Sydney’s MUNGMUNG bursts onto the scene with her electric sophomore single DM’s; a bright, R’n’B- tinged Trap banger with production, mix, and mastering credits from Taka Perry.
MUNGMUNG has been steadily gaining momentum since the beginning of 2021, dropping her debut track Missed Calls back in February with the lyric video gaining over 20K views on Instagram. On her sophomore single, MUNGMUNG linked up with fellow Sydney-sider Taka Perry after the rising producer and songwriter posted a beat to tik tok asking his followers for collaborators.
The beat on DM’s is impeccable, with an old school R’n’B guitar line and explosive 808s that perfectly com- plement MUNGMUNG’s vocals on the track. Landing somewhere between Doja Cat and Charli XCX, MUNGMUNG’s vocal approach flows from one extreme to another, with beautiful, glittering clean melo- dies, switching flow patterns, and the confident delivery of a seasoned artist.
“Taka posted a Tik Tok with a snippet of a Hip Hop/R’n’B type beat and called for people to duet it. I usually don’t respond publicly to this kind of post but the chords and overall atmosphere of the track just spoke to me. I immediately hit the ‘Duet’ button and freestyled a Chorus, Hook and Rap Verse. Funnily enough, given the theme and eventual title of the song, he kindly dropped by in my Instagram DMs to say some lovely words about my debut single and thereafter, we got to talking about getting in the studio together and now the fin- ished product is ready to grace your ears!” – MU
