ALEX LAHEY UNVEILS
NEW SINGLE + SIGNS
LABEL DEAL
Melbourne-based singer-songwriter and producer Alex Lahey returns today with her fierce new single, ‘Spike The Punch’. The song is brought to life with a compelling video from Perth-based talent Matt Sav, which will premiere at 3pm AEDT today on YouTube. (View the teaser for the video HERE). The release of ‘Spike The Punch’ also coincides with the announcement of Lahey’s signing to Liberation Records.
An explosive power pop track, propelled by Lahey’s knack for indisputable hooks and fiery, confessional lyrics, ‘Spike The Punch’ marks her first release since writing and recording ‘On My Way,’ the theme song for Sony Picture Animation’s The Mitchells vs The Machines, now Netflix’s biggest animated release of all time. Lahey produced ‘Spike The Punch’ alongside John Castle, with Grammy Award winner Carlos de la Garza (Paramore/Hayley Williams, Cherry Glazerr, Best Coast) lending his mixing skills to the track.
“‘Spike The Punch’ is a song about the fun that comes with self-sabotage and reckless abandon. It’s big, it’s loud, it’s fun, it’s its own beast,” says Lahey. “There are some super sinister tones in there rubbing up against really bright anime style guitar harmonies (guitarmonies, anyone?) and shout choruses. Spike feels like a raucous bookend to navigating these cruelly unpredictable times. Touch wood.

“The video is perhaps my favourite video I’ve ever been a part of. I’m incredibly grateful to Matt Sav and his team for pulling this together over in WA while I’ve been locked down in Melbourne. Matt and I spoke about how we wanted to capture a sense of freedom, fluidity and fun in this video along with hurtling forward momentum. Matt Pope, the brilliant performer who stars in the video, completely harnesses the direction and puts on a hell of a show. It gives me chills every time I press play.”
Of the signing to Liberation Records, Lahey adds, “I am incredibly honoured to have signed with Liberation and be a part of the Mushroom family. I’ve always had such admiration and respect for Mushroom and the Gudinski’s and am so excited to combine our independent spirits and let my music be heard.”
Liberation Records are similarly enamoured with Lahey, as Damian Slevison (Managing Director) explains, “We’re thrilled to add an artist and person of Alex’s quality to our roster. She’s been one of the country’s most successful and respected indie artists in recent years and we really look forward to working with her on this exciting next period of her career. ‘Spike The Punch’ is a superb way to start our relationship together.”
‘Spike The Punch’ is the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Alex Lahey and the first taste of much more to come.
