BLISS N ESO PUT THEIR SPIN ON ‘HOOPS’ BY THE RUBENS

BLISS N ESO PUT THEIR

SPIN ON ‘HOOPS’ BY

THE RUBENS

The Mushroom Group share the third instalment in its Mushroom 50 project, this week sharing Bliss n Eso’s reinterpretation of ‘Hoops’ by The Rubens. The track is especially poignant for the Group, with The Rubens’ fourth album 0202 being Michael Gudinski’s final #1, debuting at the top of the ARIA charts only a week before he passed. Today’s release follows on from The Temper Trap covering ‘Under The Milky Way’ by The Church, and Missy Higgins’ stunning offering of her version of ‘Wide Open Road’ by The Triffids, with plenty more in store.

Bliss n Eso are a tour de force and have only climbed to new heights since signing with Illusive Sounds in 2006. Their selection is an apt one, with Bliss n Eso really making the version their own. Speaking on their approach to the cover, BnE share:

“‘Hoops’ is an Australian classic that really spoke to us on many levels. In saying that, we thought we could approach it in a fresh way, putting our vibe on it and taking it to a new place while still keeping the integrity of the original song.

We love the hook, as it is a classic Aussie banger. The vocals are very strong and the band is awesome! So we thought it would be a great fit to flip up for the 50th anniversary. ”

‘Hoops’ is The Rubens’ biggest hit – topping triple j’s Hottest 100 in 2016 and going triple platinum. “When ‘Hoops’ got to number one in triple j’s Hottest 100 it was a great celebration,” recalls singer Sam Margin. “And no one celebrated more than MG. It was a great moment to share.” MG had a long relationship with the band, calling them in New York when they were recording their debut album, convincing them to sign to Ivy League Records, part of the Mushroom Group. ‘Hoops’, the title track of The Rubens’ second album, was one of the last songs they wrote for the record. “It’s about being in a relationship with someone who does damaging things to keep you close, when really their actions are pointless because you love them despite it all,” Sam explains.
