Kita first made her mark back in 2015 when she released her first single My Own Way”, which was picked up by Triple J, BBC Radio 1 and French compilation Kitsune, and shortly followed by her debut EP, ‘Like You Want To’.  And while she would go on release more music down the line – most notably her second EP, “Hotel” (2017), the single of which is now ARIA certified Platinum – life had another way of making sure 2015 was a year Kita would never forget. Just three months into their relationship, Kita’s then-boyfriend, now husband and father to her child, pro-surfer Owen Wright, suffered a serious head injury while competing in Hawaii.

“Against The Water” not only is it a telling account of the incident and a glimpse inside their relationship, but it is also a noble love song acting as a meditation on adulting, acceptance and navigating relationships and when life throws you curveballs. Its universal message: I’m in your corner.

“‘Against The Water’ is one of my most honest songs,” says the artist who shoots from the heart. “I’m speaking from the same place as ‘Hotel’, my other traumatic song, but that had more imagery in it, more storytelling. With this one, it’s quite scary in its word for word honesty.”

“When Owen and I first got together, it was an intense kind of love,” Kita recalls. “Even while we were going through all this shit so early on, we still loved each other, and no one really could understand it. We had a lot of family members being like, ‘You don’t have to do this, Kita,” or, ‘Owen, you don’t have to be with her. You guys are still fresh.’”

“The verses for me are the love letter of how we both began, those feelings around it all, and the whirlwind.” While the song is now three-and-a-half years old for her, its sentiment is eternal.

Co-written with prolific UK writer/producer Eg White (Kylie Minogue, Sam Smith, Dua Lipa, Adele, Kimbra) and produced by Kiwi producer Josh Fountain (BENEE, Leisure), “Against The Water” also heralds Kita’s evolution as an artist. “I’m more willing to go with the flow of the song these days,” she says of her processes, a lot of which has her life experiences, including motherhood, to thank.
