MELBOURNE MINUTE x LOCAL PRODUCERS LAUNCH
MELBOURNE LOFI HIP HOP RADIO
NOW STREAMING 24/7
Melbourne just got its own lofi hip hop radio featuring nothing but local producers. The new 24/7 stream of chill beats is now live on You tube and Twitch.
The hyper-local hip hop stream features tracks from 29 Melbourne music producers including Plutonic Lab, Thrupence, Motley, Elle Shimada, Monkey Marc and Mrs Wallace.
The project is inspired by the worldwide popularity of lofi hip hop streams on YouTube. It is created by Melbourne Minute—the two-woman team of Emerald MacGill and Kim Williamson, who between them have been involved in the Melbourne hip hop scene as a rapper, promoter, artist manager, radio show producer and youth mentor.
The project’s goal is to showcase Melbourne producers and promote Melbourne’s vibrant hip hop scene online, while waiting for the live scene to recover. Local hip hop collectives, labels, and promoters are also getting behind the community platform, including Chilla Holla, The Get Down, and Cyferloop.
“Musicians have been hit hard by the pandemic, especially with the death of our live music scene and Melbourne’s return to a second lockdown. We saw this project as a great way to keep celebrating our local music community.
There might be no gigs on right now, but we can bring the vibe online— while Melbournians are stuck at home and
hungry for something fresh.”—Emerald MacGill
For the stream’s visuals, Emerald recreated the calming scene from a popular YouTube stream, ‘lofi hip hop beats to study/relax to’—this time with a Melbourne flavour.
Filmed in a share house in Melbourne’s inner north and in collaboration with Coral Dawn, the looping video shows a girl studying at her desk, with a plate of smashed avo on toast, a stack of milk crates, a copy of The Big Issue, and an occasional spritz of hand sanitiser.
Melbourne Minute welcomes new submissions and encourages more producers to get on board,so be sure to follow them and reach out through their socials down below.
