GORDI REIMAGINES

‘COVERED IN CHROME’

BY VIOLENT SOHO

The Mushroom Group shares the latest single from its Mushroom 50 project, with Gordi’s gorgeous version of  Violent Soho classic ‘Covered In Chrome’.

Gordi is a cherished part of the Mushroom family, signed to both Liberation Records and Mushroom Music Publishing. Speaking on her approach to covering the song that has evolved into a visceral warcry soundtracking Australian music festivals for the last decade, Gordi explains:

I love it when covers totally reimagine the original and Gordi x Violent Soho was the sort of unlikely combination that interested me. It meant the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone. I also love it because I get to sing HELL F*CK YEAH several times.”

Gordi, aka Sophie Payten, is a treasured artist and songwriter, her 2020 album Our Two Skins earning her an ARIA nomination and two triple j J Award nominations. She has an impressive catalogue and collaboration history behind her, including teaming up with Troye Sivan, a remix for Julien Baker and tour supports for Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Of Monsters and Men, The Tallest Man On Earth and Gang of Youths. During COVID, Gordi swapped the stage for stethoscope, returning to the frontline as an emergency department doctor.

Violent Soho formed in Brisbane in 2004, signing to I OH YOU, part of the Mushroom Group, in 2012. They became one of the biggest Australian bands of the 2000s, with two number one albums – 2016’s Waco and 2020’s Everything Is A-OK. Their ties to Mushroom run deep and their relationship with the late Michael Gudinski was a special one. The band shared: “Michael, like no other, was a rare champion of this important fight in Australian independent music; a fight for a stake in our own cultural identity.”
