newcomer worth watching.

ALTERJOY is a musical odyssey for those craving something refreshingly unique and thought-provoking. Heidrich’s refusal to be confined by convention has led his solo project into uncharted territory, creating a thrilling and unpredictable listening experience.

BAD NEIGHBOUR ANNOUNCE ‘MILLIONS’ ALBUM + SHARE NEW SINGLE “HEART PUMPS BLOOD”

BAD NEIGHBOUR ANNOUNCE

‘MILLIONS’ ALBUM + SHARE

NEW SINGLE

“HEART PUMPS BLOOD”

Brisbane alternative indie rock outfit Bad Neighbour have announced their debut album‘Millions’ will be released Friday September 20. The band share new single Heart Pumps Blood today as a taste of more to come!

Bringing together an expansive pallet of sounds whilst continuing to deliver their rejuvenated take on nostalgic punk rock, new single Heart Pumps Blood is about recognising that even with an abundance of love and empathy in your life, this won’t fix all your problems. Heart Pumps Blood joins May’s And The Fleas and February’s In The Car as the third track to be released off the long-awaited debut album, ‘Millions’. Each single has showcased rough-around-the-edges punk, embellished with a distinctly emo flair and is a testament to the bands evolution as artists and their ability to craft songs that resonate on a personal level.

Having been in the process of creation for three years, forthcoming album ‘Millions’ takes a reflective look at love, loss and connection: “there were people in our lives during the writing process of Millions that we knew wouldn’t be in our lives forever,” says the band.“It’s almost as if we wrote about some of those losses before they happened.”

Weaving through moments of raw unrelenting energy with heartfelt, honest and emotive lyricism, ‘Millions’ wears its heart on its sleeve and showcases a sound well beyond Bad Neighbour’s years. “We’re incredibly excited to share this release with the world, writing this record was very cathartic for us and to have something palpable we can share with people is very special to us.”

Previous single And The Fleas was celebrated live at a packed out hometown headliner presented by Destroy All Lines earlier this month, and the band have just been announced as main support for Californian rockers Badflower this August. Limited tickets available via Destroy All Lines.

Launching in 2019 with their debut single Odd Socks, Bad Neighbour came together off the back of shared musical interests and combined motivation to tread their own sonic ground inspired by the likes of PUP, Modern Baseball and The Menzingers. Lead by Cooper Riley (lead vocals/rhythm guitar) and joined by Zoe Middleton (lead guitar/vocals), Liam Sumner (bass/vocals) and Jack Parkes (drums), Bad Neighbour are well on their way to becoming “frontrunners in Australia’s ever-evolving indie punk crowd”, as coined by Wall Of Sound.

The last 12 months have seen Bad Neighbour find their footing and solidify themselves as ‘ones to watch’ as they joined the Destroy All Lines roster. The quartet landed support shows with Mom Jeans (US) and Microwave (US) last March, toured across the country main supporting Spanish Love Songs (US) last August, just wrapped a tour with Hot Mulligan (US) and Free Throw (US) this March and took to the big stage at New Bloom Festival in Brisbane earlier this year.

IJALE CREATES DYSTOPIAN LOVE STORY ‘THIS BUBBLE’

DYSTOPIAN LOVE STORY

‘THIS BUBBLE’

Navigating the harsh realities of the world without rose-tinted sunglasses can be testing – even for multi-disciplinary musician and creative tastemaker IJALE, who, with his latest offering ‘This Bubble’, explores the precious space for escape that is naturally carved out by romantic intimacy.

“This Bubble is a dystopian Love story; a meditation on the tender moments of a relationship, new or old, that make the noise and stress of the world around you fall away.”– IJALE

Following on from ‘SO BE IT’ and ‘Seaside’ in fastidious step, ‘This Bubble’, (which like all his output is produced, mixed, and mastered by IJALE) is another successful exercise in melding afro-centric sonic motifs with production that is notoriously Avant-guard. The result is a growing body of work placing IJALE at the helm of an important emerging scene in Australia right now.

Pulling from his Nigerian heritage, IJALE offers a unique experiential perspective to be heralded and observed; while as a presenter at triple J Unearthed, he has a proven flair for identifying and amplifying Neo-Soul, genre-bending R&B, and indie music. In addition to his creative output, IJALE is a championing force who is instrumental in giving back to his community.

Cementing himself in Melbourne’s thriving music scene with a nomination for ‘Best Solo Artist’ at the 2022 Music Victoria Awards, IJALE has been invited to showcase at SXSW Sydney, and supported Winston Surfshirt, Kojey Radical, Kota The Friend, Tkay Maidza, and Yazmin Lacey.

IJALE draws inspiration from the likes of Genesis Owusu, Kojey Radical, Bakar, and Cruel Santino; a rich pool of influence he applies his fresh and unique perspective to. The result is a sound that is both cutting-edge, personal, and culturally relevant. It’s a tall feat, but one IJALE is fit to master.

CONFIDENCE MAN ANNOUNCE FORTHCOMING STUDIO ALBUM 3AM (LA LA LA) OUT FRI 18 OCT

Confidence Man

CONFIDENCE MAN

ANNOUNCE FORTHCOMING

STUDIO ALBUM 3AM

(LA LA LA) OUT FRI 18 OCT

Australian powerhouse party starters Confidence Man are back and celebrating their big move to London the only way they know how: flying over the city in a helicopter, naked. The visual for lead single ‘I CAN’T LOSE YOU’ – a sugary shot of euphoria from their third studio release 3AM (LA LA LA) – sees the pop-dance delinquents setting out their stall from a great height: they want to whisk you away from the dull wasteland of modern mediocrity, pump up the volume and, with their typical unseriousness, crash-land on the dancefloor. This is album three, Confidence Man 3.0, locked and loaded, and they’re building a rave new world, where the outfits are daringly small, the hairstyles outrageously large, and it’s always, always night.

“It’s a fucked up sort of world,” says Sugar Bones of the new Confidence Man universe they’ve created. But most importantly: “It’s 3am, it’s never not 3am, and we party all the time.”

Since they high-kicked into view with their 2018 breakthrough album, Confidence Man have won hearts and lost minds around the world with their arch pop-dance confections and cute choreo – but, like, in a hot way. On 3AM (LA LA LA), Janet Planet, her floppy-haired foil Sugar Bones and instrumentalists Clarence McGuffie and Reggie Goodchild are delving deeper into UK rave sounds of the 90s and 2000s, from trippy acid techno and trance to breakbeat and big beat. It’s darker, sexier and more surreal.

Following the huge acclaim of their last album, 2022’s TILT, Confidence Man’s next club-focused chapter began with the release of 2023’s ‘On & On (Again)’, co-produced with Daniel Avery. They’ve since released underground hits with DJ Seinfeld (‘Now U Do’) and DJ Boring (‘Forever 2 (Crush Mix)’), as well as a remix album (Confidence Man Club Classics Vol 1.). At first, the band “wanted to dehumanise pop music and make it over the top and ridiculous again,” says Planet. But now they’re bringing those pop sensibilities to classic UK rave. “We wanted to revisit those sounds and then add pop hooks and vocals to them. I feel like that hasn’t really been done before, besides The Prodigy. We wanted to revisit those sounds and then add pop hooks and vocals to them. I feel like that hasn’t really been done before, besides The Prodigy.”

3AM (LA LA LA) references what you might call the flow state Confidence Man found when writing and recording the album at Pony Studios in east London, with sessions that would go on all night. Vocals were improvised in the moment, and often captured in the first take. “We pretty much wrote every single song when we were wrecked,” says Planet. “We’d get blasted and stay up till 9am coming up with music, but we noticed that 3am was the hottest time for when we were on it and the best ideas were coming out.”

Keen detectives may also notice the album’s reference to the song ‘3am Eternal’ by their heroes, the British acid house group The KLF (the very same KLF who once pulled off one of the most talked-about stunts in UK music history: burning a million quid). That admiration works both ways: The KLF’s elusive Jimmy Cauty has become a Confidence Man fan and has worked on a remix of the album’s closing title track. “I don’t think he’d been to a gig in 25 years and he came to see us at the Roundhouse in London,” says Planet. “He’s been mentoring us a bit ever since.”

While Confidence Man aren’t planning to set fire to any hard-earned cash anytime soon, their new album is definitely full of unexpected twists. A seamless, high-energy mix, 3AM (LA LA LA) blends together an even more varied grab-bag of genres from the 90s and 2000s, masterminded by producer Goodchild. It makes sense that Confidence Man drew on the likes of Groove Armada, Prodigy, Leftfield and Underworld, says Bones, because “all those classic UK rave acts have always been popular in Australia. Prodigy were my fave band growing up when I was in my early teens.” And yet their take on it all is, in typical Confidence Man style, filtered through their own warped lens. “We didn’t know any of the rules,” says Bones. “These sounds make their way into your scene but then everyone repurposes them because no one understands the context,” continues Planet. “No one had ever been to a warehouse rave where we’re from.”

Confidence Man have quickly attracted a hardcore fanbase of ravers, young and old, through their jaw-dropping, high-octane performance at Glastonbury 2022. They’ll be back at Glasto again this summer testing a new live show they’re putting the finishing touches to, stepping up to the Other Stage as well as hosting their club night, Active Scenes later on in the night. For the first time, they’re building an ambitious set – helmed by Rob Sinclair, lighting and production designer for none other than Madonna.
