‘FIRST TIME’

A buoyant yet bittersweet ode to nostalgia, Australian alternative rock icons Eskimo Joe return armed with The First Time; the band’s first new music since 2021’s 99 Ways. Set to appear at Lookout Festival alongside Live and Incubus before embarking on their National Acoustic Theatre Tour starting this April, The First Time feels familiar yet fresh, with Eskimo Joe capturing the essence of their stadium rock-ready triumph, 2008’s Black Fingernails, Red Wine, alongside some sharp 2024 vigor.

Drawing inspiration from long-time Eskimo Joe creative influences as well as the band’s unshakeable bond, the core of The First Time also evolved following a stacked 2023, with multiple festival appearances sparking the trio to harness the energy of a giant crowd setting into their 2024-penned new track. “We really look up to bands like the Rolling Stones and U2 – those guys who keep touring and creating music over and over again,” shares bass player and vocalist Kav Temperley. “It makes us proud of our musical journey and the people who have taken our songs into their lives. Eskimo Joe is still the three core members. It just wouldn’t be the Eskies without the three of us in a studio or on-stage making music together – our friendship is as much a part of the band as the music itself.

After an amazing 2023 of playing some huge festivals, there’s this indescribable energy when a massive crowd is singing your songs back at you. We wanted to capture that energy and infuse it into our recording. So, in the first week of January this year, over five days we wrote and recorded The First Time at my studio in Fremantle.

Opening with Temperley musing “I found myself looking for you, I wonder if you’re looking for me” over glimmering instrumentation and a driving beat, The First Time simultaneously tugs at your heartstrings while charming with creamy melodics and soaring choruses. An undeniable instant Eskimo Joe classic, The First Time ultimately delves into upbeat sentimentality, as Temperley elaborates, “We wanted to write something that set out to encapsulate the bittersweet feeling of nostalgia, that looks back through rose coloured glasses conveniently forgetting the heartache and sleepless nights that came with a certain place and time in our lives. It’s easy in the loneliest moments to look back and take comfort in those memories secretly holding onto that feeling like an addict. The song is also a realisation that holding onto the past might also be holding you back from the present. The subject is nostalgic but so is the sound of this song, it sounds like it could have sat perfectly on the Black Fingernails album.”

Lead guitarist Stu MacLeod says, “You put so much energy into each song, you build it up, tear it down, build it back up again until it matches the band’s vision. I love the energy in this song and the sentiment, and I’m stoked that we get to release it out into the world.” Drummer and guitarist Joel Quartermain adds, “Once it’s out in the world, a song truly exists. Hopefully people connect with it.”

The accompanying music video beautifully documents Eskimo Joe’s many years as a band, with nostalgic footage of their many achievements over the years.

Forming in 1997, Eskimo Joe would go on to become one of Australia’s most enduring acts, with six studio albums and ongoing commercial success in their wake, including 2004’s A Song Is A City and 2006’s Black Fingernails, Red Wine reaching Platinum status, and the latter dominating the ARIA Top 50 Chart for 62 weeks. The Eskimo Joe journey from Fremantle indie rock darlings to an international success story has also seen the band’s impact expand well beyond the studio, with ongoing chart success, 35 ARIA nominations and eight wins, two APRA Awards, countless appearances at major festivals and events across the globe, and frequent appearances in triple j’s Hottest 100 countdown, including their single Black Fingernails, Red Wine taking out the #2 spot in the Hottest 100 of 2006. With performances spanning Sound Relief, Live Earth, at the Sundance Film Festival or, closer to home, at Big Day Out, Splendour In The Grass and, most recently, Good Things Festival,

Eskimo Joe’s craftsmanship is only amplified by their swaggering live prowess; and it’s this very fact that inspired the band’s newest sonic output while also firmly showcasing Eskimo Joe’s ever-present vitality in the music scene decades into their career.

“It feels great releasing some new music with Eskimo Joe,” Temperley says. “We had such an amazing year last year, playing all different kinds of shows, and ending the year with Good Things Festival that saw us playing in front of crowds of 30,000. We left 2023 feeling so connected with our audiences that we felt that now is the right time to write a new tune.”

“Kicking off in April, we take to the road for the Lookout Festival, unveiling our new single with icons like Incubus and Live,” Temperley concludes. Straight off the back of the festival – April through August, we embark on a 22-show acoustic journey across Australia. This tour allows us to present our music in a more intimate setting, strengthening our connection with our audience. Each performance is crafted to deepen the musical experience, blending the high energy of festival shows with the personal touch of our acoustic sessions.”

“GIANT’S DESPAIR”

One Step Closer recently announced their highly anticipated new full-length, ‘All You Embrace’, and today the Wilkes-Barre melodic hardcore heroes are back with a daring new single Giant’s Despair.

Due out May 17th from Cooking Vinyl Australia and Run For Cover Records, ‘All You Embrace’ boldly expands the scope of One Step Closer’s sound, offering their most anthemic and passionate work to date.

Lead single Leap Years felt like a bridge from the band’s past into their present (and drew attention from the likes of Stereogum, BrooklynVegan, AltPress, and more), now Giant’s Despair fully displays the soaring sense of unabashed melody at work on ‘All You Embrace’. By far the most dynamic One Step Closer song to date, the track builds to a roaring conclusion that incorporates shimmering shoegaze guitars, towering drums, and triumphant horns.

‘All You Embrace’ follows 2021’s ‘This Place You Know’ and 2023’s ‘Songs For The Willow’ which catapulted One Step Closer into the ranks of the most exciting new bands coming out of hardcore. ‘All You Embrace’ makes good on all of that potential, leaning into the most melodic elements of the band’s sound without sacrificing an ounce of energy. The album finds One Step Closer exploring the sonic overlaps of hardcore, emo, ’90s alternative, and more–resulting in the most ambitious songs they’ve ever written.

“I wanted to showcase One Step Closer in its fullest state,” explains vocalist Ryan Savitski. “Every single part of the band, I wanted it to be there. I wanted us to be 100% ourselves and be as authentic to our band as we could possibly be.” And ‘All You Embrace’ is certainly imbued with that sense of identity, a testament to knowing who you are in a world of uncertainties, and a powerful new era for One Step Closer.

The band will also be continuing their non-stop touring ways in support of ‘All You Embrace’. One Step Closer are currently halfway through their North American co-headlining tour with Koyo and Anxious, and in May the band will be heading to the UK for Slam Dunk Festival.

Giant’s Despair is out now and streaming everywhere. ‘All You Embrace’ will be available Friday May 17 via Cooking Vinyl Australia & Run For Cover Records, pre-orders live now.

IJALE EXPLORES THE

BEAUTY OF DELUSION

WITH NEW SINGLE

‘SEASIDE’

Multi-disciplinary creative IJALE today shares new single ‘Seaside’. Once again, the Naarm/Melbourne artist and producer showcases he is in total control of his craft; merging afro-centric sounds that pay homage to his Nigerian heritage, with eclectic and future-facing sensibilities.

An artist of immense talent, obvious tenacity and grit, IJALE is at the centre of his arena; a presenter at triple J Unearthed, prolific collaborator, and genre bending producer. IJALE is as multifaceted as they come – and showing no sign of slowing.

‘Seaside’ explores the ideas of egoism, an individual’s agency over reality, and the often undervalued and misunderstood notion of delusion. IJALE transports his listener; melding mediative verses that hum and cruise beneath melodic rap, with a chorus that drops into a seductive whirlpool of, driving basslines, layered production, and a sumptuous trap beat.

“The track is a meditation on where I’d rather be, and the idea of allowing yourself certain dreams or even delusions to take you out of the realities you want to rewrite.” – IJALE

IJALE cemented his place in the Melbourne music landscape with a nomination for ‘Best Solo Artist’ at the 2022 Music Victoria Awards and was invited to showcase at Sydney’s inaugural SXSW 2023. He has supported the likes of Winston Surfshirt, Kojey Radical and Kota The Friend, as well as Tkay Maidza at The Forum for RISING Festival, and Yazmin Lacey in Sydney; played a sold-out headline set at Phoenix Central Park and Section 8 late last year, plus played as part of Valve Sessions.

Genesis Owusu, Kojey Radical, Bakar, and Cruel Santino are some of the artists most aligned to IJALE’s creative output. He has two masterful bodies of work already under his belt – Wildy Disparate Sounds (2020) and OTTN (On To the Next) (2021) – and a knack for phenomenal collaborations: releasing ‘OR WHAT (Feat. VOLDY)’, ‘OKOK (Work)’ with VOLDY and OX4ORD, ‘WYA’ with Valve Sounds label mates Maina Doe and King Ivy, plus featuring on Dugong Jr’s ‘Coup De Grace’.

Multi-disciplinary by nature, IJALE has lent his keen production skills to artists BTV, and VOLDY – his production and feature work on the latter – earning VOLDY a Music Victoria Nomination for ‘Best Hip-Hop Work’. IJALE has also recently cut his teeth as a composer scoring an upcoming Reebok advert, set to air later this month.\

IJALE is at the forefront of merging genres and creative artistry coming out of Australia. ‘Seaside’ is tender and confident step further into the evolving depths of IJALE’s world.

NEW SINGLE

“SPLIT TONGUE”

Newcastle metalcore outfit Vilify pack a punch on their latest single Split Tongue, out everywhere today. The band will tour the new track across the East Coast on the Fever Dream Tour in May – tickets on sale now.

Split Tongue is the second track to release off upcoming EP ‘Fever Dream’, out Friday April 19. Vilify’s brand new face-scruncher goes straight  those who deceive, overpromise and under-deliver in the business of music. “Split tongue is about those slithery, slippery little snakes that are only out for themselves,” explains the band. “The tracks draws from the disdain we have all felt from believing in and taking chances on people in the industry only to have it returned to us like a kick in the teeth. The music industry is already hard enough and once you sprinkle in some rats it becomes a full blown blood bath.”

Debuting on triple j The Racket, Split Tongue walks listeners a little closer towards the release of their sophomore EP, ‘Fever Dream’, produced by Chris Blancato (Reliqa, Northlane) and mixed and mastered by Mark Williamson (Inertia). The extended play will feature previously unleashed ripper Light Bringer, and will get a run around the East Coast in May on the Fever Dream Tour, supported by St Sinner. The tour will visit Brisbane, Tamworth, Adelaide, Ballarat, Melbourne, Sydney and Newcastle.

The Fever Dream Tour announces just shortly after Vilify slayed at Brisbane’s CVLTFESTlate February alongside metal heavyweights Alpha Wolf, Crossfaith (JPN), Emmure(US), Paledusk (JPN), Ocean Grove, Diamond Construct and more.

Vilify is Amy McIntosh (vocals), Deni Hourihan (guitar), Kieran Jackson (drums) and Lizi McIntosh (bass). Since their inception Vilify have explored all corners of their alternative metal genre, and across their releases they’ve developed a sound that is uniquely their own. Vilify hone in on their darkness through their lyrical content and have found a way to ensure every song has its own identity, while staying true to the goal of keeping crowds moving and listeners feeling.

Never a band to shy away from heavy subject matters, their standalone single, Take The Pill, was described by NME Au as “crushing” as vocalist McIntosh divulged that the track is about, “the battle of balance between SSRIs, depression and drive”. Their latest single Light Bringer dominated on the airwaves with play on triple j The Racket, short.fast.loud,Home & Hosed and Drive and an add to Unearthed rotation. It featured in Knotfest’s She’s With The Band Spotify playlist and was added to Apple Music’s New Music Dailyand Heaps Heavy playlists.

Vilify have clocked tens of thousands of digital streams since their inception and have established themselves as a band on a mission to help others through candid storytelling and unrestrained live performance.

CONRAD SEWELL RELEASES UPLIFTING NEW SINGLE ‘ALL LIFE LONG’

Conrad Sewell

CONRAD SEWELL

RELEASES UPLIFTING

NEW SINGLE

‘ALL LIFE LONG’

Multi-platinum-selling singer and songwriter Conrad Sewellreleases new single ‘All Life Long’, a soulful revelation about his demons and overcoming them with love

He has performed at New York’s famed Madison Square Garden, won an ARIA award, and his hit song with Kygo ‘Firestone’ has garnered more than one billion streams on Spotify alone.

But throughout his acclaimed career, the Brisbane-born artist has battled addiction, which nearly caused him to lose it all. Now, that journey and ultimate recovery is explored in ‘All Life Long.’

‘All Life Long’ pulls no punches as it begins with a soulful ballad, before switching gears to blend soul and pop, creating both an emotive and captivating song that stays with you long after its runtime. Conrad’s dynamic vocal performance and thoughtful lyrics serve as an uplifting love letter to his family and the importance of cherishing those you care about.

Known for his ability to write with unmatched vulnerability and perform with that same raw energy on stage, Conrad wrote the track in Los Angeles with producer Josh Cumbee, drawing on intensely personal experiences, inspired by the sonic palette of soul and R&B records Conrad grew up listening to.

“All Life Long is a song about accepting that we all have demons and things that we do, habits that may cause problems in our lives and coming to accept that maybe we’ll do them forever. And that kind of back and forth that you fight with, you know, with those things that can affect you in a negative way. I’ve talked about my issues before, but never quite like I have in this song.” – Conrad Sewell

Currently on tour around Australia including sold out shows in Brisbane and Sydney, ‘All Life Long’ adds to Conrad’s set list of career highlights.

A little more about Conrad Sewell…Carefully honing his craft, ARIA Award-winning, multi-platinum-selling singer and songwriter Conrad Sewell had ascended to international renown by 2019. He garnered the coveted Song of the Year honour at the 2015 ARIA Awards for his breakout solo single ‘Start Again’, with follow up hit ‘Hold Me Up’ clocking over 58 million Spotify streams and followed by his acclaimed debut EP All I Know.

Between touring with Ed Sheeran, Maroon 5, and Kygo, Conrad earned praise from Entertainment Weekly, Teen Vogue, Vice, NBC, and Nylon who proclaimed him to be “Australia’s next great pop export”. Simultaneously, his voice carried to nearly every corner of the globe on Kygo’s ‘Firestone’, reaching RIAA platinum status, generating over 1 billion cumulative streams, and entertaining audiences everywhere from Coachella to Madison Square Garden. He joined forces with the late Avicii for the hit ‘Taste the Feeling’ in addition to featuring on worldwide hit ‘Sex, Love & Water’ with Armin van Buuren.

AUSTRALIAN SONGSTRESS EMALIA RELEASES PROVOCATIVE NEW SINGLE ‘ANGELS ALL GUCCI’

AUSTRALIAN SONGSTRESS

EMALIA

RELEASES PROVOCATIVE NEW SINGLE

ANGELS ALL GUCCI

Following her recent release, ‘Stacks’, independent artist and actress, Emalia unveils the eagerly anticipated follow up single ‘Angels All Gucci’.

Emalia finished 2023 on a high with a standout performance in the Paramount+ drama, Paper Dolls where she played the lead role of Izzy James in all-girl group, Harlow.  Emalia knows first-hand the battles she faces as a real-life artist in today’s entertainment industry.

From the outside, fame can look so shiny, nice, and appealing but there can be a lot of abuse of power.  A lot of that is hidden and people don’t necessarily get to see how it affects the artists that are going through it.”

The sultry ‘Angels All Gucci’ is a reclamation of one’s voice and power. It’s a 90’s R&B inspired anthem that celebrates femininity and speaking one’s mind. The concept challenges the idea of what a ‘good girl’ is expected to be in society and rejects the notion it puts forward.

The track is a collaboration between female powerhouse song writers Emalia, Chelsea Warner and Nardean. “I hosted a writing camp to create my next project. The girls and I had so much fun writing this one in a little holiday home in Terrigal. ‘Angels All Gucci’ stood out instantly and was one of our favourites.”

Emalia is heavily involved in every aspect of the creative process of her career. From singer, songwriter to creative director, Emalia co-directed, styled and set designed the visualiser for the single.

Often while I am writing a song, I will see the visuals for it in my head. I see colours that correspond to the sonics and mood of the song, and the overall visual aesthetic that I feel represents it. When I sit down to develop it, I start with a Pinterest board to find the right references and I continue to build from there. I often see shot lists in my head.

I wrote up my treatment and pitched it to Kate Cornish, who I have worked with on previous visual projects in the past. I love her eye, and she is so supportive of emerging artists. She goes above and beyond. I was super grateful to work with her on this, she really brought the vision to life.  I was lucky enough to have the support from Australian jeweller, Simon Curwood who loaned me all the beautiful jewels including a Diamond double halo tennis necklace featuring 1.51ct cushion cut centre diamond, set in 18k white gold valued at $100,000, it was the perfect piece and an honour to wear!” Said, Emalia.

Adding “I wanted to create an ethereal and angelic aesthetic that juxtaposes the strength of the lyrics and sonics for both the cover art and visualiser. My dad and I created the cloud by hand over the course of two days. It was my first time set designing, and we had a lot of fun with it.  Long-time collaborator, Brianna Burford of Essencia Images shot the cover art, it was a real family affair!”

Emalia recently hit the road with her new single and played at the Poppin Out Music Festival along with headliners Sneaky Sound System and Cece Peniston in Adelaide.

I’m excited to get out and perform live again with this new material, I can’t wait to see how audiences react to them in a live setting.

Angels All Gucci’ is out now across all streaming platforms.

FLEETING PERSUASION RELEASE NEW ALBUM ‘WILL THEY COME BACK’

FLEETING PERSUASION RELEASE NEW ALBUM ‘WILL THEY COME BACK’

FLEETING PERSUASION

RELEASE NEW ALBUM

WILL THEY COME BACK

After a string of well received singles over the last 14 months, Fleeting Persuasion release their sophomore album Will They Come Back.

Shared ideas and mutual musical inspiration is the name of the game for Fleeting Persuasion’s James Harrison (guitar/vocals). Following a string of well-received singles, written and recorded with producer Josh Whitehead during the pandemic years of 2021/22, James began flexing his creativity with ex-Sounds Like Sunset drummer Tobey Doctor (drums/bass).

The latter contributed drums, bass and studio chops to their 2022 single ‘Etched‘, a song that twitched and surged with chiming indie rock melodies and angular post-punk shapes, before they released ‘Slipped‘, which further explored their minimal and deeply emotive music. Both songs featured on Backseat Mafia and received widespread community radio airplay including 3RRRPBS 4ZZZFBi and 2XXFM.

There’s a collection of songs I’ve been working on with Tobey,” says James. “He’s got quite the producer’s brain and so the drums, bass lines and production have been his vision. I haven’t needed much convincing as we both love similar sounds and textures!

Their third single ‘Still Dark, which premiered on Vital Bits on 3RRR and online with Black of Hearts, possesses both a sparkling, bright musical optimism and woozy melancholic guitar sounds that jar and unsettle beautifully, like that Midas touch of My Bloody Valentine when they sonically subverted guitar rock in the 80s.

The most recent single ‘Faded‘ is an experimental shoegaze song (a radio edit is also available on request) featuring a disorientating blend of overdriven bass, sparkling guitar and James’s trademark melancholic croon. The song was described by Backseat Mafia in their single premiere as “extremely exhilarating pulse quickening stuff, as if someone threw My Bloody Valentine in a blender and added a dash of Cocteau Twins and The Cure before blitzing for 24 hours and then detonating for good measure.”

Across the album the duo navigate the history of post-punk, shoegaze, and emotive indie rock; reimagining their influences in a mesmerising stylistic blend that combines both dissonance and compelling hooks.

Find A Way‘ recalls the surging distortion of Swervedriver and Bailter Space, ‘Recall‘ highlights Tobey’s rhythmic dynamics and closer ‘In A Rip‘ serenades the listener with a gorgeous jangly guitar strum and hypnotic bass that places them at the fascinating nexus of Interpol and The Psychedelic Furs.

“There’s lots of colour and textures on the album as a whole,” says James. “That’s what we love. It’s real swimming in your ears, head between the speaker stacks, stuff. You know… blurry guitars, melodic lines and all that!”

Fans of New Order, MBV, The Cure and music that thrives on both melancholic melody and beautiful noise will find much to like about the latest full-length release from the endlessly intriguing Fleeting Persuasion.

FLEETING PERSUASION

Fleeting Persuasion is the latest project of prolific Melbourne-based creative James Spencer Harrison who has also released several well-received albums, singles and EPs under the J M S Harrison moniker. The last of which, 2017’s Traced Out, was leading James towards a denser and richer full-band sound. That inspired a change of name and Fleeting Persuasion was born.

In 2019 Fleeting Persuasion released the album Forever Caught, capturing a set of songs that possessed echoes of The Cure, tightly woven post-rock and Australian acts such as Bluebottle Kiss filtered through his own brand of heart-on-sleeve melancholia. It was certainly indie rock but the kind that resides in the shadows, always carving out new angles and creating interesting dynamics. Now, in 2023, there are a further two Fleeting Persuasion albums in the works.

Splitting his time between Fleeting Persuasion and solo pursuits has established Harrison as a regular fixture on the live music scene, opening for renowned artists including Painters & Dockers, Steve Kilbey (The Church), Jamie Hutchings (Bluebottle Kiss), Peter Fenton (CROW), Hermitage Green (Ireland), The Clouds, China Crisis and She Wants Revenge.

PRESSThere is very much an early The Cure sparseness and melodic thrust, with a refrigerated edge that sends shivers up the spine.”Backseat Mafia on ‘Still Dark’
…a moody post-punk number anchored by propulsive drums and a prominent bass line that utilises a chorus effect a la Peter Hook and Simon Gallup.”Music Feeds video premiere for ‘Etched’
“‘Hollow’ is a track that gets under your skin. With dark synths, melancholic vocals and moody guitars, it’s reflective and moving… enchanting and riveting.”the AU review
“Dripping with a melancholic nostalgia that is hard to capture, ‘Night Arrives’ is a captivating combination of brightly textured instrumentation, brooding melodies, and big 80s snare drum echo/delays, all woven neatly together with smooth-like-butter production.”Forte on ‘Night Arrives’
“Fleeting Persuasion have put themselves on the top shelf with this release. A warm and thought provoking track.”AAA Backstage on ‘Passed Through’
“It’s a compelling atmosphere that somehow exists within two seemingly opposing sonic spaces – with its sleek electronic touches blended against his usual shadowy guitar interplay and looming melodies.”Trouble Juice on ‘Eternal’

Kicking off with back-to-back shows at Perth’s Astor Theatre on Tuesday 23(sold out – rescheduled from 8 May) and Wednesday 24 April (new show), Sanchez will head through Brisbane’s Tivoli on Friday 26 April (sold out – rescheduled from 6 May), Sydney’s Metro Theatre on Sunday 28 (new show) and Enmore Theatre on Monday 29 April (sold out), and Melbourne’s Forumon Tuesday 30 April (sold out) and Wednesday 1 May (new show).

“… it was Sanchez’s voice that was most captivating: velvety, with a controlled, era-appropriate vibrato that echoes back to the likes of Roy Orbison. His vocals were topped with a stage presence that crossed Elvis Presley with Michael Jackson, with sharp little hand movements that exploded into full-body shakes”The Washington Post

In Stephen Sanchez, raw talent arises, and his future promises monumental success. If his name wasn’t on your radar before, it certainly is now”– Spill Magazine

“Stephen Sanchez personifies Elvis… transporting viewers to another era.”Rolling Stone

Stephen Sanchez has materialized at the forefront of popular culture with a sound that’s as timeless as it is necessary for the times. It’s easy to sway into the embrace of his breezy baritone stylings, warm guitar phrasing, and untouchable charisma.

The release of his global hit ‘Until I Found You’ saw the world embrace the swoon-worthy artist. Barely in his twenties, the singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer has already enchanted audiences around the world, with the track reaching multi-platinum status, vaulting into the Billboard Hot 100’s Top 25, hitting No.8 on the ARIA Chart and generating more than 2 billion streams. Heavily influenced by music of the 1950’s and 60’s, Stephen’s stunning catalogue of songs is nostalgic for a time gone by.

Following his much talked-about performances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Late Show with James Corden even an invitation to join Elton John on his final show headlining Glastonbury 2023 – and successive sold-out headline tours, Stephen released his second album, Angel Face last year. A tale-telling project, taking listeners on a journey through fictional 1958 musician The Troubadour Sanchez, Stephen treated fans to sneak peeks of the album on his last visit. Now in 2024, the singer-songwriter will return to perform the perfectly curated sing-along hits fans know and love.

Local singer-songwriter GRAACE will warm audiences across Stephen’s Australian dates. Thrust into the spotlight after she featured on Hayden James 2017 track ‘Numb’, GRAACE has wowed audiences around the country. GRAACE delivered her recent Self Preservation EP, after embarking on a new era of organic pop; through it, she returns to her roots, retaining the candid, goosebump-inducing songwriting that first won her legions of global fans.

A live spectacle with impeccable vocals, don’t miss Stephen Sanchez as he returns to Australia for seven special shows this April and May.

CIGARETTES AFTER SEX ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM X’s

CIGARETTES AFTER SEX

ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM

X’s

Cigarettes After Sex announce their new LP, titled X’s (due July 12), alongside their upcoming world tour, which includes Australia & New Zealand dates in March 2025 and features shows at some of the globe’s most iconic venues, like Madison Square Garden and London’s O2 Arena.

Filled with raw, imagistic, sometimes smutty vignettes set to entrancing, slow burn pop songs, bandleader Greg Gonzalez captures every emotion a romantic arc inspires. But where previous albums have drawn from an amalgam of relationships, for the most part, X’s centralizes on just one relationship that spanned four years.

“The record feels brutal,” admits Gonzalez. “I could sit and talk about this loss to someone, but that wouldn’t scratch the surface. I have to really write about it, sing about it, have the music, and then I can start to analyze and learn from it. Or just relive it—in a good way. I don’t have that Eternal Sunshine-thing of wanting to forget.”

While continuing to observe classic pop song structures, Gonzalez has moved away from the prior sonic touchstones of the ‘50s and ‘60s, finding himself now drawn to a ‘70s/’80s slow dance. While (in typical Cigarettes style) these changes may be subtle, the overall resulting energy is akin to disco ball-refracted tears on the dance floor.

Today also marks the release of the record’s first single, ‘Tejano Blue’, a nod to the music of bandleader Greg Gonzalez’s Texas childhood, resulting in the most instantly memorable version (and liveliest tempo) yet of the band’s signature sensual, timeless, love songs.

Gonzalez explains: “I grew up in El Paso & Tejano music is huge there. You could go to a lot of the bars in the city & hear artists like Selena, Los Ángeles Azules & La Mafia playing over the speakers. It was in the atmosphere around me back then, but I always rejected it & gravitated towards anything else I was attracted to really.

“Years later when I was living in New York City I finally started listening to Selena’s ‘Como La Flor’ at the same time that I was also listening to a lot of Cocteau Twins. I had the idea then to try to combine both of their sounds somehow, which felt a bit strange, but also felt like it was coming from a genuine place of rediscovering & finally connecting with the music that I heard around me in my youth.”

‘Tejano Blue’ is available now, and Cigarettes After Sex’s new LP, X’s, is out July 12th via Partisan Records / Liberator Music.

Cigarettes After Sex will bring their live show to Australia & New Zealand in March 2025. Additional presales will run throughout the week ahead of the general onsale beginning Friday, March 8 at 10am local time at cigarettesaftersex.com.

HEY! ASTRO EXPLORES UPS & DOWNS OF YOUNG LOVE ON ‘SUPERFICIAL’

Hey! Astro

HEY! ASTRO EXPLORES

UPS & DOWNS OF YOUNG

LOVE ON ‘SUPERFICIAL’

Hot off winning triple j Unearthed’s Lost Paradise competition over the summer, Central-Coast indie musician Hey! Astro has dropped his first single of the year: new alt-pop release ‘Superficial’.

“‘Superficial’ is about being in love with someone who has bad intentions. But after escaping this relationship, I’ve realised how much better I am without them.” – Hey! Astro

He captures the heady and addictive confusion of a messy young love, juxtaposing lyrics like ‘my mind’s stuck in maze, made a mess of it all’ with a cool hook-laden soundscape that proudly leans into indie pop-sensibilities.

As the project of talented indie songwriter and musician Owen Elepano, Hey! Astro started as an avenue to explore an early love for music-making. His musical journey starting in 2017, the foundations of Hey! Astro began in the schoolyard, where he developed a talent and love for creating crafty diss tracks against classmates, engaging in friendly battles during these formative years living in Western Sydney.

Fast forward to more recent years, and Hey! Astro has evolved into a dynamic and multi-talented creative, threading individualism throughout each release.

Releasing his debut single, ‘Birthday’ in 2022, Hey! Astro introduced himself as a young artist unafraid to play with form; a track that fits as well within pop circles as it would for indie and hip-hop fans, the fusion of myriad influences brought Elepano early interest from tastemakers at outlets like triple J Unearthed and Rolling Stone Australia.

Following an impressive introduction, 2023 saw Hey! Astro return with dynamic releases ‘Where Was You Going’, ‘Place To Speak’, ‘Wonderland’ and ‘SUPERSTAR’ – the latter featuring fellow rising indie artist Matilda Pearl.

2024 is shaping up to be an exciting year for this incredible young artist. With a full body of work on the horizon, it’s only up from here.

ALTERJOY SHARES ELECTRIC NEW SINGLE “BETTER MAKE A MOVE”

ALTERJOY SHARES

ELECTRIC NEW SINGLE

“BETTER MAKE A MOVE”

Dark-pop solo powerhouse ALTERJOY shares new single Better Make A Move, begging the question – is the price of fame and ego worth losing yourself?

Working alongside established producer Chris Lalic (Windwaker), Ben Heidrich, also known as ALTERJOY, takes a step into the dark side of ambition and desire with his fresh new single. The new track explores our addiction to instant gratification and the hunger for attention as we prioritise status and wealth over human connection, particularly in such a social media driven society.

Better Make A Move is a rock tune at its core, but delves into elements of EDM, metal, dark pop and hip hop, inspired by artists to the likes of Enter Shikari, BILMURI and Ghostmane. Experimenting with a broad range of genres, ALTERJOY sets out on a unique path of self discovery and sonic exploration.

ALTERJOY is the brainchild of singer songwriter Ben Heidrich, predominantly known for his role as drummer in Adelaide alternative metal outfit, The Daily Chase. Relocating to the Gold Coast last year, Heidrich ignites his creativity in the form of ALTERJOY, a project free from genre restraint and restriction.

Launching in 2023, This is Real became ALTERJOY’s debut single, a rock anthem built upon a cinematic landscape, paving the foundations of alternative pop rock mixed with EDM elements. A blend of dark synths and vibrant keys sought to strike listeners in the feels from the first drop.

This year’s sophomore single Hella Good is a fierce and confident cover of a No Doubt favourite. The single reached tens of thousands of streams across YouTube and Spotify and further established ALTERJOY as a newcomer worth watching.

ALTERJOY is a musical odyssey for those craving something refreshingly unique and thought-provoking. Heidrich’s refusal to be confined by convention has led his solo project into uncharted territory, creating a thrilling and unpredictable listening experience.

Better Make A Move is available and streaming everywhere now. Official Single artwork below

DAN SULTAN CELEBRATES

10 YEARS OF BLACKBIRD WITH

LIMITED EDITION

VINYL RELEASE

In excellent news for fans of Dan Sultan today, the esteemed singer-songwriter has announced the release of a 10 Year Anniversary pressing of his acclaimed album Blackbird (out April 26 via Liberation Records), This limited edition, signed pressing of Blackbird has been re-invigorated with a fresh layout and will be pressed on exquisite transparent red vinyl with black dust throughout. Today he also announced a celebratory show with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in July.

Recorded at Nashville’s famous Blackbird Studios with super producer Jacquire King(Tom Waits, Kings Of Leon) and originally released in April 2014, Blackbird debuted at #4 on the ARIA Albums Chart and went on to achieve gold accreditation. Featuring the hits ‘Under Your Skin‘, ‘The Same Man‘ and ‘Kimberley Calling‘, Blackbird took out the ARIA award for Best Rock Album, the AIR Award for Best Independent Blues and Roots Album and a NIMA award for National Cover Art of the Year.

At its core, Blackbird is the simple journey of a man singing about love, desire and identity, where powerhouse riffs are met by crackling gospel interludes, rock and roll, soul jams, pure country tones and bare, aching ballads.

In further celebration of the album’s anniversary, Dan will join the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra during NAIDOC Week to perform songs from Blackbird, along with hits from his extensive catalogue. The MSO will be conducted by Noongar man Aaron Wyatt with musical arrangements from Alex Turley.

Dan says he jumped at the opportunity to reunite with the MSO on this special anniversary, after headlining the Orchestra’s 2023 performance One Song: The Music of Archie Roach.

“I loved the experience of making Blackbird. I spent two months in Nashville and worked with an incredible producer in Jacquire King and was able to take my band with me, Pete Marin and Josh Jones. We all had a wonderful time together and made something really special. It was a huge adventure and something I’ll always cherish. To bring this music to the MSO is a huge honour and a big challenge that I’m very excited about. I think we will make something very special once again.” – Dan Sultan

KUČKA RELEASES MONUMENTAL NEW SINGLE ‘ONE MORE NIGHT (FEAT. FLUME)’

KUČKA RELEASES

MONUMENTAL NEW SINGLE

‘ONE MORE NIGHT

(FEAT. FLUME)’

After years of collaborating and touring the world together, electronic producer/vocalist KUČKA (aka Laura Lowther) and beloved Grammy award winner Flume have joined forces again on mind-melting new single ‘One More Night’.

Salacious and satisfying, ‘One More Night’ is the massive pop moment the pair’s creative partnership has been building to. Seeing its first spin on triple j Breakfast this morning, the track was ideated during a writing session for Flume’s Palaces, alongside his album track ‘ESCAPE (feat. KUČKA)’. It was revived while on tour together in New York a year later.

‘One more night and it’s the last time’ had been stuck in KUČKA’s head that day, a forgotten lyric she couldn’t place. After plugging it into her computer and discovering the forgotten demo, the pair decided to finish it in a conversation enroute to that night’s show, and took it back into the studio a week later. ‘One More Night’ was reborn and built from the original demo’s first verse, this time with KUČKA’s project in mind, culminating in their most collaborative creative effort to date.

“I found myself singing ‘hunger for your desire, body an icon to admire’ and it made me laugh. It captures that ridiculous feeling when you’re infatuated and addicted to your crush. You become a performative cartoon. And it’s just as fun giving the performance as it is receiving it. It’s this horny funny exchange.” KUČKA

Dialling effortlessly between explosive crescendos and moments of near-silence, KUČKA credits Flume’s fearless production choices with nudging her further out of her comfort zone. The release comes with an absurd and campy music video by Natural Fantasy, the moniker of director duo Dillon Howl and KUČKA. In the video, KUČKA plays a tongue in cheek cam girl obsessed with performing bizarre acts for her viewers. The meta nature of the video’s concept —we are watching someone cam-girling — plays on the voyeuristic nature of KUČKA’s songwriting as of late. “I love being an emotional voyeur, that way I can write from anyone’s perspective – even someone created from my imagination. There’s fantasy in that.”

KUČKA has quickly become one of Australia’s most exciting musical exports, now based in L.A.. She boasts major collaborations with A$AP Rocky, Flume, SOPHIE, Vegyn, Mount Kimbie, Machinedrum and more. Her seminal debut album Wrestling received critical acclaim internationally from the likes of triple j, NME, The Guardian, Rolling Stone and SPIN, earning her the cover of Spotify’s Front Left and crush and ambassador title for the platform’s PRIDE campaign.

KUČKA has captivated audiences on stage with Flume at Coachella, LA’s Kia Forum and Red Rocks, while her own headline shows – including a sold out Dark Mofo and specialVIVID Live performance at Sydney Opera House – have earnt KUČKA a reputation an impressive live act, with a mesmerising stage presence and a talent for creating immersive sonic landscapes.

KUČKA’s earnest depiction of her experiences across love and growth have been prevalent through her past releases. But a new era has seen Laura Jane Lowther, the mastermind behind KUČKA, move toward music that transcends herself, writing from different perspectives and experimenting with visual influences.

Flume has won 1x Grammy, 12x ARIAs, 2x MTV Europe Music Awards and 1x Billboard Music Award across his 12-year career. He rose into the main-stage ranks globally with his 2012 debut and Grammy-winning 2016 sophomore effort Skin, both of which topped the album chart in his home country Australia. He has worked with the likes of Lorde, Sam Smith, SOPHIE, JPEGMafia, PinkPantheress, Disclosure, Slowthai, Toro y Moi and more. KUČKA remains one of his favourite voices to work with.
