The first in a coming trilogy planned for release over the next year, the EP features the already-released songs ‘After Dark’ and ‘Sunday’ along with new offerings ‘Freaks’ and ‘Jazzman’. The EP was entirely self-produced, with the exception of lead single, ‘After Dark.’

The sophisticated and extremely-danceable ‘After Dark’ was released in late September and has slowly but surely worked its way onto a broad range of playlists at DSPs including Spotify’s Front Left, Indie Arrivals and crush, and Apple Music’s Heaps Indie, New In Indie and New In Alternative. It has also clocked spins at triple j, FBI and community radio.

Fans were offered a second taste of the EP via title-track ‘Sunday’, an ethereal, slow-burning jam. The EPs remaining songs – the psychedelic, proggy ‘Freaks’ and the sensual, heady ‘Jazzman’ – round out a sprawling, sonic journey through a range of genres and moods; where moments of quiet contemplation are balanced by hits of euphoria and release, as genre lines are blurred and blended.

“Each EP in this trilogy represents a different side to Micra. Over the last few years, we have been constantly creating and refining. Yet we have only presented a small glimpse into our musical world so far. From songs that came together quickly in one day, to songs that we have spent years tinkering with, each EP is a different exploration of sonics and moods. Our first EP explores the themes of introspection and isolation in different ways. These aren’t always negative emotions leading to negative moments. Sometimes they can be the exact opposite.”

Newcomer ‘Jazzman’ arrives with a trippy self-filmed video, with editing and animations from Sam Mapplebeck (Alice Skye, Gordi, Pond). One of the stand-out moments on the EP, the song had been sitting with singer Ivi for some time before she and Robbie worked it through, and embraces the idea of sexuality.

“It’s exploring sexuality and the more feminine energy within me and being okay with expressing that more openly. It’s not meant to be disempowering in any way, quite the opposite. Women don’t need anyone to make them “feel” any particular way but this kind of highlights the way in which someone can make you connect and realise a place within yourself that you maybe didn’t acknowledge. It feels vulnerable but at the same time very strong which is why “This may sound crazy, but you make me feel like a lady” is one of the lyrics I’m most proud of on this EP.” – Ivi Kafedjiyska

With their debut EP now released and much more music to come, Micra will return to the live circuit over the coming weeks with shows across the east coast, including a headline gig in their hometown at Marly on December 10, shows supporting Wave Racer and an appearance at the King Street Carnival in January.

ABOUT MICRAInitially formed as a sonic experiment, Micra is the creative output of Bulgarian born singer/ guitarist Ivana Kafedjiyska and Australian guitarist/producer Robbie Cain. Together, the duo craft deeply layered, transportive soundscapes that sweep the listener away. To date, they’ve released a stream of notable singles, including ‘Fuzz Captain’, ‘Coral Crush’, ‘Sonata’ and ‘Undercover Lover’. Tracks have received strong support from DSPs as well as via tastermakers such as David Dean Burkhart and RUFUS DU SOL, and have been covered by KCRW, The Wild Honey Pie, The Line of Best Fit, Clash Magazine and Pilerats amongst others. Micra have previously graced stages with Lime Cordiale and performed at Beyond The Valley festival. They were due to support Mansionair earlier in the year, but dates were postponed due to the pandemic.
