‘PEAKED IN HIGH SCHOOL’
Emerging singer-songwriter Isabel Wood returns with introspective single ‘Peaked In High School’ tapping into her ability to strike a chord, this multi-talent manages to find a way to simplify complex themes offering an olive branch to weary listeners who feel the same way.
On her previously released single this year ‘Run & Hide’, Isabel introduced herself with a concentrated wash of energetic, sun-drenched pop. Her second track of the year ‘Peaked In High School‘ takes listeners down a completely different path than its predecessor, an emotive ballad that balances the soft sonic layers to her glassy voice within its powerful soundscape. With recurring themes of sorrow, isolation and grief, this song is a deep exploration of an internal world. The singer says – “it’s for all the people who haven’t quite found their place in the world yet and are starting to wonder if they ever will – trust me, I’m right there with you. The song is basically a diary entry full of existential questions that nobody can answer for me, but I needed to ask them anyway.”
The coming of age narrative in ‘Peaked in High School’ allows us a glimpse of wisdom beyond her years, taking her raw emotions and life experiences and transforming them into a deeply personal, meaningful song. Speaking on the process after the loss of her dad, Isabel shares “This song gave me a chance to bare those emotions and get everything out in the open. It’s not an especially uplifting song, but it’s one that I think lots of people will be able to connect with and I hope it gives them comfort knowing they’re not the only ones wondering whether everything is going to work out for them.”
Having worked previously with renowned producer Xavier Dunn (GRAACE, Jack River) on her debut single ‘Sunburn’ and Konstantin Kersting (Tones & I, Mallrat) on ‘Allergy Season.’ She has been met with industry praise including a range of editorial playlisting, an impressive amount of streams, triple j premieres, rave Unearthed reviews, with Declan Byrne noting ‘Run & Hide’ was “another impressive, sweet, pop track from isabel which sees you get caught up in her storytelling, picturing every moment she describes”.
