SAMPA THE GREAT WINS

BEST INDEPENDENT

RELEASE, BEST FEMALE

ARTIST AND BEST HIP HOP

RELEASE AT ARIA

AWARDS 2020 FOR

DEBUT LP, THE RETURN

Last night from the 2020 ARIA Awards, Sampa The Great took home three awards, Best Independent Release, Best Female Artist and Best Hip Hop Release for her 2019 debut album, The Return, culminating in a thrilling live performance from Botswana.

Filmed at dusk from a stone rooftop, Sampa The Great is joined by her live band and team of enigmatic dancers for a raw and stunningly choreographed performance of “Final Form”, the debut single from The Return LP. Zambian-born, Botswana-raised and now Melbourne-based, Sampa opened the performance with a powerful spoken word set to the introductory bars of album track “Freedom”, as the rapper and poet addressed notions of equality and representation within ARIA itself and the wider music industry. Not to be missed, replay the live performance here.

Sampa The Great was nominated for 6 x ARIA Awards including Best Video, Best Australian Live Act, Album Of The Year, Best Female Artist, Best Hip Hop Release and Best Independent Release for her 2019 album, The Return.

“This award means a lot to me, because Hip Hop has been redefined in the past five, ten years in Australia. Young black artists, young people of colour, keep doing what you’re doing, keep bringing the stories to the forefront, because now we get to see a side of Australia that was never shown.” Sampa stated upon accepting her second title for Best Hip Hop Release. “I’m sending all my love to Black women who are in Hip Hop. It often feels isolated and masculine. You can step into whatever genre, and be you. You can define genres.”

Taking out her final award of the night for Best Female Artist, Sampa said, “As someone who is wholeheartedly supported by some amazing women, it’s an honour to receive this award. I’ve done my best to represent who I am and who I’m growing to be, and show the beauty of where I’m from. Women deserve to be applauded, of different shapes, sizes and race, and I am honoured to be able to be applauded as well.”

In 2019, Sampa took home Best Hip Hop Release for “Final Form” at the 2019 ARIA Awards, alongside multiple other wins at the annual J Awards, including Video of the Year and Double J’s Artist of the Year, Best Hip Hop Act at the Music Victoria Music Awards and broke industry records by winning the prestigious Australian Music Prize twice in her career. The Return LP was made triple j packet Feature Album, Feature Album at Double J, FBi, Triple R, PBS, SYN, Radio Adelaide, RTR and 2SER, and received praise from the likes of The Guardian, NPR, Pitchfork, The FADER, Billboard, OkayAfrica, Michelle Obama and countless others. “Final Form” has since gathered over 11 million streams to date.

Last night’s 2020 ARIA Awards arrive after a momentous year for Sampa, which includes becoming the first solo artist and female musician to win Best Live Act at the National Live Music Awards and becoming the first-ever global BET Amplified Artist. Alongside a remix of The Return track, “Time’s Up” with new verses from New York rapper Junglepussy, Sampa appeared on The Avalanches’ recently released single “Take Care In Your Dreaming” alongside Denzel Curry & Tricky, as well as Baker Boy& Dallas Woods on “Better Days”. Entertaining audiences across the globe by playing festivals like Glastonbury, Splendour in the Grass and Laneway, Sampa has performed virtually for AFROPUNK, Black August and the Roots Picnic and consistently keeps in the company of greatness, supporting the likes of Kendrick Lamar and Ms Lauryn Hill.

COSMO’S MIDNIGHT AND BTS JOIN FORCES FOR ”FLY TO MY ROOM” OUT NOW ON BTS’ ALBUM BE

COSMO’S MIDNIGHT

AND BTS JOIN FORCES

FOR ”FLY TO MY ROOM

OUT NOW ON BTS’

ALBUM BE

Sydney’s prolific sibling act, Cosmo’s Midnight and South Korean pop supergroup BTS have come together for new collaborative track “Fly To My Room”, out via Big Hit Entertainment and taken from BTS’ latest full-length record and #1 iTunes album, BE.

The idyllic cross-continent pop team-up fuses all the finest assets from each party, with Cosmo’s Midnight providing their production and songwriting mastery to the slinky pop track. Twangs of 70’s keys lead a steady percussive beat, juxtaposed with the K-Pop group’s explosive blend of raps, blissed-out harmonies and chorus hooks. Instantly irresistible, the prolific Australian duo’s signature acumen breathes through the track, calling on their newly carved out sonic identity and proving their chameleon-like expertise in all corners of music, no matter the style or scale.

Unveiled on Friday, November 20, “Fly To My Room” has already surged to #14 in the Spotify 200 charts and #4 on the US iTunes charts. Cosmo’s Midnight say of the track: “It was a dream come true to write a song with BTS! We’ve always been fans of their music but when they reached out for us to collaborate we were completely blown away.”

“Fly To My Room” arrives one week after Cosmo’s Midnight shared their supernatural video and HONNE remix for “A Million Times”, taken from their sophomore album, Yesteryear out now via Sony Music (Australia), RCA Records (USA) & Black Butter Records (UK). The track also follows the duo’s announcement that they will reopen live music at the Sydney Opera House on December 10 with two scheduled shows. Tickets are on sale now to the celebratory moment, which marks the duo’s only hometown live performances for the remainder for 2020, and will see the live debut of their brand new four-piece show.

Cosmo’s Midnight have upheld a career-spanning reputation as one of Australia’s most beloved left-of-centre acts, from their bedrooms many years ago to studios and live stages across the world, and now over 260 million global streams across their discography. In the live arena during 2019 alone, the duo ignited the stages of Splendour in the Grass, Listen Out and St Jerome’s Laneway Festival, as well as sold-out, headline shows in the US, Asia and major Australian venues on a national tour. During an equally sensational 2020, the Yesteryear LP has confirmed the evolution of Cosmo’s Midnight, whose showcase of growth and self-reflection across the 12-tracks won them triple j Feature Album upon release and already sits at 72 million global streams to date. Drawing influence from the sounds they grew up with, the album presents a landmark moment for the multi-instrumentalist, songwriting and production act who have spent years honing their sonic identity.

BTS below

Seven-member South-Korean supergroup BTS have seen a colossal rise to global fame since their formation in 2010, now having four US number-one albums to their name, and a multi billion-streamed discography of hits including “Boy With Luv” feat. Halsey, “ON” and lead track from today’s new album, “Dynamite”.

As the duo’s pop acumen exponentially increases, listen to today’s newest world-dominating collaboration with global act BTS in “Fly To My Room”, and secure a ticket to see Cosmo’s Midnight make their live Yesteryear LP debut at the Sydney Opera House in December.

KEEZZ ANNOUNCES NEW SINGLE, “THE NIGHT” OUT NOW

KEEZZ ANNOUNCES

NEW SINGLE, “THE NIGHT”

OUT NOW

Keezz is thrilled to announce the release of his latest single ‘The Night’ out now.

Keezz (pronounced as Keys) first came about in 2017 when acts like The Weekend, Allday, Juice WRLD and Frank Ocean inspired him to create his own music. Hailing from Melbourne, Keezzs’ music is a mixture of pop, hip-hop and R&B with meaningful and insightful lyrics. With dark and upbeat tracks Keezz likes to change it up and experiment with his sound alternating between rapping and singing

‘The Night’ is out now Official single artwork below

About ‘The Night’
This track comes from a new phase for Keezz, a new era of pop, hip-hop and R&B tunes. Keezz uses synths, smooth keys, hard drums and full harmonising vocals to create this piece.
The track is loosely based on Keezz’s life, him wanting to draw the attention of a vibrant girl in a night club, but the problem is that they are complete strangers. Keezz is shy and reserved making it difficult for him to approach her directly, so he settles for catching glimpses of her that night as he wishes he would have the courage to say hello. Perhaps one day even having the opportunity to give her his love, his respect and everything he has.

INTRODUCING FRENCH ARTIST LAURE BRIARD; NEW EP ‘EU VOO’ OUT FEB 19, 2021

INTRODUCING FRENCH ARTIST LAURE BRIARD; NEW EP ‘EU VOO’ OUT FEB 19, 2021

INTRODUCING FRENCH

ARTIST LAURE BRIARD;

NEW EP ‘EU VOO’ OUT

FEB 19, 2021

Seignosse-based French artist Laure Briard has shared a mesmerising video for new single ‘Eu Voo’, alongside news of a freshly inked deal with Dinosaur City Records, announced this morning via The Industry Observer.

Recorded in collaboration with acclaimed Brazilian psych-rock band Boogarins, ‘Eu Voo’ serves as the title track from Laure’s new EP of the same name, released 19 February, 2021 via Dinosaur City Records (Australia/New Zealand), Michel Records (North America) and Midnight Special Records (Rest of World). Listen to ‘Eu Voo’ here and watch the video here.

‘Eu Voo’ is accompanied by a music video filmed in Spain, written and directed by Laure Briard frequent collaborator, Norma.

Of the video, Norma shares: “Laure has been my friend for years, and she has always inspired me in images, settings. I imagined her as an outlandish heroine in an American indie movie, tender and offbeat. I created a clip of my dreams, and I made for her bird wings, to by far away from heartaches and pains of the soul, above the towns, overhead canyons, towards the blue horizon. We left the earthy Landes for the surreal landscape of the Bardenas desert, in Spain, where we found our American fantasy. We shot these images in a few hours, as the sun was going down. But as I was closing up the equipment, I felt the desert sand rise – I lifted my head and there before me, Laure was flying. I opened a warm San Miguel and watched her make circles around the twilight.”

Watch ‘Eu Too’ below

Laure Briard is a modern day Françoise Hardy drawing influences from pop, garage rock, bossa nova and psychedelic yé-yé. Laure has released 3 x albums, 2 x EPs and a handful of well-received singles, and has been compared to the likes of Margo Guyan and Vashti Bunyan.

Eu Voo was composed at home several months after Laure’s first trip to Brazil in 2017 under the influence of Tramadol, suffering from the pain of a pneumopathy. The song came to life at the prestigious studio Dissenso in São Paulo this January, reuniting the Latin Grammy Award-nominated Boogarins, one of the most-watched psych bands of the moment, and long-time partners Octopus (Vincent Guyot) and Marius Dufot.

Laure recounts: “‘Eu Voo’ is a song about crossing the ocean to find one’s beloved. During the new recording session in January, I absolutely wanted to do the song while changing the initial arrangements: accelerate the tempo and make it more punchy, catchy. Boogarins in the chorus sing with me, “estou a travessaro oceano,”/ “I cross the sea!””.

Eu Voo’ [EP] will be released digitally and on vinyl on February 19, 2021 via Dinosaur City Records(Australia/New Zealand), Michel Records (North America) and Midnight Special Records (Rest of World).

BIG DOG RELEASE FOLLOW UP SINGLE “I USED TO FEEL IT ALL THE TIME” OUT NOW

BIG DOG RELEASE

FOLLOW UP SINGLE

“I USED TO FEEL IT

ALL THE TIME”

OUT NOW

Emerging from the diverse Newcastle and Sydney scenes, country-shoegaze collective Big Dog chart those dreamy recesses of the psyche to which their NBN Newcastle television namesake stood as gatekeeper for a generation of 90s kids—all bathed in the warm glow of friendship and the pure pleasure of performance. A feeling Big Dog has harnessed in new single ‘I Used To Feel It All The Time’.

Hot off the back of debut single ‘Fight it Now’, ‘I Used To Feel It All The Time’ showcases Mark’s baritone and mantra-like vocal phrasing, while the entrancing rhythm section of Simon and Shane grounds a mesmeric potion, leading inevitably to a desperate, climactic wall of vocals and effects. ‘I Used To Feel It All The Time’ is an engrossing study in the ambivalence and anguish that comes of change, be it personal or external.

Framed by the electrically charged high drama of a sunset thunderstorm sweeping in from the horizon, ‘I Used To Feel It All The Time’ charts the experience of revisiting a once-familiar hometown—reflecting eloquently on the dissonance that comes of driving past strange new shopfronts and so many unfamiliar faces, and confronting the inevitability of time’s relentless onward march in a way similarly explored by TV Colours, The Ocean Party, Sunscreen and Flowertruck.

Comprising Shane Byrnes on lead guitar, vocals, and bass; Sam Kluge (ex-The Mothers Club) on rhythm guitar and bass; Mark Whittaker (Hopes, Central West) on lead guitar, bass, and vocals; Netta Mae on vocals, acoustic guitar, synths, and bassoon, and drummer Simon Metcalfe, Big Dog is a testament to the unquantifiable alchemy that results from a group of friends embarking upon a shared a creative revelry.

Big Dog draws inspiration from a host of stellar sources, from Tom Morello to Paul Kelly: Shane’s love of Townes Van Zandt and the raw immediacy of blues greats including Freddy King finding a ready home alongside Sam’s admiration for dark country iconoclast Orville Peck and triple-guitar peers Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, and Mark’s love of Mazzy Star and shoegaze legends from My Bloody Valentine to Slowdive—while Netta draws from the same oft-shadowy wellspring as singer-songwriters from Neko Case to Sarah Shook to Phoebe Bridgers.

Listen to ‘I Used To Feel It All The Time’ below

A deeply sympathetic marriage of pedal-and-gear experimentation, the obsessive search for new tones and sounds, and earthy playing and songwriting thrills at the heart of Big Dog’s incomparable sound.

Big Dog is a true meeting of minds—encompassing a formidable lineup of three guitarists, three songwriters, and three lead vocalists. More than the sum of its parts, Big Dog is a band of ineffably Australian resonance and authenticity, right down to a shared commitment to natural, unvarnished vocal delivery. Big Dog’s songs range freely from the heaving swell of the East Coast to the scorched Australian interior.

‘YOUR HEART HAS TO GO’

A BUOYANT SLICE OF

UPLIFTING POP

Following the release of his reflective single “Love To Give”, Australian singer-songwriter Tony Sergi is back with “Your Heart Has To Go” – a buoyant slice of uplifting pop.

A voice matured well beyond his years, Tony Sergi’s music is overflowing with youth and elegance. Whereas “Love To Give” was melancholic and emotional, “Your Heart Has To Go” “is pretty much a happy break up song, a middle finger to all the past lovers that screwed you around. An anthem for all those who have been fucked over”, Tony explains.

Full of pounding pop rhythms and Tony’s impassioned vocals, the track is a celebration of independence – finding happiness and comfort within himself.

Growing up in Sydney’s Western suburbs to Italian/Australian parents, Tony has already racked up more than 300 shows across his short career. Sharing the stage with the likes of Jimmy Barnes, Justice Crew, Mark Vincent and Bonnie Anderson, Tony also opened shows for Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran during their Sydney showcase. Taking part in a number of high profile shows, the young artist had the chance to perform the Australian National Anthem at major sporting events nationwide – proving his irresistible live presence.

SASKIA LANE EMPOWERED

SINGLE ‘HIDE & SEEK’

OUT NOW

At a time when most people find themselves hiding from the world and seeking for purpose, Melbourne-based Folk/Pop Singer-Songwriter Saskia Lane found her resolve. After rediscovering her love for songwriting earlier this year, she is definitely hiding no more—now ready to unveil the power of a broken woman who has finally found her voice—starting with debut single ‘Hide & Seek’, and is now available on all streaming platforms!

With production and mixing by Cheyne Luke and mastering by Mark Ashfield, the single’s poignant theme about embracing the person you have become was penned by Saskia herself. The piano-based piece is an ode of love to every woman who has ever felt displaced and forgotten—perfectly complemented by Saskia’s hauntingly soothing and heavenly vocals, nuanced with a somber key that preludes to the breakthrough and freedom of being unapologetically comfortable in one’s skin and spirit. It’s a love story to every woman who’s ever felt displaced and forgotten.

After a 15-year break from music following a family tragedy, Saskia’s journey to healing comes with her desire to help others heal. Very much tied to the story behind ‘Hide & Seek’ is the birth of Yellow Tulip Boxes, an organisation designed to help women who are experiencing grief, by empowering, inspiring, and supporting them through self-love and education. The subscription boxes are set for release in February 2021.

“It’s more important to be true to your current self than to live in the shadows of your past.”—Saskia Lane

Influenced by the anti-folk, indie-pop sound of Regina Spektor, Alessia Cara, Missy Higgins, Sia, and Fiona Apple, among others, Saskia is set to make her own mark in the industry. This rising star’s depth and unabashed authenticity lyrically, vocally, sonically, and emotionally makes her a standout among her contemporaries. With a single and an EP set to be released in 2021, there’s no reason to hide and search for a sound as refreshing as hers. She has it all, folks! So make sure to follow her socials down below for more updates!

DOLPHIN FRIENDLY RELEASE RIPPING NEW SINGLE ‘KILLING SILENCE’ OUT NOW ON MEOW

DOLPHIN FRIENDLY RELEASE RIPPING NEW SINGLE ‘KILLING SILENCE’ OUT NOW ON MEOW

DOLPHIN FRIENDLY RELEASE

RIPPING NEW SINGLE

‘KILLING SILENCE’

OUT NOW ON MEOW

Hard-hitting rock group Dolphin Friendly unleash their new single ‘Killing Silence’ today via the MEOW label. The Christchurch quartet have become a ground-breaking force on the New Zealand musical landscape, with this latest politically charged single set to take them to new heights.

‘solid gold grooves, soulful questing lyricism and in-the-pocket psych-rock riffage, guaranteed to conjure warm summery vibes to stave off the chilliest autumn evening.’ – Under The Radar

‘if you dig Aussie acts like Ocean Alley, Skegss and Bootleg Rascal, you’re sure to find something you love in Dolphin Friendly.’ – Ditch This Magazine

Renowned for high energy, wild and engaging live performances, the band recently announced a run of headline single launch tour dates across New Zealand, to compliment an already bumper summer schedule packed full of festival appearances. Stay tuned for the rescheduling of Australian tour dates with Mako Road.

Within two years of the band’s inception, they have charged the New Zealand music scene aggressively, having played some genuine feats such as Rhythm and Vines, Electric Avenue, Soundsplash, and opening for Kiwi and Aussie thumpers Shapeshifter, Lime Cordiale, Skegss, Bootleg Rascal, Jungle Giants, L.A.B and Mako Road.

Previous releases ‘Preashology’ (EP, 2019) and ‘Tunes From The Tuna Can’ (EP, 2018) have stamped the band as a sonically diverse coastal psych-rock force to be reckoned with, earning them a loyal fanbase along with a slew of media admirers.

Dolphin Friendly established their name from the band’s motivation to promote strong movement towards sustainability and social well-being, broadcasting their disregard for the degenerate systems and corporate mindsets destined to fuck the planet and its people through selfish greed and ignorance. The band are known for their passionate voice that confronts those systems with a powerful message, something that is so ingrained in their music and live performance.

With a work hard, play harder attitude, their motion promotes an awakened message based on their passion for music that is delivered from the heart of living from the present, all with the intention to create a better world. The band endeavour to back this up by actively donating 10% of all their tour profits to disadvantaged individuals, communities, or relevant causes in need.

A statement from the band: “Like most of our music, Killing Silence came to fruition as we acted on a strong feeling we felt as a band. The song is our way of acknowledging the existence of systemic racism around the world (and in New Zealand and Australia) vocalising how we think we can act in a more understanding way as society by accepting hurt and hardship, guiding us to a movement and awakening of greater unity. Although the song rides a wave positive change through its euphoric chorus’s, the rap and heavy rock counterparts speak anger for the people in the present. Ultimately, we want to promote messages for the better of the world, we just write music to avenue it”.

Dolphin Friendly: Sam Mander – Vocals/ Rhythm Guitar, Ben O’ Carroll – Drums,
Thomas McHutchison – Bass, Thomas Klever – Lead Guitar

ans got an early taste of this forthcoming album with last month’s release of “Wallflower”, which can be streamed today here: https://ffm.to/gfwallflower.

“’Wallflower’ was the last song I wrote for our upcoming album,” Feldmann shared in an exclusive interview with Alternative Press. “It’s coming out later this year on my own label (Big Noise) and that just is a very full circle moment that I am so proud of.”

Goldfinger formed in 1994 and has since been regarded as a contributor to the revitalization of ska music’s popularity in the mid-1990s before leading the charge on the 2000’s pop-punk movement. ACCLAIMED PHOTOGRAPHER/FILMMAKER JAMES MARCUS HANEY TO RELEASE DEBUT PHOTOBOOK, ‘FANATICS’

ACCLAIMED PHOTOGRAPHER/FILMMAKER JAMES MARCUS HANEY TO RELEASE DEBUT PHOTOBOOK, ‘FANATICS’

ACCLAIMED

PHOTOGRAPHER/FILMMAKER

JAMES MARCUS HANEY TO

RELEASE DEBUT PHOTOBOOK,

‘FANATICS’

James Marcus Haney, the LA-based photographer, and director of the acclaimed music documentary ‘No Cameras Allowed’ announces the release of his first photo book, FANATICS. The book is available for pre-order via https://stop-and-fix.com/

Haney pulls together photographs of fans from his time touring with Coldplay, Elton John, and Mumford & Sons, alongside the countless festivals and shows he’s been to right across the world. Capturing the spirit and sheer elation of witnessing live music with friends, the book features imagery from concerts in 35 different countries, spanning the decade of 2010-2020.

Accompanying these images are stories and testimonials from musicians Haney has toured alongside, including Chris Martin of Coldplay, Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe, Maggie Rogers, Lars Ulrich from Metallica, Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons, Albert Hammond JR of The Strokes, and many more, all talking about the importance of fans and anecdotes and memories of their own as fans themselves. The book opens with a foreword penned by Elton John, who Haney has also been out on the road with.

Explaining the inspiration behind the book, Haney recalls: “Back when I was in college, I couldn’t afford to go to music festivals so I would sneak into them with my friends.  Often, I used a ‘borrowed’ camera from school and posed as a press photographer.  I filmed all the bands I loved and used the guise of a fake press pass to get as close to the stage as possible.  After a few festivals, I cut together a short documentary of my friends and I sneaking into Coachella and Bonnaroo.  At another show, I handed a roadie a burnt DVD copy of my short doc, who then passed it onto the band he was teching for, Mumford & Sons.  Soon, I found myself on an old-school vintage train chugging across America with Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, and Old Crow Medicine Show as part of the Railroad Revival Tour.”

My passion for touring came at a cost though: as my time on the road coincided with my final exams at film school.  I forfeited a college degree but made some of the best friends of my life and embarked on a career adventure that I could never have dreamed of.  Through touring the world with artists like Mumford & Sons, Elton John, and Coldplay, I was able to immerse myself in all sorts of cultures and musical worlds and all sorts of wild crowds and fans.  I found myself taking photos of fans everywhere – there was something so captivating about watching people completely lost in the music, witnessing that spiritual experience.”

This book is a culmination of a decade of touring the world and the truckload of film negatives that have amassed in that time.  It captures the emotions, fashions, and faces of the 2010 decade through live music.  And it is only now, from the depths of the pandemic, do these photographs remind us of a time, so recent yet so different, and represent the ultimate experience to look forward to again.

Words on FANATICS by Elton John:
FANATICS is a book that celebrates that dedication, that music fan’s rite of passage, what you might call the magical festival spirit. It’s partly the sense that you can do whatever you want – get drunk, get high, have sex, whatever – at least for a weekend. And it’s partly that the one thing that’s bonding everyone together at a festival is the love of music. You can see that spirit, that common humanity, in the photos in this book. Marcus has captured that indomitable festival spirit brilliantly through these photographs. With his trusted camera in hand, he’s the ultimate fly on the wall or the fly on the canvas of the tent. He seizes these moments, almost like the invisible man, catching people in every imaginable state – in rapture and in decay, the ecstasy, and the agony.
