SAPPHO UNVEILS HER
DEBUT EP SAPPHO +
STAND OUT NEW SINGLE
With her debut EP, Sappho – the former Alpine frontwoman Phoebe Baker – introduces us to much more than a musical project. Instead, Sappho invites us into a new universe for the curious, the open-hearted, and the chasers of joy. It’s one that is rich with irresistible groove, unyielding drama, and infectious energy, fashioned by a woman who wants to make clear – there are no boundaries. With lead single ‘Accelerate’, Sappho picks up an already momentous pace, artfully balancing disarming lyrical tenderness with pop infused gusto and euphoria. The release comes as Sappho announces headline shows in Sydney (Golden Age Bar, Sat Sept 3) and Melbourne (Northcote Social Club, Fri Sept 9), as well as a showcase at Brisbane’s BIGSOUND 2022.
Following singles ‘Flex’, ‘Collide’, ‘Scared Angel’ and ‘Trouble’, ‘Accelerate’ is an account of the decision to give in to blossoming new-found love, that “just feels right”. This sentiment is amplified via dynamic melodic surprises that are littered throughout the song. Embracing the power of dichotomy, Sappho is daring yet coy, submitting to a feeling, but only on her own terms. The video perfectly extends this dichotomy. On whimsy and romantic Super 8 film, Sappho dances across golden, sunlit fields in an ethereal gown, a sight contrasted emphatically by her sequin-clad back-up dancers… A classic Sappho apposition!
Sappho was born when Baker found herself exploring ideas and, for the first time, writing music without any real intention. With no limitations, she threw herself into exploring her pop influences. Bursting unapologetically onto the scene as ‘Sappho’ in 2021 with her debut single ‘Flex’, Baker provided us with an idiosyncratic and colourful introduction to a new, vibrant, and vivacious world. From the every-day ‘Fabio’ to the dance princess, and the “alter-inner-granny-ego”, the EP serves to ignite and stir a lust for party, and a zest for life, in almost anyone.
Nowhere is the other-worldly eccentricity and joyous zest that Sappho exudes as clear, as when on stage. Sappho’s live performances have been causing a stir, and rightly so. Augmented by live backing dancers and a visibly love-melded band. Sappho’s live performance is a zealous, and passionate celebration of unity through music. Come and experience the illustrious party for yourself at her upcoming September shows.
