“PEOPLE THINK I’M OKAY, I’M NOT”
Bedroom pop powerhouse producer yung sum from the US has revealed his bouncy new single “people think i’m okay, i’m not” today, via Black Box. An original piece, written, produced, performed, mixed, and mastered all by yung sum himself, “people think i’m okay, i’m not” is an essential track into the world of yung sum.
Opening with the catchy hook, “I been on my own wave, wave”, “people think i’m okay, i’m not” draws us immediately in with loopy synths, and yung sum’s signature falsetto. The listener is taken from an overarching view (“people think I’m okay, I’m not”) right into yung sum’s brain where he explains though the verses that you know everything about him, all of his bruises, all of the times you had left him on the backburner, and there isn’t any shame in in having battle scars – be it with a lover, or every day life. Though the theme is heavy, yung sum let’s us know that this isn’t the end – people think i’m okay, i’m not, yet.
“I wrote this song because I was going through a difficult time, struggling with depression and anxiety, and just not feeling like I was worth it for anyone,” said yung sum. “This song isn’t supposed to be “eyes on me,” but more of a message of acknowledging that it’s okay to not be okay. The writing was pretty fun though, I just came up with an idea and main melody, and thought it was a perfect medium to share true beliefs, while maintaining a high energy, “banger” feel.”
Last month, bound to the limits of COVID lockdown, yung sum released the visualiser piece for his single “california.” The visualiser was filmed live from yung sum’s home studio rendition of the song. True to his artistry and talent, this live version sounds exactly in line with the mastered recording of the song. In this organic, homegrown video we see yung sum immersed in sound, totally in his element.
Michael (Mikey) Rodriguez, proficiently known as young sum, is at the brink of causing a global scene in the music industry.
