MATILDA PEARL
SERVES UP AN INFECTIOUS RETRO, INDIE-POP SINGLE
‘WHAT CAN I DO?’
The 18 year-old singer-songwriter Matilda Pearl recently arrived on the scene with her vibrant indie-pop sound, and earlier this year she announced signing to indie label, Sweat It Out. Now the Mornington Peninsula based talent delivers another colourful and funky indie-pop single, ‘What Can I Do?’, produced by Lewis Stephenson of The Belligerents and Moses Gunn Collective.
‘What Can I Do?’ inevitably finds a way to create an element of nostalgic playfulness but maintaining the Matilda Pearl fresh pop soundscape. Matilda details “We referenced artists like Jamiroquai, Benee, Roisin Murphy and Doja Cat to create cute and sarcastic lyrics while sonically, the track has a retro feel”. Then the pair brought on the incredible Touch Sensitive to add the silky smooth bass, amplifying the dreamy melody Matilda has created.
Matilda Pearl elaborates on the meaning behind the track “‘What Can I Do?’ is about mixed messages. Living in a world that is increasingly online, I think we’ve become more familiar with being online and can throw big statements out with no risk. It’s not a reflection of how someone actually acts around you in real life. Navigating relationships is already hard enough without the pressure of living up to how confident and cool you can seem online.”
