The chaos of Molly Rocket has been distilled into a polished alt-rock offering in debut EP ‘Syrup’. The promise of sweetness is quickly dismantled as the band explores darker lyrical undercurrents threaded throughout blaring grunge and warped instrumentation.

Since coming together a little over a year ago as a band, they’ve navigated the throws of early adulthood through a piercing and poignant lens. With a sound reminiscent of a cigarette ash-stained comic book, they channel the catharsis of 90s grunge through a modern lens bleeding into the same sonic vein as Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, DZ Deathrays or Bad//Dreems.
Opening the EP is the recently released focus track ‘Rabbit Hole’, a warped descent into insanity where reality bends and confusion runs supreme. The EP then bleeds into un-released ‘Sick Puppy’ a high-energy barreling track that departs from their usual band configuration as Ben Main takes over lead vocals. Following on are previous singles ‘Methany’ and ‘Asphalt’, infernally catchy they pierce the heart with a keen nostalgia for 90s grunge and blaring noise yet channeled through a modern lens.
Closing out the 5-track power-packed EP is never before heard ‘Bones’, more up-beat and pulled back than its predecessors it again features vocals from Ben. Trading the frenetic pace for a more leisurely verse they deliver a hard-hitting chorus expected in any great Molly Rocket track.
Throughout the EP, Molly Rockets’ familiar sound of cathartic hooks and crunchy distortion still remain prime whilst exploring more experimental songwriting. With a constant undercurrent of darker lyricism and gritty grunge, they are able to weave their own narrative as a band and project their image of a band wanting to experiment and push the bounds of their own musicianship. ‘Syrup’ was recorded at Depict Studios with the track mixed and mastered by long-term collaborator Lachy Pitcher (Hindsight, Towns, Pinkish Blu).
‘Syrup’ ultimately showcases a band that has a strong foundation of trust, experimentation and passion for the music they create. Their acute perception of their world quickly gained visibility in the music landscape, with previous singles accruing upwards of 160k streams, scoring editorial playlisting and radio support nationwide (triple j, RTR FM, Double J, Unearthed, SYN Media, Three D Radio, 4ZZZ, 2SER etc).

Just over a year old, Molly Rocket have already unleashed their sound to stages across the country playing support for Polish Club, King Stingray, West Thebarton, Press Club, Ocean Grove, Pacific Avenue, Lazy Ghost, Teenage Joans and Towns. Accompanying the release of Syrup, Molly Rocket will be touring Nationally as the main support for The Rions, engulfing viewers nationwide with their hard-hitting anthems.
