‘RICH FRIENDS’
Hailing from the west coast of Australia now based in Sydney, producer Matt Riley better known as WasteLand has established himself as a unique and versatile artist who blends pop with dance music. WasteLand’s new single with BOI, ‘Rich Friends’ demonstrates his ability to create shiny, highly memorable dance music with a melodic pop edge about staying humble and not always following the crowd.
Collaborating with Newcastle based singer BOI, former feature vocalist for LDRU and collaborator of Alice Ivy, Super Cruel, Alex Lahey, The Chainsmokers and more, ‘Rich Friends’ has a nostalgic feel with the horns and 00s pop sonic palette. The track transports the listener to a festival or stadium with it’s inspiring chorus and epic bridges. Despite it’s grand, pop nature, the song still has the groove and danceability that keeps it playing in your head after it’s finished. This memorability is something that Riley was trying to capture during the track’s inception, he shares “we wanted to try and capture that feeling of carefreeness that felt almost nostalgic from songs of the early 2000’s, I really wanted to try to capture that hip hop horns and acoustic guitar feel that I feel doesn’t happen anymore, but wrapped up in a Pop song!”

Speaking on the song Riley says “Rich Friends’ is by far the best piece of music I feel I’ve ever made. If there is one song that I want people to listen to and go “THAT’S WHAT A WasteLand SONG SOUNDS like”. The connection between BOI and WasteLand is immediately apparent and as Riley said “[BOI] definitely took the song and levelled it up, not only vocally, but boy did she nail it.”.
BOI aka Anna Buckingham was immediately captivated by the song’s lyrics, “I heard ‘Rich Friends’ and was instantly drawn to the lyrics of the chorus and the bridge. “none of my rich friends know how to do it for the love like me” and “today ima just do me, it’s a rich world but my loves still free”. Music is tough, doing it for a career is even tougher, but we do it for the love. I have been really excited for the release of this song and feel very lucky to be a part of WasteLands favourite track ever released! ”
WasteLand caught the attention of the industry with his official music video for ‘Tail Lights’ which went viral on Facebook, achieving over half a million views in just a few short weeks and then followed up with the release of ‘Paper Towns’, a collaboration with Norwegian born breakout star Mileo. WasteLand truly is developing a cult following within the pop dance world, and this new song only adds to the notoriety.
