Mulubinba/Newcastle-based indie-punk band Turpentine Babycino have just revealed their vitalising new single ‘Calamity‘– produced and mixed by Sean Cook of Novotone Studios.

Launching into action with brisk guitars and robust drums, ‘Calamity’ fulfils the fundamental elements of a resolute punk song, delivered with impenitent assurance and palpable angst. Cruising through dynamic shifts and persistent variation in two-and-a-half minutes, the resilient vocals from frontwoman Georgie Winchester pilot the track to its hooks and climaxes, narrating her perspective of a ruinous college relationship.

Georgie talks about the story behind ‘Calamity’:

“Gabe, our drummer, wrote the music for this song and it was my job to create a story with the lyrics and melody. The music was very energetic and kinda agro which spurred a sleeping monster – memories of my days at college university. I was reading a book at the time in which I found the word ‘calamity’ meaning ‘an event causing great and often sudden damage or distress; a disaster’. This is exactly what happened during my time at college after getting mixed up in a passionately toxic relationship. I decided it was my time to finally write about my experience and get the fuck over it through this track. In my mind, I traveled back to those days at uni and felt everything again which was great as I harnessed the emotions and wrote the song in around 30 minutes. As a band, it’s one of our absolute favorite Turpentine tracks as it sounds awesome live and it’s as real as it gets.”

To celebrate the release, Turpentine Babycino will embark on a 14-date tour across the East Coast of Australia, performing in metro and regional venues. In the live arena, the band appeared on the 2022 lineup for The Gum Ball Festival and have previously shared the stage with The Hard AchesBad//DreemsNortheast Party HouseEliza & The DelusionalsHorrorshowDidirriCarla Geneve and The Screaming Jets.

The band’s debut single ‘Write A Song Sounds Shit‘ was widely embraced by the likes of Apple Musictriple j Unearthed4ZZZ and Edge Radio.

It also received online praise from Life Without AndyThe AU ReviewGC LiveBackseat MafiaAAA Backstage, and local support from The Newcastle Herald. The accompanying music video was added to MTV Upload.

With each member having joined forces from separate projects over the years, the band pride themselves in writing authentic music that translates suitably into their enthralling live shows.
