XMPLA RELEASES VIBRANT NEW SINGLE ‘BIG KIDS FEAT. CALMELL’, AHEAD OF DEBUT EP

XMPLA, the moniker of up and coming Sydney producer Aaron James, has teamed up with vocalist Calmell for the release of his most impressive single to date, ‘Big Kids’. A follow up to his electric single ‘Excited’, and another step closer to the release of his debut EP on October Records, due later this year.

The new single, sees XMPLA explore and diversify his sound once again. Previously impressing audiences with dynamic productions shaped by a huge range of vocal techniques, and refined by each subsequent release, he has gone on to collaborate with various artists around the world, and now enlisting the help of Sydney vocalist Calmell, with XMPLA gushing on their working relationship, “we were both on a similar wavelengths with how we approached the song, and we pretty much made ‘Big Kids’ within the first hour of getting in the studio.”

Further describing the meaning behind the lyrics, XMPLA shares “‘Big Kids’ plays on how we never really sleep because there is always something going through our minds. Some of us never really grow up and there is that kid inside all of us that as we get older, tend to suppress but it’s about discovering that and not just letting adult life make you feel like you can’t be yourself or have fun!”

XMPLA first burst onto the scene with extraordinary prowess in 2017, taking home first place at  Studio 301’s ‘Is It A Banger’ competition. Having now released a small handful of extremely technical works, XMPLA’s ingenuity has captured the attention of the industry, quickly becoming afeature artist for triple j Unearthed, and blooming into a unique and talented trailblazer in his field. Amongst his accolades, he has also produced first class remixes for Odd Mob, Animal Feelings and most notably an official remix for Marshmello’s hit single ‘Wolves’ – the original sitting well over 1 billion streams across platforms. With various local shows to be announced in the coming weeks, make sure to keep an eye on this brilliant newcomer, who’s guaranteed to be making serious waves in the near future!

‘Big Kids feat. Calmell’ is out now on October Records.

True Crime Duo SKYND Release ‘Tyler Hadley’ Video. ‘Chapter II’

True Crime Duo SKYND Release ‘Tyler Hadley’ Video. ‘Chapter II’

TRUE CRIME DUO SKYND RELEASE
TYLER HADLEY VIDEO

CHAPTER II EP OUT NOW

Industrial-tinged duo SKYND is the dark creative outlet and the alter ego of its lead singer, Skynd, and producer and multi-instrumentalist Father. The pair explores the darkest and most disturbing parts of the human psyche and furthers their delightfully creepy aesthetic. They siphon inspiration from inexplicable and brutal criminal cases, and the mystery surrounding unsolved deaths, and transforms them into songs. Who needs Investigation Discovery when you have SKYND?

The duo recently dropped the Chapter II EP.

BUY/LISTEN CHAPTER II HERE

Jim Jones, the first song and video from Chapter II, dropped earlier this year. Watch it here. The EP also features the songs Katherine Knight and Tyler Hadley.

Watch the Tyler Hadley video here:

“On Katherine Knight, we were searching for a theme,” SKYND reveals about the song influenced by the notorious Australian woman who skinned her victim. “And I thought, ‘Why don’t we just write a fucked up love song?’ She was a psychopath and unable to feel true empathy and true love and that’s why I wanted to write a love song about her. If you have love and hate, and you put them together, they cancel each other out. Hate + Love = NOTHING, so you can’t feel anything, and that is what I am saying in the lyrics.”

She continues, “I just wanted to come up with a fucked up love story and she was in my head for a very long time. And I had her story in my diary since I was 14. I knew about her for a very long time. She was one of the reasons that I went to Australia — because I wanted to have an interview with her. But that was just impossible. She never really talked about the whole crime, she never told anyone what was her trigger, why she did what she did. Of course she didn’t want to be alone but she really never gave a reason why.”

Regarding Tyler Hadley, which follows the story of a boy who killed both of his parents because he wanted to throw a party at his house, SKYND says, “He developed the idea to kill his parents so he didn’t have to ask for permission anymore. He ended up having a party in the house that dead bodies were in, so it’s really creepy.”

Father weighs in on these new visuals, saying, “We don’t create — we document. We don’t see ourselves as artists, but as craftsmen and we are getting better and better at it. Chapter II is the current state of our abilities.”

Last year, SKYND arrived on the scene with a debut EP featuring three songs and videos that nodded to infamous serial killers. Chapter 1 included Elisa Lam, Gary Heidnik, which features a cameo from Korn frontman and true crime aesthete Jonathan Davis, and Richard Ramirez.

ABOUT SKYND:
We all conceal something behind the earthly façade we show to the world. Maybe, it’s an unspoken fetish. Perhaps it’s a covetous urge. Or it could just be the kind of darkness we acknowledge in passing—but don’t dare reference out loud. SKYND peel back those layers and uncover what lurks beneath in all of its painful glory. The industrialized gothic electronic duo—Skynd [lead vocals] and “Father” [producer, multi-instrumentalist]—exorcize beauty by bloodletting as they mine some of history’s most baffling, bizarre, and brutal crimes on their debut trio of interconnected independent singles.

With the release of Chapter 1 in 2018, and over 3 million hits on Youtube, SKYND are back. The duo represents the next level of aural immersion, intermingling sound, visuals, and a warning worth heeding.“All human beings are capable of cruelty,” Skynd says. “We have to keep the inner animal in check. We’re here to provide a different perspective on the psyche to maybe answer some questions.”

VERMONT
RELEASE BRAND NEW SINGLE “RUIN” + ANNOUNCE DEBUT SELF-TITLED EP

Melbourne’s four-piece alternative rock/emo outfit Vermont are blasting back on the scene with their first release of the year, “Ruin”, which takes notions of expectation and self-dissatisfaction and converts these ideals into a fiery rock track. “Ruin” comes paired with a music video and the announcement of the boys self-titled debut EP, due for release Friday September 20!

This brand new single is produced, engineered, mixed & mastered by Christopher Vernon (Belle Haven, Deadlights, Better Half) and is an infectious pop rock tune that features a melodic backbone, distorted guitar tones and a catchy chorus complete with angsty vocals to boot. “Ruin” addresses self reflection and as front man Joshua Swanwick explains, “highlights an inability to be satisfied with who you are. Whether that is from the expectations of others or expectations of your own.”

The music video that accompanies sees the band play through their brand new single in a room filled with a smokey atmosphere, strobe lighting and neat camera work by Martin Wood Imagery(DREGG, The Gloom In The Corner, Weighbridge). The film features slow camera spins and glitchy film effects that give the clip an edge and uses close ups to show the weight of the emotion behind the lyrics.

Depth Magazine placed Vermont in their Saturday Spotlight late last year and commented on the way the band is able to evoke emotion and create music at a standard typically higher than most this early on in their musical career by saying: “With only three songs currently released, Vermont have the sound of a band well beyond their years … Touching on themes of relationships, heartbreak, pain, and inner demons, Vermont are able to create an overwhelming aura of emotion through their sound. Dark guitar and bass tones consistently combine with melancholy vocals in their songs to instill a constant feeling of inner aching.”

Vermont will release their debut EP September 20, which will add four brand new tracks to the bands repertoire and will build on the thoughts and themes of the previous three singles. The Vermont EP encapsulates feelings of anxiety, toxic relationships, self doubt and the environments that mold us. Joshua explains that the EP “focuses heavily on how so many different things form together to make us who we are. It’s not always pretty and at times it feels like its all too much.”

Vermont formed in late 2017 and is comprised of Joshua Swanwick (vocals), Jono Hnatejko (guitar), Nathan Borg (bass) and Curtly Lyon (drums). The quartet once made up three of five members of a pop-punk group that grew out of the music they were creating, only to come together down the track and rebrand as the band we see today. In the early stages of their musical journey, the band has only played a handful of shows around Melbourne, but have made sure to leave a mark on the stages they have graced, having played alongside Reside, Stuck Out and The Playbook most notably. Vermont strive to produce music that they love and aim to further develop and enhance their sound as they progress and explore new territories.

“Ruin” is out now and available on all digital and streaming platforms! Vermont EP will be released Friday September 20.

MELBOURNE ELECTRONIC DUO
NADISKO
ANNOUNCE NEW SINGLE + LYRIC VIDEO
TAKE ME AWAY

Electronic masters Nadisko have today announced their iridescent new single Take Me Away, a track made to be spun in the summer (or to heat up the winter months!) out August 9.  The group, consisting of Alex Hopkins and Blake Wood, have also released a stunning lyric video to accompany Take Me Away.

Nadisko formed during the Myspace glory days of mid-2008; an era when MGMT’s debut album was being blasted all over the radio and ultimate-cringe head-to-toe flouro attire was widespread.  They quickly cemented themselves as premier resident DJs in Sydney, and from there they gained airplay on BBC Radio One for their debut EP, they supported Steve AokiTigaUffie and heaps more massive names, remixed Peking Duk’s first EP, and played shows all across Australia, Europe and Mexico.  It’s been a wild ride, and the guys are super excited to be back with their new single Take Me Away, as Wood enthuses,“After a four year hiatus, we have developed a more mature sound, using the knowledge that one gains after 50 releases and a love of dance music.  We are super keen to release new music and share it with everyone!”

Evocative of electronic dance auteurs RÜFÜS DU SOL and Crooked ColoursTake Me Away is the much-needed antidote to a chilly Australian winter.  Hypnotic percussion percolates underneath wistful, beautiful vocals, and it’s a masterclass in electronic dance production and arrangement.  Offering a little insight into the inspiration behind the track, Hopkins says, Take Me Away is an intimate, summery, poolside tune with a hypnotic guitar riff and dreamy soulful vocals.  It is a new direction of what we are vibing musically, and in that, something we have only recently tapped into.  It was inspired by equality and relationships.  With the world being so busy and with so much division, we often struggle and forget to spend time with those closest to us.  It was inspired by a very tough time for us in our lives and was used as a form of escapism.  It comes back to the idea of a ‘perfect’ dream or idealism of what relationships should be like.  It brought us back to the things that are important to us in life.”

Nadisko are a part of the Hot Sunday Records label family, run by Australian DJ and producer Color Castle (Christian Pilot), joining the roster alongside Sidney CharlesMiguel CampbellDennis Quin and more.  Hand in hand with their label, Nadisko are ready to celebrate their return with Take Me Away. Wood describes how the pair’s relationship has developed over the years and how honing and interchanging their skills has resulted in Take Me Away, saying, We both work in media and have a penchant for everything television and movies.  We first met socially and uncovered a joint passion for music.  Alex had been making music since he was 12, from this, I took care of the live element and Alex was mostly production, with these roles changing often over the years.  Between this and music, I guess you could say we have a very proactive work ethic after years of relying on each other through various hurdles!”

Nadisko is Alex Hopkins and Blake Wood.

Take Me Away is set for release on August 9, 2019

MYLK ANNOUNCE NEW SINGLE + VIDEO

NOT MY FAULT

+ MELBOURNE LAUNCH SHOW ON AUGUST 23

Lovable indie rockers Mylk have today announced the release of their fun new single Not My Fault, a hooky track about being a bit of a bad luck magnet, set for release on August 8.  The group have also released a fittingly entertaining and super endearing clip for Not My Fault; it’s a one-shot-wonder bursting with youth and personality.  And they’ll be celebrating the release with an exclusive hometown show at the Grace Darling Hotel in Melbourne on August 23.

Not My Fault is the perfect example of what Mylk is – a bit cheeky, undeniably catchy, with idiosyncratic vocals and colloquial charm.  Not My Fault is an uncomplicated yet extremely effective track, kind of effocative of jangle legend Mac Demarco but still with a unique Mylk spin.  Thrilled to be releasing the track, Nathaniel Peacock, lead vocalist of Mylk says, “It feels great to be releasing this track after working so hard on it for such a long time.  We love the song, and to finally be able to show it to the world is exciting and relieving, hopefully it gets stuck in people’s heads!”  Not My Fault was inspired by a simple melody, and the song was completely written without any lyrics at first.  “It was while jamming the song instrumentally that we just happened to sing the words ‘it’s not my fault’ to the tune of the chorus and the rest of the lyrics just came together.  The lyrical content of the song is not meant to be taken super seriously at all, with the track aiming to be fun and catchy, and something to make people move.”

The clip for Not My Fault is just as eccentric as the band themselves, as the viewer is taken on a spectacularly quirky ride through a classic sharehouse environment with a surreal twist.  Working alongside Jack Wilson-Lee of JWL Productions, there’s puppies, hairdryers in the bathtub, backyard amateur theatre, and more, and it’s all tied together with a wonderfully apathetic performance from Mylk.  It’s tongue-in-cheek, but it has a lot of heart, and it does a great job of convincing the viewer that Mylk would be a pretty fun group of friends to have.  Explaining the inspiration behind the clip, Peacock says, “The video is a bunch of small sketches where different events occur that are seemingly ‘Not My Fault’, this idea of doing multiple lighthearted sketches was our idea from the beginning of planning the video, as well as creating the effect that the video was filmed all in one take.  We wanted the video to emphasise the lyrics in the song, as they do tell somewhat of a story.”

Mylk are celebrating Not My Fault with a show at Melbourne’s own Grace Darling Hotel on August 23.  Giving fans a taste of what to expect on the night, Peacock enthuses, “We really take pride in our live performances, and I think we can all say that playing gigs is our favourite part of being in a band and making music.  Mylk gigs tend to be a great time, at least for us, with a fun and safe environment for all encouraged.  We make sure that our recorded music is exactly the same as our live performances in terms of sound, and that the shows give everyone a memorable experience and an excuse to shake yo booty.”

Mylk is Nathaniel Peacock (lead vocals, guitar), Harry Bohmer (lead guitar), Julian Addati (bass guitar), and Ewen Stewart (percussion, backup vocals).

Not My Fault  is out August 8.

NEWS:RITUALS OF MINE ANNOUNCE NEW EP SLEEPER HOLD

NEWS:RITUALS OF MINE ANNOUNCE NEW EP SLEEPER HOLD

ELECTRONIC & ALT-R&B DUO RITUALS OF MINE ANNOUNCE NEW EP SLEEPER HOLD OUT OCTOBER 4

Rituals of Mine, the electronic recording project of Los Angeles-based songwriterTerra Lopez and percussionist Adam Pierce, announce their new EP, SLEEPER HOLD, out October 4 via Carpark Records.

The video for lead single, BURST, which premiered this week via Billboard Pride, was directed by Kris Esfandiari (King Woman) and was created by a majority queer, women, and trans crew. Over nightmarish, staccato instrumentation, BURST reconciles with childhood and past traumas. The concept of the video stems directly from Lopez’s tendency to use basketball as a coping mechanism when she was younger and represents herself overcoming the obstacles of being a queer woman of colour in the industry.

“With this new material, I’m confronting a lot of personal issues I haven’t addressed before,” says Lopez. “I made a promise to myself that I’m no longer going to play small or hide behind metaphors, that I’m going to really lean into self-confidence, self-reliance and take up space. ‘BURST’ is the beginning of that.”

WATCH THE VIDEO FOR LEAD SINGLE BURST

SLEEPER HOLD follows their minimalist debut, Devoted, and is as tense and captivating as its name suggests. Lopez began writing the songs that would eventually inhabit the EP during one of the most harrowing and self-reflective times in her life. “In 2016 my father committed suicide, and six months later my best friend died in an accident,” recalls Lopez. “Both of those losses were incredibly devastating, and it was massive for me because these two people who were such important figures in my life were gone. These new songs all derived from the past three and a half years of my life and what those losses made me confront.”

Lopez flew from California to Florida to work with her long-time collaborator and producer Wes Jones and began developing a brooding sound that would match the emotional intensity of her writing. Having the intimate space of a studio, occupied by only her and a producer, meant that Lopez could write from the heart in a way that didn’t feel possible when there were more people in the room. Over the course of a few months the two would craft some of the project’s most cavernous and vulnerable songs to date. “This new material is very direct and focused on what I want to express with things I’ve held in for so long.” says Lopez. “It’s finally me addressing all of that trauma because I finally had the space to do so.”

NEWS: Northlane Release New Video ‘Eclipse’ From Their Highly Anticipated New Album ‘Alien’

NORTHLANE
RELEASE NEW VIDEO, ECLIPSE
FROM THEIR HIGHLY ANTICIPATED NEW ALBUM, ALIEN OUT FRIDAY

ALIEN RELEASE SHOW DETAILS REVEALED

Northlane’s highly anticipated fifth studio album, Alien, is released this Friday via UNFD and to add to the excitement, the band have released a brand-new video for Eclipse as a Youtube premiere.

Eclipse is an attempt to understand the reasons and motivations behind the things my father did. When everything else in his life went wrong, he took it out on my sister and I. It’s easy to say that he was just a bad father but it was a bit more complicated than that. Despite trying to see it through his eyes, I’ve promised myself that I will never turn out like him, as a father, a husband or a man.” explains vocalist, Marcus Bridge

Eclipse is the follow up to the Bloodline video, also directed by Jason Eshraghian.

Marcus Bridge adds “I had a very clear vision for the Eclipse video and Jason absolutely nailed it. To mirror the theme of the lyrics, I wanted the viewer to literally see the world through my father’s eyes. You see all the awful stuff we went through as children but also what led him to do those things. Like the Bloodline video, this will make some people uncomfortable but unfortunately this is a reality for a lot of people.”

Watch the video for Eclipse here:

The band are also thrilled to reveal a free intimate release show at Yah Yah’s in Melbourne on Friday, August 2 to celebrate the release of Alien. The event will also feature a pop-up store and attendance will be at a first come, first serve basis. Be sure to get there early to avoid disappointment.

THE EVENT FEATURES A NORTHLANE POP UP STORE

For a band that have traditionally focused on wider issues in the outside world, Alien is easily the most personal statement of their career. “I was raised in hell but I made it out,” says Northlane vocalist Marcus Bridge. “Raised in a place I shouldn’t have been, and no child should have been. But I’ve been able to break free.”

While some long-time listeners might assume that the title Alien is a continuation of the space and futuristic themes that have characterised previous Northlane albums, it’s instead a reflection of the alienation Bridge felt as a child “who grew up in a weird, unusual household and who was bullied at school because of it”.

Produced by the band themselves, the album was recorded at Chris Blancato’s studio in Sydney, whereNorthlane recorded their first EP, 2010’s Hollow Existence. Bridge did his vocals at Sydney’s Electric Sun Studios, where the quintet made their 2011 debut album, Discoveries.

For a band marking their 10th anniversary in 2019, Alien is a bold leap forward; the work of a group fighting their way out of their corner by moving forward rather than looking back. Their previous three albums may have debuted in the Top 5 in Australia – with Node landing at Number One before going on to win an ARIA Award for Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album, an accolade also awarded to Mesmer – but Northlane are in no mood to play it safe.

Alien pre-orders are available now.
Alien is available as Exclusive Vinyl, CD and Merchandise options
in limited quantities worldwide via unfdstore.com.

In support ofAlien, Northlane will be heading to North America for a headline run throughout August and September with Erra, Currents and Crystal Lake. October will see them tour Australia and New Zealand before their European Headline tour in November and December supported by PolarisSilent Planet andVoid of Vision.

NEWS: ABOVE, BELOW UNVEIL BRAND NEW SINGLE “LABYRINTH” AND ANNOUNCE DEBUT ALBUM

ABOVE, BELOW

DROP BEASTLY NEW SINGLE “LABYRINTH” AND ANNOUNCE LONG AWAITED DEBUT ALBUM ‘THE LOTUS CHAPTERS’

Sydney’s Above, Below have created pure gold with their first single of the year, “Labyrinth”, which comes as the second cut from an upcoming debut album, ‘The Lotus Chapters’, which has been in the works for over three years and will finally see the light of day on Friday September 27, with pre-orders available now at https://abvblw.bigcartel.com

“Labyrinth” opens with an ominous introduction that leads to a short acoustic guitar segment featuring atmospheric vocals that welcome the heavy backbone and intricate guitar work that weaves its way throughout the track. Vocalist Jacob Wilkes balances brutal heavies with soaring clean vocals that are almost reminiscent of Panic At The Disco’s Brendon Urie to round out this musical masterpiece, providing something for everyone.

This brand new track touches on the thoughtful theme of life and navigating the tumultuous and exciting adventure that it is. “Labyrinth” takes the simple notion of a child climbing the tree and uses this as a metaphor for life where the child represents innocence and excitement and the tree serves as the journey and path of life itself. Guitarist Zac Adamson explains the process in saying that “when we set out to write this song we wanted to take a simple metaphor and use it to describe a much larger and grandiose concept and when we stumbled upon this idea, it just made perfect sense to us.”

“We all have things that we loved doing as a child and climbing anything I could find was something I used to take so much joy in. We figured that this was also a perfect metaphor for going through life; the ups, the downs, trying to find the right branches and making your way to the top no matter what.”

The music video is beautifully shot and edited by Connor Rancan featuring all members of the band, Jacob Wilkes (Vocals), Zac Adamson (Guitar/Vocals), Nicholas Bird (Guitar), Dylan Mallia (Bass) and Isaac Ross (Drums) playing through their creation set against natures backdrop which compliments the theme of the album.

‘The Lotus Chapters’ is a massive debut full length that has been in the works for a while. The album is a 12-track concept album that encompasses the ideas of growth, life and death, recorded, mixed and mastered by Nicholas Page at STL Studios (Tapestry, The Beautiful Monument, In Hearts Wake). A seamlessly composed concept album, the body of work weaves through the various stages of life guided by the extended metaphor of a lotus flower beginning as a seed, flourishing and eventually blooming. Throughout the 12 tracks the ideas of growth, learning, maturity, darkness, light, harmony and acceptance are navigated and contemplated to form an overarching image of what it means to be human and what it is to exist. Without constraint, the album blends ambient clean atmosphere, heavy progressive metalcore and thematic story-telling to unearth a meditation on our place and purpose in this world.

Above, Below quietly started as a small bedroom project between close friends in 2015 with the immediate mindset of setting themselves apart, with a constant focus on innovation and contrast within their progressive metalcore roots. In early January 2017 the band released their debut EP ‘The Sowers of Discord’, which incorporated a multifaceted blend of heavy grooves, heavenly clean sections and crushing breakdowns. Premiering at triple j’s Short.Fast.Loud at the time, the single ‘Paradise’ received national radio play in the following week and garnered adds to official Spotifyplaylists such as Got Djent and Deathcore, where the band has held a place since 2017, driving their monthly listeners into the tens of thousands.

Since mid 2017 up until now the band has been grinding away, touring through most of Australia. Their energetic and blistering live show has led to Above, Below sharing the stage with the likes of Chelsea Grin, Born of Osiris, Deez Nuts, Polaris, Resist the Thought, Void of Vision and Thornhill, among plenty more.

Above, Below’s debut album ‘The Lotus Chapters’ will be released Friday September 27 with pre-orders live now at https://abvblw.bigcartel.com. “Labyrinth” is out now to stream and purchase at all good online outlets and streaming platforms here
