RETURNS HOME AND TURNS HER LYRICAL GAZE INWARDS ON FILMIC NEW ALBUM

The first song Emily Barker recorded for her latest record, Fragile as Humans, was its title track. To capture the “hyper-real recording” he desired, producer Luke Potashnick surrounded Barker with microphones at The Wool Hall, an impressive sixteenth century stone building converted into a studio by Tears For Fears in the early ’80s. She accompanied herself on Potashnick’s 1938 Gibson L37 archtop guitar. They recorded six takes, but the first was the best.

Written and recorded as her time living in the UK was coming to a close, Fragile as Humans sees Barker turn her lyrical gaze inwards. The expansive themes of her previous album, A Dark Murmuration of Words (released 2020), are replaced by an empathetic concern for matters more personal, familial, closer to home.

Feathered Thing was written while she navigated cumulative grief following a miscarriage. “It’s basically about grieving an idea or imagined future,” she clarifies of the song, the central image inspired by Emily Dickinson’s poem ‘“Hope” is the thing with feathers’. Commencing gently, with oscillating piano and distant drums, the arrangement gradually transforms into an instrumental dervish of vibrant strings and cymbal crashes. Throughout, Barker’s vocals float and hover like a slipstreaming feather.

“I had this idea of putting Emily out front, diving further into what her voice could do and exploring much quieter parts of her voice,” Potashnick explains. “Every single line had to be faultless, otherwise the illusion and the contract between her and the listener would collapse.”

Barker’s introduction to Potashnick had come via their mutual friend, producer and engineer Dom Monks (Big Thief, Nick Cave, Laura Marling). Barker shared some demos she’d been working on and fondly recalls, “Luke noted my harmonic choices and lyrics – two aspects I’d worked particularly hard at – and asked what sort of album I’d like to make.”

Potashnick set about placing each song under the microscope, line by line. “I’d never spent so long working on the songs with a producer before and really trusted Luke with his background in songwriting,” Barker reflects. “The songs were made stronger through him pushing me to dig deeper, to tweak a part, to substantiate a choice.”

Barker worked on editing the songs while touring the States with Mary Chapin Carpenter, performing and refining them on the road. On her return she was ready to begin recording.

The album’s calling card, the filmic single Wild to be Sharing This Moment, introduced the production ideas: “We wanted to push the dynamics, so it could be intimate in parts and cinematic in others,” Barker reveals, “whilst also exercising restraint; creating tension.”

Ahead of the Fragile as Humans songwriting sessions, Barker wrote the word ‘EXPERIMENT!’ on a postcard and pinned it to a cork board in her writing room alongside family photos, postcards of Aretha Franklin and Red-tailed black cockatoos, and “a strip of paper from my niece wishing me a happy day”. This word, in all caps, served as a reminder for Barker to challenge herself creatively and actively pursue the unknown: “I wanted to favour the odd and less obvious lyric, chord progression, melody.”

LISTEN TO

FRAGILE AS HUMANS ALBUM

The closing track, Acisoma, began as an imagined question to Sir David Attenborough about life and death, but soon metamorphosed into something completely different. “I sat at the piano and moved my fingers around trying not to think about it too much,” she recounts. “Some chords fell into a loose order, I set my voice free to roam and hit record on my iPhone. Listening back to my sketch, it didn’t sound like anything I’d written before – my word [EXPERIMENT!] had infiltrated my process.”

When it came to recording Acisoma, Potashnick revealed—just before hitting RECORD—that the microphone he’d set up was the one Dom Monks had used on Nick Cave’s vocals at Alexandra Palace. “I loved the sound of Idiot Prayer – using that very same mic lent me an appropriate mood for capturing the song.”

Potashnick’s vision is present throughout the album: the meditative, introverted Loneliness was a song Barker had envisioned with full-band production, but Potashnicks’s instinct was to keep it minimal: a felted piano, a dulcimer and a trio of strings to add haunting textures. Barker acknowledges, “Luke got it right…it’s lonelier this way.”

Half of the album’s tracks are solo, Barker accompanying herself either on guitar or piano. These songs were recorded first and then she was joined by the session players – Tim Harries (electric and double bass/piano/string arrangements), Tom Visser (drums) and Richard Causon (keys) – at The Wool Hall, tracking the remaining songs in a matter of days.

Album opener With Small We Start showcases the band, the song’s warm acoustic aesthetic drawing the listener into Barker’s discourse on the benefits of concentrating on the simple things in life.

Call it a Day chronicles Emily’s positive experiences – friendships, music connections – from two-plus decades spent living in the UK.

“Making this record was a beautiful way to wrap up my 21 years of living in the UK before heading home to WA,” she points out.

As a teenager, Barker left Western Australia, with an acoustic guitar and a backpack, first arriving in England in the summer of 2000. She has previously written entire albums about longing for home, but Fragile as Humans was inspired and written in both hemispheres: during a writing residency in Stroud, while people-watching at London’s Kings Cross station and upon returning to WA following the state’s strict, pandemic-related border closures.

The ten songs on Fragile as Humans take us on a deep dive into the human condition, an unflinching self-examination of grief, pain, loneliness and loss, at the same time sparkling with hope, optimism and connection.

“If I could choose one word for people to hold in their minds as they listen to this album,” Emily muses, “that word would be: compassion.”

Fragile as Humans is scheduled for release on 3 May through Everyone Sang / Kartel Music Group.

SHARES NEW ALBUM

MEMORY MORNING

OUT NOW

VIA MONDAY RECORDS

Pioneering electronic musician Tourist shares his fifth album ‘Memory Morning’ out now, on his own imprint Monday Records.

Following the successful release of singles like ‘EST’, ‘Second Nature’, ‘A Little Bit Further’, ‘Valentine’, and ‘Crush’, Tourist’s new album, ‘Memory Morning’, promises an immersive journey through nostalgia and disorientation, offering a captivating departure from his previous works. Garnering support from a wide array of electronic music media outlets, including Pitchfork, Music Tech, DJ Mag, and Magnetic Mag, Tourist’s releases have enjoyed significant radio play, totaling 824 spins across 7 networks, including heavyweights like BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 6 Music, reaching a combined audience of over 8.3 million. Esteemed tastemakers such as Clara Amfo, Lauren Laverne, Pete Tong, Steve Lamacq, and Sian Eleri have all supported, with Tourist also set to take on the esteemed Radio 1 Essential Mix in July.

Reflecting on the album’s creative journey, Tourist shares, “‘Memory Morning’ is one of those albums that really took shape as I wrote it. Often my music draws from specific life events, but this album truly lives in and was born from my imagination. I wanted to write something that felt like it whisked you away, an album that felt like a ‘place’, its own world, somewhere you might find new corners with each listen.”

With ‘Memory Morning’, Tourist explores new sonic territories, drawing inspiration from a diverse range of influences, including shoegaze, psychedelic music, and the lush strangeness of artists like Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, and The Avalanches. The album’s 10 tracks offer a rich tapestry of soundscapes, from swirling pianos to pulsating house beats, each contributing to an immersive and dreamlike atmosphere. Made with the same, simple home set-up he used during the pandemic – an OP1 synthesizer, a laptop, a smartphone – ‘Memory Morning’ moves away from explicit autobiography and towards a mood-based, instinctive style of electronic songwriting and composition.

Tourist further elaborates on the album’s concept, stating, “I wanted Memory Morning to be disorientating in the nicest possible way; to sound like a memory of the music you love.’ It’s the effervescent feeling of when you discover a new piece of music – and particularly in the act of listening on headphones, which is a miraculous experience that I think people take for granted, to feel as though you are physically inside the music.”

Growing up in London and Cornwall, Tourist fell in love with rave music played on pirate radio transmissions and club sound systems, which later evolved into a passion for the melodies of house and synth-pop, shaping the Tourist sound. Across several EPs, he has remixed a striking variety of artists, showcasing his versatility and creativity. After winning a Grammy Award in 2015 as a co-writer for Sam Smith’s massive hit single ‘Stay With Me’, he has released four albums under the moniker Tourist – 2016’s ‘U’, 2019’s ‘Wild’ and ‘Everyday’, and 2022’s ‘Inside Out’ – all on Monday Records.

Having garnered widespread acclaim for his previous album ‘Inside Out’, Tourist continues to push boundaries and captivate audiences worldwide with his innovative sound and soulful melodies. With accolades including a Grammy win and collaborations with industry giants like Sam Smith and The Weeknd, Tourist stands out as a visionary artist in the ever-evolving electronic music landscape. As the release of ‘Memory Morning’ approaches and with headline tours selling out rapidly, Tourist demonstrates that he is poised to captivate an even larger audience with his artistry.

MELBOURNE POP POWERHOUSE GREG GOULD RELEASES SEXUAL ABUSE ANTHEM ‘WHO GAVE YOU PERMISSION?’

MELBOURNE POP POWERHOUSE GREG GOULD RELEASES SEXUAL ABUSE ANTHEM ‘WHO GAVE YOU PERMISSION?’

MELBOURNE POP POWERHOUSE

GREG GOULD

RELEASES SEXUAL ABUSE ANTHEM

WHO GAVE YOU PERMISSION?’

Primal, moody and inescapably moving, the powerful new single Who Gave You Permission? out now from Australian powerhouse Greg Gould is a potent blend of pop, soul and searing intimacy. With an accompanying music video slated to land next week, and also set to captivate crowds with his latest release live in action throughout 2024, including onstage at SYNTHONY, Australia’s biggest orchestrated dance party this June, Gould also vigorously tackles exceedingly difficult narrative terrain via Who Gave You Permission? with unwavering finesse and poise.

Opening with a melancholic piano line, Who Gave You Permission? swells alongside Gould’s cogent vocals, ultimately building into a formidable primal pop anthem. Equally gripping musically as it is lyrically, Who Gave You Permission? weaves nods to the likes of Benson Boone, Rag’n’Bone Man, Teddy Swims and Sam Smith while also profoundly detailing an exceedingly personal experience for Gould himself.

“To be honest I’m only just starting to feel comfortable to talk about this,” shares Gould. “The first time I performed the song live I burst into tears. I have been a victim of sexual abuse on four separate occasions in all very different circumstances from when I was 10 years old, right up until I was 30. Each time left me feeling so violated, so powerless, paralysed. Nobody has the right to touch you without permission. No means no. It was a very emotional, heart wrenching and confronting experience to write this song to be honest as I’d pushed a lot of those feelings and
experiences down and hadn’t dealt with them – it took a while for me to be ok to admit it. There is a stigma around sexual abuse in general, and I do think it can be really difficult for men who are the victim – whether it be at the hands of another man or a woman. In my case, it was both on separate occasions. I want other men to feel comfortable to talk about this and speak up too.”

Seeking to empower fellow survivors through Who Gave You Permission? Gould co-wrote the compelling new single with Benedict, working alongside Gould to unpack his trauma and ultimately pen a connective and sonically robust ode to survival, along with production by Sydney duo Cressbrook, with live strings composed by Ryan Youens. With a striking music video set to accompany this deeply powerful song on April 20, filmed in Gould’s home state, the clip for Who Gave You Permission? flourishes with its sonic elegance alongside poignant visuals to further
amplify the driving message at the track’s core. “The music video features a protagonist moving through an old house,” shares Gould.” As they enter each room, a different storyline unfolds, each scenario reveals as we move back and forth between the rooms. I wanted to highlight that sexual abuse can happen in many forms and in many ways…without over-dramatising or sensationalising it.”

A creative cauldron from way back, Greg Gould began singing the moment he could talk; a talent which ultimately followed him to securing the runner up slot at the grand finale of Australia’s Got Talent in 2013. Following his Australia’s Got Talent success, Gould has gone on to generate
millions of streams as well as views of his award-winning videos, perform multiple sold out shows and festivals, tour the globe and ignite charts at home and abroad; and all while continuing to foster and grow an authentic connection with his fans through his heartfelt creations.

From snagging the #1 spot on the iTunes Albums charts via his 2020 album 1998, through to collaborating with En Vogue’s Maxine Jones (“a real pinch me moment”, Gould shares), Gould’s proudest moment to date remains releasing his first-ever self-directed music video, a cover of
En Vogue’s 1996 smash single Don’t Let Go (Love) with the song’s heart wrenching video having amassed an impressive 20 million+ views. Fast-forward to 2024, and Gould has embraced the mixture of excitement, anxiety, nerves and relief to unveil the vulnerable yet hopeful Who Gave You Permission? with the latest track also offering a hint as to what’s to come from Gould’s debut album of original songs, Strings Attached, set for release July 12, including his duet with one of the Philippines’ most successful artists, Morissette called Love It All Out (co-written by Bachelor Girl’s Tania Doko) which recently hit over 1 million views on TikTok. Gould has also written and performed the main song for the credits of a new Australian feature film getting its theatrical release later this year, which is set to debut at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Set to perform Who Gave You Permission? at an array of events this April and June, fans can expect to hear Gould’s latest track live in action alongside many other original songs. As to what fans can expect in the not too distant future? “Whether the subject matter is darker or lighter, guests at my shows can expect big vocals, big moments and lot of fun,” Gould enthuses. “I love to perform and I’m excited for the next 12 months! I’ve got big plans and even bigger dreams. I am so proud that Who Gave You Permission? is out now and I’m moving forward both personally and professionally! I would love if even one survivor of abuse feels stronger as a result of hearing this song. I want people to know they are seen, they are heard and they are believed. We won’t be broken.”

Who Gave You Permission? is out now.
Strings Attached is out July 12.

Destined to be a performer, Marcagi grew up playing in rock bands in his hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio, before he began creating and posting solo endeavours on TikTok, his videos drawing in fans from across the world.

Viral track Scared To Start’ pushed his TikTok view counts into the millions, and catapulted Marcagi into the spotlight at the start of 2024. Reaching the Top 10 in the UK and US as well as Top 20 in Australia and New Zealand, the song’s instant popularity cemented Michael’s status as a folk prodigy, securing a record deal with only two songs to his name.

Releasing his highly anticipated debut EP American Romance earlier this year, the project exudes timeless sounds and songwriting that proved Marcagi’s talent for authentic storytelling. Working with producer David Baron (Lana Del Rey, The Lumineers, Shania Twain), the two were able to create a debut album that excelled, with Ones To Watch naming it “the calling card of one of 2024’s most exciting new artists”.

Now, with global streams of more than 100 million and close to 20 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Marcagi will hit the road for the first time this year as a signed artist, poised to continue his incredible trajectory. It’s been an unforgettable start to a truly iconic tour, with Canadian rockers SIMPLE PLAN currently on our shores for their 2024 Australian run. And as of today, SIMPLE PLAN‘s entire down under tour is now officially sold out, with sold out signs hung up for all shows alongside supports BOYS LIKE GIRLSWE THE KINGS and JAX.

“Thank you so much to all of our amazing Aussie fans for selling out every single date of the tour! We’ve been coming to Australia since 2003 and the shows just keep getting better and better. We absolutely love playing here and we’re so grateful for all your love and support. We already can’t wait to come back!”
– Simple Plan

As the song goes: “I’m gonna be iconic, yeah”. One of the most enduring names in the world of pop punk, Canadian rockers SIMPLE PLAN have returned to Australia in 2024. From their new millennium rise to MTV superstardom through to pop punk’s modern resurgence that has introduced their iconic, multi-platinum sound to new audiences around the world, Simple Plan have been an indelible part of pop culture for more than two decades, dominated by the fact that they’ve never lost sight of what got them there in the first place: their fans.

The quartet, formed in Montreal in 1999, enjoy the rare sort of artist-audience dynamic that’s never dulled over time. Free agents for the first time in their storied career, 2022 saw SIMPLE PLAN keep their circle tight to bring to life their sixth studio album Harder Than It Looks, with a lack of deadlines and pressure from external forces enabling them to finally deliver the record they wholeheartedly wanted to make. In doing so, they rekindled a spark they didn’t know was missing.

Revered for their timeless and immersive live performances, as well as smash singles including I’m Just a Kid and Welcome to My LifeSIMPLE PLAN‘s touring history spans Blink-182, Green Day, Avril Lavigne and Good Charlotte, as well as unforgettable festival sets across the globe, including their show-stopping appearance at Australia’s Good Things Festival in 2019.

Since forming as teenagers in 2004, BOYS LIKE GIRLS have skyrocketed from their humble beginnings in damp basements and garages to wielding half a billion Spotify streams alongside multiple platinum and gold-certified releases. Following a hiatus and eventual jubilant return in 2016, BOYS LIKE GIRLS are set to release their first new album in over a decade, with SUNDAY AT FOXWOODS due out in 2023 before returning once more down under in 2024.

Armed with a buoyant spirit and emotionally poignant songwriting, Florida’s WE THE KINGS erupted straight outta the gates in 2007 with their self-titled debut album, spawning the ear-candy single Check Yes Juliet which would go on to claim its stake as one of the most iconic songs of the late 2000s. Now in command of eight studio albums and a ever-growing legion of fans, WE THE KINGS‘ catchy material is as renowned their charismatic live show.

JAX, a music and social media sensation after amassing close to 15 million TikTok followers and releasing her top 40 smash-hit Victoria’s Secret in 2022 has captivated audiences around the world with her powerful vocals and dynamic performances. Recently collaborating with SIMPLE PLAN on a reimagined version of the band’s single Iconic, JAX showcases her versatility and ability to seamlessly fuse different genres of music.

SIMPLE PLAN continue their Australian run tonight in Melbourne, before performing in Sydney, ticking off two shows in Brisbane and closing out on Thursday 18 April for a second and final performance in Sydney closing out this monumental tour.

CREATURE FEAR

RELEASE NEW SINGLE

SORBET

AHEAD OF HIGHLY ANTICIPATED RETURN TO THE HEADLINE STAGE

SINGLE LAUNCH TOUR ON SALE NOW

Naarm-based retro pop / garage rock outfit Creature Fear today return with their first release of 2024 – the tongue-in-cheek, introspective new single “Sorbet”. Stream HERE. “Sorbet” arrives ahead of the band’s first headline shows in almost two years, and as songwriter and vocalist Cameron Graham reflects, was “composed in a state of self-awareness and frustration.”

“The song paints a picture of an unhealthy relationship with food, using it as a coping mechanism and the complications that surround it,” he continues. “While it was written in a way that’s somewhat ambiguous, ‘Sorbet’ expresses determination to break free from difficult patterns and persevere through mental health challenges, though at the same time expresses a lot of self-doubt.”

Creature Fear emerged from an evolution-driven creative hiatus in late 2023 with their dancefloor-filling indie rock anthem Adulthood. The release saw the band debut a refreshed lineup, with two new members – Louise Gaul (vocals) and Liam Brennan (bass) – joining Cameron Graham (songwriter/vocals), Larni Pearce (drums) and Jason Mercieca (guitar). With more fresh material at the ready and a revitalised sense of enthusiasm, Creature Fear will make their highly anticipated headline return next week at Last Chance Rock & Roll Bar. The local launch will be followed by a stint in NSW next month, with headline shows in Wollongong and Sydney. Tickets are available HERE.

ABOUT CREATURE FEAR

Quirky, nostalgic, and undeniably compelling, Naarm outfit Creature Fear offer up a dynamic blend of 60s retro pop and garage rock that playfully swings between lighthearted and introspective.

The collection paved the way for the band’s electrifying festival appearances at Beyond The Valley, Grapevine, and New Years On The Hill, as well as sharing the stage with the likes of Ball Park Music, Boo Seeka, Killing Heidi, The Delta Riggs, Tired Lion, and Kingswood. SECRETS OF FUTURE
DUE OUT FRIDAY 31 MAY

UNLEASH DYSTOPIAN NEW SINGLE/VIDEO
KILLSTAR (THE COLD WORLD)

In 2024, the secret is out, the future is now; and its name is Reliqa.

Following on from their 2022 EP, the endlessly innovative I Don’t Know What I Am, Sydney-based alternative luminaries Reliqa take a daring and dexterous step into a brand new chapter, today announcing the upcoming release of their debut album Secrets of the Future, due out on Friday 31 May via Greyscale Records and Nuclear Blast Records. Pre-orders are available now via https://grysclrec.lnk.to/reliqa.

Heralding the arrival of Secrets of the Future is the brand new single Killstar (The Cold World); a scintillating progressive metal opus oozing with vitriolic guitarwork and serpentine vocals spliced between rapid-fire delivery, all building towards a pummeling climax that will leave you utterly breathless.

A lush, diverse and sci-fi-hued collection of songs that traverse fleeting moments of the human experience, Secrets of the Future also possesses a melting pot of stylistic inspiration, with elements spanning melodic metalcore through to contemporary rap, K-Pop, J-Metal, atmospheric pop, modern progressive metal as well as more traditional rock and metal.

With Secrets of the FutureReliqa aren’t merely gazing at what’s to come; instead, they conjure it with poise and finesse, unpacking a rich and vivid tapestry that explores political injustice on tracks like Killstar (The Cold World), finding power in femininity on Sariah, as well as oscillating spotlights on the inner push-and-pull between protest and acceptance of reality.

“Aesthetic-wise, Secrets of the Future has some soft sci-fi elements to it, especially through the artwork and some of the soundscapes throughout,” shares the band of their forthcoming debut album. “We say ‘soft’ because it’s not a fictional concept album, but with the album title focusing so much on the future, the vibes are inherently dark, ominous, foreboding, a little bit dystopian at times.”

“Our songwriting style shifted in 2023 when we started writing this album,” adds the band, “and that change in workflow is another reason why some of the songs on this record are so different to anything we’ve done before, like Cave, Terminal, Crossfire and Two Steps Apart.”

Defying genre labels and harnessing their potent sonic identity in the heavy music landscape over the years, Reliqa have evolved from being “ones to watch” into an act destined for genuine greatness.

Whether dazzling onstage supporting the likes of SpiritboxHalestormSevendustBABYMETAL or Northlane, whipping festival crowds into a frenzy or headlining their own shows, Reliqa never cease to enamour in a live setting alongside multiple singles commanding over 2 million individual streams, including Doomed and Mr. Magic.

Most recently flexing their nuanced take on heavy modernity with their 2022 EP I Don’t Know What I AmReliqa brandished dark grooves, layered soundscapes, electronic flourishes and more. I Don’t Know What I Am may have initially stemmed from the group themselves and the broader music industry being unable to categorise Reliqa‘s unique and immersive stylings; but ultimately, it’s the group’s bold and boundless sense of self that radically sets Reliqa apart from your standard heavy act.

Facing the future to their impending new album and fresh off supporting American rock powerhouses Halestorm for their Knotfest Australia 2024 headline sideshows, Reliqa are primed to take on the world.

CLOE WILDER

SHARES ETHEREAL NEW SINGLE

AFTERGLOW
NEW EP I SPENT MY SUMMER ON THE ROAD

SET FOR RELEASE APRIL 19

A stunning mix of romance and nostalgia, the new single Afterglow from American singer-songwriter Cloe Wilder is a shimmering modern folk gem, marking an ethereal step closer to the release of Wilder’s impending new EP I Spent My Summer on the Road, set for release on Friday April 19.

A folksy ballad soaked in acoustic guitar and dreamy melodics, Afterglow also features glossy vocals from both Wilder and her long-time collaborator NICOLOSI, with the track reminiscent of Bon Iver and Lana Del Rey caught in a gauzy trance. Simultaneously introspective and
wistful with celestial overtones, Afterglow ultimately evolved from a melancholic narrative, as Wilder elaborates, “Escaping from locations is a big theme in my songs, but I also love the concept of leaving someone behind. Afterglow sort of morphed into this story of two people growing apart in the wintertime the understanding that the house has gone cold and there’s no way to imagine what that could feel like until it happens. I absolutely love that visual.”

Following on from her debut 2021 EP Teenage Lullabies, Wilder spreads her sonic wings on her upcoming EP, with I Spent My Summer on the Road traversing everything from stripped-back bedroom pop (Little White Pills) to coming-of-age odes (Fake ID), lush indie swoon (Take It In),
folk-hued warmth (Afterglow) and enraptured calm (Five Years). And while still laden with youthful exuberance following the release a few years ago of her debut EP at the age of 14.

I Spent My Summer on the Road is a stirring and disarming experience, with Wilder once again
finding magic alongside NICOLOSI and an array of influences, as Wilder explains, “I started writing with Sam when I was 14 and working on my first EP. I honestly didn’t let him go after. Lana Del Rey is my ultimate reference for everything. Bon Iver, Matt Maeson, Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeroes, The Lumineers, Florence & The Machine, and so many more came into play. This EP is a testament to the last three years of my life. It’s my coming-of-age scrapbook through the lens of being 17 and confused. In the course of processing that evolution, I started to accept it and I had to write about it.”

Emerging as a teenager armed with earthy melodies, wistful narratives and gossamer vocals, Cloe Wilder’s innate ability to evoke warm and familiar melodies with her witticism and heartfelt lyricism aligns her comfortably as a Floridian young Taylor Swift, with sonic poise well
beyond her young years. Dabbling in the bedroom pop realms of Lana Del Rey and Phoebe Bridges as well as folk and modern sentimentality, Wilder is as much a confidante as she is a conduit for evocative and memorable music.

With her previous single Call Me If You Need Me currently in command of over 1 million individual streams, Wilder also has an array of live performances in her wake, including Breaking Sound in Los Angeles, and supports with EMELINE, Spencer Sutherland, Steinza and is currently on the road with Charlotte Sands. And in 2024, her journey continues with the impending release of her sophomore EP, I Spent My Summer on the Road.

“I put out my first EP out when I was 14, so I’m beyond excited for this new introduction,” Wilder concludes. “These songs are really important to me, and I’ve loved being able to grow with them.”

Afterglow is out today.
I Spent My Summer on the Road is due out on Friday April 19.

FRANK TURNER RELEASES NEW SINGLE ‘LETTERS’

FRANK TURNER RELEASES NEW SINGLE ‘LETTERS’

FRANK TURNER

RELEASES NEW SINGLE

LETTERS

new album ‘UNDEFEATED’ to be released on May 3rd

via Xtra Mile Recordings

Frank Turner has just released a brand new single ‘Letters’, the latest track following ‘Girl From The Record Shop’, ‘No Thank You For The Music’ and ‘Do One’ to be taken from his tenth album ‘Undefeated’, out May 3rd via Xtra Mile Recordings. On the single he says, “‘Letters’ is a song that I’ve been working on for a long time; in some ways I’ve been writing it since a genuine pen-friendship of mine dried up when I was a kid, when the mix-tapes stopped coming through the post. It’s a song about communication and its breakdown, about nostalgia for teenage romance, and about how reassessing those things as an adult can be the start of a healing process.”

“Now I’m surprised to report that as I enter my forties, I’ve returned to being an angry man,” he sings on the recent track ‘No Thank You For The Music’. And that’s a concise statement as to what to expect from ‘Undefeated’, Frank’s follow-up to his first UK #1 album, 2022’s ‘FTHC’. Finding the sweet spot between youthful outspokenness and surviving midlife’s challenges, it’s a record that explores both emotionally compelling topics and lighter reflections on those troubles that eventually come to most of us. Who you are versus who you wanted to be in your youth; life-altering love; fading friendships; wistful nostalgia; the mental fallout and political consequences that still linger from the pandemic era and the more prosaic issue of persistent backache.

Frank says, “There are no clichés about the difficult 10th album, so in some ways, that’s a liberating statement. But at the same time, I have a duty to justify writing and releasing a 10th album. That’s a lot of records for anybody. Also, I’m 42. Which is not a sexy, rock’n’roll age. But all through my career, I’ve been interested in writers like Loudon Wainwright III or The Hold Steady, people who write about adulthood, essentially.”

While thematically ‘Undefeated’ is informed by this time in life, sonically it’s full of echoes to influences that Frank has touched upon at various moments in his kaleidoscopic career. It switches from Black Flag to Counting Crows, from Descendents to The Pogues, via Elvis Costello and Billy Bragg. Its freewheeling nature is reflective not only of his new-found independence, but also of the creative environment he found himself in. As usual, it was entirely written by himself, but this is the first album that he produced himself, recorded in the home studio that he and his wife, Jessica Guise, share on Mersea Island, Essex. It features his live band: Ben Lloyd (guitar), Tarrant Anderson (bass), Callum Green (drums) and Matt Nasir (piano).

The release of ‘Undefeated’ will of course see this punk-rock road-warrior tour with the tenacity and intense schedules that he’s renowned for (such as the sprawling 50 States in 50 Days North American tour) but with even bigger ambitions that will be revealed in due course as he nears his 3000th gig. But for now, anticipate the new album: a typically energizing, literate, playful and provocative set from a musician who remains ‘Undefeated’ after a quarter-of-a-century in the game.

PRAISE FOR FRANK TURNER

“Frank Turner goes back to hardcore and a whole lot more on superb ninth album, FTHC.”

KERRANG! ****

“Incredibly powerful”

NPR MUSIC

“Who better than Frank Turner to underscore the imminent joy of reconnecting with others?

Generally, this sort of earnestness can be wearying, but Turner succeeds because he sounds

like he’s just stomped out of a stuffy meeting to go yell on a street corner, frantic with

Euphoria.”

THE NEW YORK TIMES

“‘The Gathering’ is appropriately arena-sized from the start as Turner bellows over booming

drums and towering glam rock riffs. The track ends with Isbell unleashing the mightiest guitar

solo he can muster.”

ROLLING STONE (US)

“Stepping away from the more folk sounds of his last few albums, Frank and his band bring

back the fast-paced punk tunes that make you want to stand on a table and sing along.”

ESKIMO JOE SHARE DRIVING NEW SINGLE THE ‘FIRST TIME’

ESKIMO JOE SHARE DRIVING NEW SINGLE THE ‘FIRST TIME’

ESKIMO JOE

SHARE DRIVING NEW SINGLE THE

‘FIRST TIME’

A buoyant yet bittersweet ode to nostalgia, Australian alternative rock icons Eskimo Joe return armed with The First Time; the band’s first new music since 2021’s 99 Ways. Set to appear at Lookout Festival alongside Live and Incubus before embarking on their National Acoustic Theatre Tour starting this April, The First Time feels familiar yet fresh, with Eskimo Joe capturing the essence of their stadium rock-ready triumph, 2008’s Black Fingernails, Red Wine, alongside some sharp 2024 vigor.

Drawing inspiration from long-time Eskimo Joe creative influences as well as the band’s unshakeable bond, the core of The First Time also evolved following a stacked 2023, with multiple festival appearances sparking the trio to harness the energy of a giant crowd setting into their 2024-penned new track. “We really look up to bands like the Rolling Stones and U2 – those guys who keep touring and creating music over and over again,” shares bass player and vocalist Kav Temperley. “It makes us proud of our musical journey and the people who have taken our songs into their lives. Eskimo Joe is still the three core members. It just wouldn’t be the Eskies without the three of us in a studio or on-stage making music together – our friendship is as much a part of the band as the music itself.

After an amazing 2023 of playing some huge festivals, there’s this indescribable energy when a massive crowd is singing your songs back at you. We wanted to capture that energy and infuse it into our recording. So, in the first week of January this year, over five days we wrote and recorded The First Time at my studio in Fremantle.

Opening with Temperley musing “I found myself looking for you, I wonder if you’re looking for me” over glimmering instrumentation and a driving beat, The First Time simultaneously tugs at your heartstrings while charming with creamy melodics and soaring choruses. An undeniable instant Eskimo Joe classic, The First Time ultimately delves into upbeat sentimentality, as Temperley elaborates, “We wanted to write something that set out to encapsulate the bittersweet feeling of nostalgia, that looks back through rose coloured glasses conveniently forgetting the heartache and sleepless nights that came with a certain place and time in our lives. It’s easy in the loneliest moments to look back and take comfort in those memories secretly holding onto that feeling like an addict. The song is also a realisation that holding onto the past might also be holding you back from the present. The subject is nostalgic but so is the sound of this song, it sounds like it could have sat perfectly on the Black Fingernails album.”

Lead guitarist Stu MacLeod says, “You put so much energy into each song, you build it up, tear it down, build it back up again until it matches the band’s vision. I love the energy in this song and the sentiment, and I’m stoked that we get to release it out into the world.” Drummer and guitarist Joel Quartermain adds, “Once it’s out in the world, a song truly exists. Hopefully people connect with it.”

The accompanying music video beautifully documents Eskimo Joe’s many years as a band, with nostalgic footage of their many achievements over the years.

Forming in 1997, Eskimo Joe would go on to become one of Australia’s most enduring acts, with six studio albums and ongoing commercial success in their wake, including 2004’s A Song Is A City and 2006’s Black Fingernails, Red Wine reaching Platinum status, and the latter dominating the ARIA Top 50 Chart for 62 weeks. The Eskimo Joe journey from Fremantle indie rock darlings to an international success story has also seen the band’s impact expand well beyond the studio, with ongoing chart success, 35 ARIA nominations and eight wins, two APRA Awards, countless appearances at major festivals and events across the globe, and frequent appearances in triple j’s Hottest 100 countdown, including their single Black Fingernails, Red Wine taking out the #2 spot in the Hottest 100 of 2006. With performances spanning Sound Relief, Live Earth, at the Sundance Film Festival or, closer to home, at Big Day Out, Splendour In The Grass and, most recently, Good Things Festival,

Eskimo Joe’s craftsmanship is only amplified by their swaggering live prowess; and it’s this very fact that inspired the band’s newest sonic output while also firmly showcasing Eskimo Joe’s ever-present vitality in the music scene decades into their career.

“It feels great releasing some new music with Eskimo Joe,” Temperley says. “We had such an amazing year last year, playing all different kinds of shows, and ending the year with Good Things Festival that saw us playing in front of crowds of 30,000. We left 2023 feeling so connected with our audiences that we felt that now is the right time to write a new tune.”

“Kicking off in April, we take to the road for the Lookout Festival, unveiling our new single with icons like Incubus and Live,” Temperley concludes. Straight off the back of the festival – April through August, we embark on a 22-show acoustic journey across Australia. This tour allows us to present our music in a more intimate setting, strengthening our connection with our audience. Each performance is crafted to deepen the musical experience, blending the high energy of festival shows with the personal touch of our acoustic sessions.”

AUSTRALIAN SONGSTRESS EMALIA RELEASES PROVOCATIVE NEW SINGLE ‘ANGELS ALL GUCCI’

AUSTRALIAN SONGSTRESS EMALIA RELEASES PROVOCATIVE NEW SINGLE ‘ANGELS ALL GUCCI’

AUSTRALIAN SONGSTRESS

EMALIA

RELEASES PROVOCATIVE NEW SINGLE

ANGELS ALL GUCCI

Following her recent release, ‘Stacks’, independent artist and actress, Emalia unveils the eagerly anticipated follow up single ‘Angels All Gucci’.

Emalia finished 2023 on a high with a standout performance in the Paramount+ drama, Paper Dolls where she played the lead role of Izzy James in all-girl group, Harlow.  Emalia knows first-hand the battles she faces as a real-life artist in today’s entertainment industry.

From the outside, fame can look so shiny, nice, and appealing but there can be a lot of abuse of power.  A lot of that is hidden and people don’t necessarily get to see how it affects the artists that are going through it.”

The sultry ‘Angels All Gucci’ is a reclamation of one’s voice and power. It’s a 90’s R&B inspired anthem that celebrates femininity and speaking one’s mind. The concept challenges the idea of what a ‘good girl’ is expected to be in society and rejects the notion it puts forward.

The track is a collaboration between female powerhouse song writers Emalia, Chelsea Warner and Nardean. “I hosted a writing camp to create my next project. The girls and I had so much fun writing this one in a little holiday home in Terrigal. ‘Angels All Gucci’ stood out instantly and was one of our favourites.”

Emalia is heavily involved in every aspect of the creative process of her career. From singer, songwriter to creative director, Emalia co-directed, styled and set designed the visualiser for the single.

Often while I am writing a song, I will see the visuals for it in my head. I see colours that correspond to the sonics and mood of the song, and the overall visual aesthetic that I feel represents it. When I sit down to develop it, I start with a Pinterest board to find the right references and I continue to build from there. I often see shot lists in my head.

I wrote up my treatment and pitched it to Kate Cornish, who I have worked with on previous visual projects in the past. I love her eye, and she is so supportive of emerging artists. She goes above and beyond. I was super grateful to work with her on this, she really brought the vision to life.  I was lucky enough to have the support from Australian jeweller, Simon Curwood who loaned me all the beautiful jewels including a Diamond double halo tennis necklace featuring 1.51ct cushion cut centre diamond, set in 18k white gold valued at $100,000, it was the perfect piece and an honour to wear!” Said, Emalia.

Adding “I wanted to create an ethereal and angelic aesthetic that juxtaposes the strength of the lyrics and sonics for both the cover art and visualiser. My dad and I created the cloud by hand over the course of two days. It was my first time set designing, and we had a lot of fun with it.  Long-time collaborator, Brianna Burford of Essencia Images shot the cover art, it was a real family affair!”

Emalia recently hit the road with her new single and played at the Poppin Out Music Festival along with headliners Sneaky Sound System and Cece Peniston in Adelaide.

I’m excited to get out and perform live again with this new material, I can’t wait to see how audiences react to them in a live setting.

Angels All Gucci’ is out now across all streaming platforms.

FLEETING PERSUASION RELEASE NEW ALBUM ‘WILL THEY COME BACK’

FLEETING PERSUASION RELEASE NEW ALBUM ‘WILL THEY COME BACK’

FLEETING PERSUASION

RELEASE NEW ALBUM

WILL THEY COME BACK

After a string of well received singles over the last 14 months, Fleeting Persuasion release their sophomore album Will They Come Back.

Shared ideas and mutual musical inspiration is the name of the game for Fleeting Persuasion’s James Harrison (guitar/vocals). Following a string of well-received singles, written and recorded with producer Josh Whitehead during the pandemic years of 2021/22, James began flexing his creativity with ex-Sounds Like Sunset drummer Tobey Doctor (drums/bass).

The latter contributed drums, bass and studio chops to their 2022 single ‘Etched‘, a song that twitched and surged with chiming indie rock melodies and angular post-punk shapes, before they released ‘Slipped‘, which further explored their minimal and deeply emotive music. Both songs featured on Backseat Mafia and received widespread community radio airplay including 3RRRPBS 4ZZZFBi and 2XXFM.

There’s a collection of songs I’ve been working on with Tobey,” says James. “He’s got quite the producer’s brain and so the drums, bass lines and production have been his vision. I haven’t needed much convincing as we both love similar sounds and textures!

Their third single ‘Still Dark, which premiered on Vital Bits on 3RRR and online with Black of Hearts, possesses both a sparkling, bright musical optimism and woozy melancholic guitar sounds that jar and unsettle beautifully, like that Midas touch of My Bloody Valentine when they sonically subverted guitar rock in the 80s.

The most recent single ‘Faded‘ is an experimental shoegaze song (a radio edit is also available on request) featuring a disorientating blend of overdriven bass, sparkling guitar and James’s trademark melancholic croon. The song was described by Backseat Mafia in their single premiere as “extremely exhilarating pulse quickening stuff, as if someone threw My Bloody Valentine in a blender and added a dash of Cocteau Twins and The Cure before blitzing for 24 hours and then detonating for good measure.”

Across the album the duo navigate the history of post-punk, shoegaze, and emotive indie rock; reimagining their influences in a mesmerising stylistic blend that combines both dissonance and compelling hooks.

Find A Way‘ recalls the surging distortion of Swervedriver and Bailter Space, ‘Recall‘ highlights Tobey’s rhythmic dynamics and closer ‘In A Rip‘ serenades the listener with a gorgeous jangly guitar strum and hypnotic bass that places them at the fascinating nexus of Interpol and The Psychedelic Furs.

“There’s lots of colour and textures on the album as a whole,” says James. “That’s what we love. It’s real swimming in your ears, head between the speaker stacks, stuff. You know… blurry guitars, melodic lines and all that!”

Fans of New Order, MBV, The Cure and music that thrives on both melancholic melody and beautiful noise will find much to like about the latest full-length release from the endlessly intriguing Fleeting Persuasion.

FLEETING PERSUASION

Fleeting Persuasion is the latest project of prolific Melbourne-based creative James Spencer Harrison who has also released several well-received albums, singles and EPs under the J M S Harrison moniker. The last of which, 2017’s Traced Out, was leading James towards a denser and richer full-band sound. That inspired a change of name and Fleeting Persuasion was born.

In 2019 Fleeting Persuasion released the album Forever Caught, capturing a set of songs that possessed echoes of The Cure, tightly woven post-rock and Australian acts such as Bluebottle Kiss filtered through his own brand of heart-on-sleeve melancholia. It was certainly indie rock but the kind that resides in the shadows, always carving out new angles and creating interesting dynamics. Now, in 2023, there are a further two Fleeting Persuasion albums in the works.

Splitting his time between Fleeting Persuasion and solo pursuits has established Harrison as a regular fixture on the live music scene, opening for renowned artists including Painters & Dockers, Steve Kilbey (The Church), Jamie Hutchings (Bluebottle Kiss), Peter Fenton (CROW), Hermitage Green (Ireland), The Clouds, China Crisis and She Wants Revenge.

PRESSThere is very much an early The Cure sparseness and melodic thrust, with a refrigerated edge that sends shivers up the spine.”Backseat Mafia on ‘Still Dark’
…a moody post-punk number anchored by propulsive drums and a prominent bass line that utilises a chorus effect a la Peter Hook and Simon Gallup.”Music Feeds video premiere for ‘Etched’
“‘Hollow’ is a track that gets under your skin. With dark synths, melancholic vocals and moody guitars, it’s reflective and moving… enchanting and riveting.”the AU review
“Dripping with a melancholic nostalgia that is hard to capture, ‘Night Arrives’ is a captivating combination of brightly textured instrumentation, brooding melodies, and big 80s snare drum echo/delays, all woven neatly together with smooth-like-butter production.”Forte on ‘Night Arrives’
“Fleeting Persuasion have put themselves on the top shelf with this release. A warm and thought provoking track.”AAA Backstage on ‘Passed Through’
“It’s a compelling atmosphere that somehow exists within two seemingly opposing sonic spaces – with its sleek electronic touches blended against his usual shadowy guitar interplay and looming melodies.”Trouble Juice on ‘Eternal’

Born Jaten Dimsdale, Teddy Swims has journeyed through the depths of self-discovery on his latest release, pouring his heart and soul into his 2023 debut studio album, I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1) – out now via Warner Records. The deeply resonant album chronicles Swims’ personal triumphs and tribulations, and quickly struck a chord with fans. Swims continues to captivate audiences with his soulful voice and genre-defying sound. From soul to funk, gospel to R&B, Swims effortlessly navigates through a diverse range of musical styles, showcasing his remarkable versatility and artistry.

“Now I’m watching people connect with the messages and stories and realising not only are the songs helping me, but they’re also helping them too,” Teddy says of the album, which follows four EP releases. “It feels like all that work on the back end, all that internalising, is finally making a difference.”

From soul to funk, gospel to country to R&B, it all comes back to that unbelievable voice, heard on his early YouTube powerful cover songs (the Journey classic ‘Don’t Stop Believin’’, Shania Twain’s ‘You’re Still The One’) and singles such as ‘Love For A Minute’,  ‘dose’‘911’‘Bed On Fire’ ‘Broke’ (ft. Grammy nominated superstar Thomas Rhett), ‘Love For A Minute’, and many more.

Teddy Swims is only just getting started. Prepare to be swept off your feet when he returns for his highly anticipated tour of Australia and New Zealand this July… tickets on sale Friday!
